Today marks the complete death of an era of American conservatism, and likely the end of one of the most legendary runs of Senators from a seat in American history (Carl Hayden - Barry Goldwater - John McCain): just three Senators over the course of 89 years.

He was a mixed bag, and given the things he said close to death, he might have been the first to tell you that. But today is not a good day in American history. Likely the Republican in American politics with the most guts left until today, the country is worse off without him.

Ive been seeing it all over social media and the one thing Ive noticed is that just about everybody liked something about him. One comment that particularly caught my eye was one from a person starting his tribute comment with 'Im a goddamn Communist and even I respected the guy'. Which was especially ballsy since he said that in a post that came from a US veterans page that is pretty anti-communism.

Even some of my regular friends who are way more fuckin liberal than I am are giving condolences and posting statuses of admiration. I don't even think that Barbara Bush's death garnered this much universal sympathy from people, thats how much outpouring there has been for McCain.

Being well-liked is usually a sign of standing for next to nothing.

Holy cow, I thought he said he could have up to five more years to live. This just came out of nowhere.

He flew across the United States shortly after surgery with a fresh scar above his eye to stand on the Senate floor with rapidly progressing brain cancer just to stand against his own party's President.

He's well-respected in the United States literally in part because he could not be told what to believe.

I'm not a fan of modern politics, and I'm less a fan of modern politicians, but you could write with at least slight tact, seeing that a man lost his life.

There is absolutely nothing about dying that makes him deserve a shred more respect than the day before he died.

I know exactly what he stood for but I guarantee you most left-wingers who are admiring him don't. He's a right-wing joke of a candidate who never should have won and thankfully in his election the right candidate won.

Not that it matters too much, I am fully aware of Obama's deep-seeded corruption but he was definitely the less evil form of corruption out of him and McCain.

I do not know what that is supposed to mean and if it's irrelevant to this then I would rather you brought it up elsewhere.

I am not speaking here out of spite or out of the notion that if I died I wouldn't deserve respect.

There are people who deserve respect when they die but McCain isn't one of them.

There's nothing I liked about the guy. He wasn't a hero, his ego was larger than his IQ, his hawkish policies were terrible for the country, and he had no idea how to fix any real problem. Smooth with the rhetoric, and lacking on effective policies...reminds me of Obama. His legacy as a Senator is a straight up disaster for the country. I'm very happy the Republican party is currently moving away from the interventionista policies McCain spearheaded throughout his career.

He may have been through hell but he didn't come out of it a hero, let's just put it like that.

He had a breaking point just like any other and since then stood for everything detrimental to the ideal society just like all right-wingers.

Torture is horrible and everyone who has been through it is a gangster at heart and I respect his raw toughness but I do not respect how he used it in the slightest in his political career.

RIP

I'm not one to agree with his views, but he was a person who intended well and did what he felt was best to serve the country. His personality generally seemed alright too. Though I'd attribute the higher than normal amount of sympathy for his military service.

(And FYI, please ignore Analyesic and RM turning this into a cancerous thread).

I don't think you can separate his military service experience, though.

I mean, you can't just separate one part of his life from the rest. The combination of it all led to the memorializing.

What's so ridiculous is that McCain had no qualms about flashing his Military Ribbons to peddle his war hawk policies AND his socialist leanings promoting feel-good, ineffective social programs. He was the ideal poster boy for Nationalist Socialists in the USA.

There's little mystery why liberals worship the man, especially older liberals raised in the decades of warhawk policies.

Btw, he lives a pretty good life, but he was 81, he lived a full life.

But who will take his place in the Senate?

Meh, I really don't care what happens to Trump as long as he gets to sign skinny repeal before it happens.

McCain's voting record for Veterans was abhorrent. He's very hawkish, which is why he was on the Armed Services committee. His pressure/obstructionism on the President is the only reason why the left aren't celebrating his death right now. He is tied to the Steele dossier, and that should be interesting if they will pursue that upon his death or try and sweep that under the rug as to not besmirch a dead man. I did not share his beliefs, but I do not wish death on anyone, especially as rough of one as he suffered with cancer. May he rest in peace, and his family heal quickly.
