Description

Resolution: "Objective Morality is real"

Instigator: Theweakeredge - Con "Objective morality is not real"
Contender: User - Pro "Objective morality is real"

The term "Objective" would modify the noun "Morality" therefore one should define Objective as it's definition as an adjective:

Objective - "Not dependent on the mind for existence; actual."
Morality - "Principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior."

Therefore Pro is arguing for the proposition - "Principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong and wrong or good and bad behavior are not dependent on a mind for existence."

Ahhh, yeah... kind of bummed about that

Ah, but remember, even the best arguments can falter. It's less about the tool and more about the mechanic

Care to vote?

Wow I went to this debate in debating period then it turned to voting period right after selidoria's brief rebuttal

I figure determinism would defeat both arguments

-->
@Theweakeredge

the ultimate matchup

MisterChris's argument
vs
MisterChris's refutation guide

who would win?

-->
@seldiora

I'm gonna have a fun time writing my rebuttal tonight, I have a feeling I can finally bust out MrChris's entire refutation guide.

-->
@seldiora

Kinda, but not entirely. We have no choice over our desires and wants that we act on. You can choose whether or not to do an action, but you don't choose wanting to doing or not doing it

-->
@Theweakeredge

you know, I just realized something. If your determinism argument works, then we have no control over our thoughts, and so the genes determine morality ultimately. What a weird inference, but, it seems to work.

-->
@MisterChris

Its probably a combination of the voters, elo points, structured debate, and all

-->
@Theweakeredge

My laziness basically goes in a 3 step process:

1. I say something in the forums
2. I get 200 notifications of people disagreeing with that thing I said
3. My eyes glaze over and I just go back to bed

With debates it's different.. Not sure why but I have so much more motivation to actually compete intellectually in a formal debate setting. Maybe it's the 1 on 1, structured aspect.

-->
@MisterChris

I won't dismiss your point by just saying it was a joke, but... it kinda was. Now I agree, just because I may or may not have defeated a single syllogism, I just thought it was humorous because I had no idea what Seldiora was talking about, and I just so happened to stumble into a forum topic that educated me about it. And definitely fair, I don't think my argumentation is particularly bulletproof, and I definitely get being lazy.

-->
@Theweakeredge

The whole point of the debate is that these issues are subjective and well, debatable... You attacking a set of points in the forums does not mean that they can't be argued and won against you. No argument is bulletproof...my arguments are no exception, but neither were your refutations. Maybe that would be more obvious if I actually put a decent amount of effort in defending myself on the forums... But I typically don't because I'm lazy.

@seldiora

Roy's arguments? And Chris's arguments? (Let's just ignore the fact I've already debunked these in forums) lmao

-->
@seldiora
@Theweakeredge

This should be a good one. It's interesting seeing everyone's different styles and how they change and evolve.

-->
@seldiora

Well, you've seeminlgy improved since I beat you so I'm definitely looking forward to the rematch. I wouldn't say I'm "better" per se, but I'm less rusty. I'm more or less a conversational debater and have most of my debates in person with a speech outline, so that first debate was still out of my comfort zone. Now I've shaken off the rust and have more or less of a style to argue with.

-->
@Theweakeredge

don't worry, I've got a better argument than last time LOL. I'm gonna try to see if Roy + Chris's combined argument works or not.
