Thank you, good Sir, for your willingness to accept this debate. Today, I strongly disagree with the motion for a few reasons; but before I present my arguments, do allow me some time to present some definitions for the house:

Physical Education: "Instruction in the development and care of the body ranging from simple calisthenic exercises to a course of study providing training in hygiene, gymnastics, and the performance and management of athletic games." [https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/physical%20education]

Optional: "Involving an option; not compulsory." [https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/optional]

And now, my argument on general terms:

Firstly, participation in sports promotes health. The government is, or should be, concerned with the health of its citizens. Encouraging physical activity in the young through compulsory PE fights child obesity and contributes to lifelong habits of exercise.

As my second point, I would like to bring to your attention that Physical Education is a very important part in holistic schooling. It is an aspect of school more than just sitting at a desk and doing papers-it is about educating the whole person in an all-rounded sense, rather than merely academic experience. I would also like to mention that some skills learnt in PE might be useful in future wellbeing, for example being able to swim or lift heavy weights safely.

On to my third point, sports help to forge character. Playing team sports like soccer and basketball builds character, encourages students to work together and promotes teamwork, which they would be expected to do in most business and sporting environments. It also teaches students how to win and lose with good grace and builds a strong school spirit through competitions with other schools. It is often playing together on a team that builds a strong friendship that endures for years afterwards. Take for example my cousin who is around 25 years of age. He has already started working in the society but still has a close friend who was on the same school basketball team in primary school.

So, if physical education is that important, why treat it as though it is a totally foreign subject? Why not face the facts that it is and should be treated as an equal to any other English or Mathematics class? Why not stop thinking that this is just another way for bullies to ridicule the smart? Why not stop thinking that physical education contributes to emotional trauma and psychological damage?  Therefore, I believe that this motion should and must fall.

I meant PE in general. I mean that PE from elementary school onwards should be made optional. And I'll take your suggestions into consideration, thanks.

Oh I get it now! So Con wants to change things, but Pro want the Status Quo! Okay, got it.
However I think the topic should of been worded like this:
PE in schools should not be optional
And both sides switch sides. I get confused when Con starts a debate...

I know that PE in high schools is optional.
But if you want a diploma you have to take PE10.
So are you saying that students shouldn't have to take PE10 in order to get a diploma?
Or are you talking about elementary and junior high?
