ok i'd like to start this post off by saying how one of the demographics that duolingo targets are young impressionable children.
I got on duolingo recently to learn that french, and did some stories, then his popped up:

Mari:
J'ai un billet pour Toulouse. (i have a ticket for toulouse)

J'ai... deux billets pour Toulouse. (i have two tickets for toulouse)

Taxi driver:
J'adore Toulouse! (i adore toulouse!)

Mari:
C'est pour ma lune de miel (it's for my honeymoon

Taxi driver:

Où est votre mari (wheres your husband)

Mari:
Ma femme (my wife)

ok im not homophobic but this is an example of our education systems pushing their political ideologies onto children that don't know any better. I haven't seen any other posts about this and I think it's a pretty important issue so...

Never heard of duolingo before. I will go check it out. Other language services have been either more costly than I have been willing to pay or just not that effective so thanks for the recommendation.

No I get that this language service may not be the best fit either and you offer no guarantees, doesn't hurt to check it out though.

I don't like the color scheme. Too much blue, made me start to crave blueberries. Probably in league with the blueberry syndicates in some way.

there's not that much blue, duolingo just has a very bright color scheme if u look at the lessons they're always relatively bright colors for each level. but yeah dude duolingo pretty sus, def in league with the blueberry syndicate, wouldn't recommend looking into it too much who knows what might happen... what language are you learning tho

I don't know about the rest of the site, didn't go beyond the extra-blue sign-up page.

In seriousness I will likely have a look at it in a couple weeks when I have a decent amount of time off. The only significant populations in my area that speak other languages in addition to English are Arabs and Hispanics, though it would be pretty difficult to learn Arabic unless they use latin lettering for it. If they do then I may do that, if not then Spanish makes sense to me.

Their Arabic courses are basically where they give you a tell you how it's pronounced, what it means, and then use it in a sentence. Using latin would be a bit stupid, I mean you won't be able to read anything or write anything. Spanish is pretty good I think, they put a lot of effort into that course.

Did I say "use latin" or did I say "use latin lettering"?

Jesus man what do they teach you kids in school these days?

French Lesbian Whores!.....(Just joking)

Are there similar characters in the Arabic version I wonder.?

And so you don't live in Antarctica....Can one also, rightly assume that you are not 90 years of age.

Just trying to get an angle on your outdated values.

im pretty sure different languages have different stories. and the point of the thread was to talk about duolingo being political. if duolingo said we had to wipe out all jews in a story id have done this too.

I don't care about being literate in Arabic, just speaking it. Why do yoi think that is useless?

I just said I don't care about being literate in Arabic. I do not foresee and likely scenario where that skill would be useful to me. Let's take a closer look at what you are saying...

Out of the following:

1) Able to speak and read
2) Able to speak but not read
3) Not able to speak or read

You would say that scenario 2 is useless?

alright then, im telling you that the learning arabic with roman lettering is way more inefficient and will have a way worse outcome than learning it in the actual arabian script

How so?

I don't need to know the exact scribble pattern that matches the word 'sahra' to know that if I say the word sahra it translates to 'desert'.

Why should I give a fuck about learning the scribbles if I don't plan on reading or writing in Arabic?

I am not talking about the proper name of the specific desert covering much of the northern part of Africa. I am talking about the Arabic word that translates to 'desert' in English.

Now that you know this you may re-read my previous post actually knowing what I am saying.

the desert covering most of northern africa is called the sahara and not the sahara desert because sahara means desert.

Have you learned any languages yet?

Looking back at this thread it is pretty funny how every single post I made went about ten miles over your head without a single exception. Mildly annoying at the time but in hindsight hilarious.

Now HERE is a conspiracy theory that we zoomers can indulge in!

Also, just a tip, but generally avoid saying "Ok I'm not X, but..." because the people who say that tend to be X.

Okay.

So do you know what sahra means now? Because you clearly didn't before.

Your example does not say why it is leftist. This is like saying that I bought a government-made car in Russia, and then people categorize this story as 100% Communist.

So this is what they call “grammar”? Imagine someone asks you “where is your car”, and you answer “my bike”. I don’t get how this is leftist, but this sounds dumb.

Is this not merely recognizing that gay people exist? This is just a story about a women about to honeymoon with her wife, and a taxi driver presumed incorrectly that she was heterosexual. I don't really think this is pushing anything.

Perhaps if the story portrayed gay marriage as being superior to heterosexual marriage I would share your opinion.
