It is odd that people found this to be an issue.

I find that this helps the site by encouraging people to stay here. It makes the site more attractive to new users.

Anyone with a well functioning brain can see the issue, only Austin and I spoke up about it though.

I see no issue with "More users on the site" and "Making site more attractive".

I see no issue with "More users on the site" and "Making site more attractive".
I do, however, see an issue with "bribing people in order to influence a democratic process."

There's a big difference between favorable policy and bribery. Indeed, it's even been enumerated in US law: bribery is a criminal offense.

Is a misleading claim.
"Influence a democratic process" does not mean "destroy a democratic process".
It also does not mean "forcing someone to vote in a certain way".

In the end, it is the free choice of voters to vote whoever they think will benefit them and the site the most.

That brings us back to the claims "More users on the site" and "Making site more attractive" as being important when considering decisions.

I disagree with your "ends justify the means" arguments.

Yes, influencing a democratic process through bribery can be used to accomplish positive things. However, it can also accomplish the converse. Giving gift cards to everyone who votes a certain way could lead to a small minority (the bribers) imposing their views on the majority (people who otherwise would not have voted unless bribed, and people who disagree with the motion). Obviously, a minority having more power than the majority, is, by definition, undemocratic.

Nevertheless, I respect your opinion, because this is a democratic website :)

bribery is a criminal offense
Is a false claim.
"Voting in US elections" is irrelevant to "Voting on DebateArt".

Further, if we are to encourage "More users on the site", it is very questionable if replicating US elections would help us at all.

First of all, it's not a false claim, unless you wanna take it up with the legal system. I believe you meant "non sequitur."

Second of all, I wasn't suggesting that bribery on DART was a criminal offense - I was merely using an analogue of previous precedent in order to show how bribery in a democratic process is generally a negative thing.

Yes, you do.

Yes, influencing a democratic process through bribery can be used to accomplish positive things.
However, it can also accomplish the converse.
If by "positive things" you mean "will of majority", then it can only accomplish positive things.

Giving gift cards to everyone who votes a certain way could lead to a small minority (the bribers) imposing their views on the majority (people who otherwise would not have voted unless bribed, and people who disagree with the motion).
Is a misleading claim. "Imposing" does not equal to "forcing" in your claim.
"Would not have voted unless bribed" does not negate the claim "It was their choice". The claim "It was the choice of majority" remains true. Hence, the democracy is unharmed.

Obviously, a minority having more power than the majority, is, by definition, undemocratic.
Is a misleading claim. "Minority having more power than the majority" is not a true claim in your argument. "bribing majority" does not negate "choice of majority", irrelevant if bribe is money or promises.

Is a false claim. Unless you admit that your claim "bribery is a criminal offense" is irrelevant to bribery we talk about. In that case, I would like to ask you to place "this is irrelevant" next to your claim next time when you post something irrelevant.

I wasn't suggesting that bribery on DART was a criminal offense
Since you admit that your claim is irrelevant, I will dismiss it.

I was merely using an analogue of previous precedent in order to show how bribery in a democratic process is generally a negative thing.
"Using law to prove what is good" means having it backwards. You are supposed to prove whats good and then make it a law. You are supposed to prove why specific law is good for DebateArt.

I will wait for you to do that.

Since we clearly don't see eye to eye on this, why not put your opinions in the arena? You can challenge me to a debate with a resolution like, "On balance, bribery that benefits DART should be allowed" or something.

The majority literally elects people based on their promises to rob the minority. Meaning they offer voters free shit.

Vote me for free education

Vote me for free healthcare

Vote me for free Britney

Democracy is bribery and I will end it on Dart if I am able with the exception of the presidential election
