..."There, the radiation doses were lower than the ones documented at Chernobyl. “Studies like this in humans are exceedingly rare,” Eric Grant, associate chief of research at the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF), writes in an email. RERF, a joint research effort between Japan and the United States, has investigated the effects of the atomic bomb on Japan and the Fukushima meltdown. Grant says people affected by both events have been concerned about what their exposure could mean for their children.

“The lack of transgenerational effects observed in this study are undoubtedly good news for radiation-exposed populations,” he writes. “Although the results cannot completely rule out inherited mutations, it is clear that if transgenerational mutations did occur, they did not occur at high rates.” https://www.wired.com/story/35-years-later-studies-show-a-silver-lining-from-chernobyl/?utm_source=pocket-newtab

For those who have not followed Chernyoble news, that quanza style hut built next o Chernyouble and then slid on rails over it, is 8 billion dollars investment and made of stainless steel, because, that way they will not have to send workers inside for hopefully a 100 years to repair ---ex removing rust and painting--- any structural detriment due to the radiation hitting the surface

Chernyoble

Sounds like a nasty stomach upset one might develop from over exposure at Chernobyl.

I had read years ago they were trying raise 8 billion for contaiment building plus whatever else. I see now it was only 2.3 billion total costs. that savings would my stomach feel better.

..."But even with those precautions, developers wanted an extra layer of security to ensure that no corrosion could develop. To that end, perhaps the most noteworthy angle of the NSC’s anticorrosion properties is the innovative ventilation system for the arch’s 12-m annulus4 between the inner and outer layers of the structure, where the steel supports and beams come together.

....The entire arch annulus will be maintained at a slight, positive pressure of about 50 Pa—and the containment area inside at a slight negative pressure—to ensure that no radioactive particles migrate up and into the annular space."

Understand, that, the study was very small compared to the spread of ionizing radiation across Europe and further by the winds.

..." studying the DNA of over 350 people who developed thyroid cancer after being exposed to radiation as young children. They created a comprehensive molecular picture of these tumors. Then, to see how they differed from thyroid cancers caused by other factors, the researchers compared these tumors against tissue from 81 people who were born near Chernyoble after 1986 and developed thyroid cancer but were never exposed to radiation. "...

Background ionizing radiation exists every where on Earth and and that is abput 17 millirems per minute. So when every uranimum is dug out of Earth to processed, or nulcear accidents, or other, more radiation is added to the background count overall. And eventually that radiation count average will be raised becuase of human nuclear ativities

Both the Chernobyl and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disasters were “level 7” events on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES) — ie, the highest level denoting a major release of radioactive material with widespread effects and requiring planned and extended countermeasures.
Citing calculations by the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), the report says that total atmospheric release of radioactive material from the Fukushima nuclear disaster (iodine-131, cesium-134, cesium-137, and noble gases) was estimated to be less than 15 percent of that emitted by the Chernobyl accident.
“However, the number of people affected by radiation in Japan has tripled compared to Chernobyl,” said Nathalie Gysi of Green Cross Switzerland.
The radiation released by the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was largely concentrated in Japan and over the Pacific Ocean. The study cites estimates that 80 percent of the released radiation was deposited in the ocean and the other 20 percent was mostly dispersed within a 50 km radius to the northwest of the power plant in the Fukushima Prefecture.
