Why would people request to be banned?

I have seen RM, Bsh1, and Wylted do it. I don't know why they request to be banned because it seems to make no sense, like if I did nothing wrong why do I want to be banned? I think the moderators know more about this than me or most other people out there, so I will inquire them about it.

Off the top of my head, some people request to be banned so that they can:
  1. Switch accounts (maybe they don't like their name, maybe they want to start anew, maybe for other reasons)
  2. Focus on life without worrying about DART

But why banning themselves? Leaving the account alone is as good as a solution as anyone can come back.

Speaking of which, I am THIS close from leaving my account because I am losing debates one after another. Guess 2 hours of watching motivational ads really helps.

I know of a few people who were addicted to DART (to the point where it was interfering with their lives) and didn't have the self-restraint to wean themselves off. Thus, they requested a self-ban so they wouldn't keep coming back.

Uh, who and how? Doesn't debating helps with their brain? Unless they are sticking to trolling and turned themselves in, that is.

Not going to name specific individuals, out of respect and for privacy reasons.

Doesn't debating help with their brain?
Yes, in moderation. Everything good for you is good, up to a certain threshold. If you are debating to the point where it is negatively affecting your daily life (say, going on DART instead of studying for an important exam), then it becomes a bad thing.

Unless they are sticking to trolling and turned themselves in, that is.
Not true.

I've considered starting fresh as well, but at this point, I'm at #21 and I've sunk too much cost in it.

Basically #3.

Expanding the second item: We don't have a normal deactivate option, so if someone decides to even take an extended break from the site, it's a way to let anyone curious know that they don't plan on returning in the foreseeable future.

You're too young to understand, assuming you really are 14. Trust me when I say that until you're 18-19, life hasn't truly begun to leap onto you in terms of responsibilities and workload and usually it isn't until around 21-22 that it really hits you that you have to fend for yourself. I'm not at all romanticising childhood, I am not the type who says I wish I could be a kid with no responsibilities again, waa waa. I am instead the type who tries desperately to keep my free spirit alive no matter how diminishing life is for those around me as they age.

When you're 19, you'll realise what it is to have things that are really not pleasant to do but that you have to do just to succeed in life and get through the week/month financially or whatever. When this happens you can find even an online forum to be such a soothing escape, especially one where you're a main character that others interact readily with, both negatively and positively. It isn't easy to quit, it isn't easy to refuse to visit a place where you actually matter, but the key isn't to deny what it is, instead aim to feel like a main character in your real life and ensure that you take the time away from the site/escape to do that. Then, the site becomes the side dish and life becomes the main course.

Also, I have been noticing that the debate page layout was different from last week. Why is that?

Did you like it better before? I prefer the new layout personally.

Speaking from experience, I think self banning is a good way to get off the site. There's no way to delete your account

What is the advantage of a self-ban over simply not logging on?

You won't be able to log on even if you want to.
For example, if DART was a reason behind you 18 hr internet sessions, you could get rid of it.

This is severely flawed as demonstrated in practice by examples such as when RM proclaimed to be fighting an addiction to the site prior to one of his several self-bans. It is demonstrated more clearly in theory here:

Let us say for example that someone is 'addicted' to DART. They have two methods available to them that I can think of.

1) Try not to log in

2) Self-ban

Now, can you think of any problem with method one that cannot also be said of method two?

I can't.

You may not realise how huge the added obstacle of needing to email or make a new account is but it psychologically helps the addict think twice and assess whether they truly want to use the site or not.

Oh, and by the way, the added benefit of no one teasing you saying 'haha he'll be back in 3 days' helps too.

If this really does help then just say the word if you ever start to relapse and I will be happy to help you.

I prefer the old layout, actually. I think it looks less cluttered. I haven't actually debated on the old layout, but I've watched my brother do it, and I am of the opinion that it looks "cleaner".
