If you dont know what magic square is in math, dont read this. You wont understand a single word of this without that basic knowledge necessary for this.
You probably dont know what Shams al-Ma'arif is.
I didnt know either, until I accidentally ran into it. Its the book called "The Sun of Gnosis". Written by a muslim, but also banned by islam long time ago.
It was such a powerful magic system that it got banned and many copies of the book were destroyed over 600 years ago. There are some copies in arabic, but I dont speak that. The original probably doesnt even exist, and I couldnt find english translation anywhere either. However, from what was told about the book, I understood that it uses magic square system.
In math, magic square is usually a square divided on 3x3 squares, where each way (diagonal, horizontal, vertical) gives same result when summed up. Google it if you dont know what magic square is in math. However, 3x3 is not a mandatory rule. It can be 4x4 too.
Whats interesting about this specifically is that writer of the book used magic squares as a way to contact demons. And I very much wanted to figure it out, but its too difficult without the actual book.
The most simple one magic square I can think of is the 3x3 one where each way gives number 666. Yeah, that one was obvious. To achieve this in the most simple way would be to create 3x3 magic square with number 222 in each square, so 222+222+222 = 666. If you want to use different numbers in each square, it would be more difficult to get 666 as output.
But as I understood from description of book, the writer used words in those squares too, not just numbers. Now, thats a tricky one. You can sum up numbers, but how do you sum up words? I figured its probably making it so that each way in magic square has same message when read.
The easiest way is to just write exactly same words in each square, and message would essentially be the same no matter which way is it read. Another way is repeating message in each square, by number. For example, instead of numbers in magic square, write your message in each square, but for example, if one square would have number 3, write your message 3 times instead of writing number 3.
Another way, which I also figured out was possible in 4x4 magic square, is to have 2 different messages, but only one message per square, and those two messages each repeat 8 times. So no matter how is it read, you end up reading each of two messages twice.
I dont really know what to make of this yet. This system is so much different from other systems, and it is very difficult to even begin understanding it. Can words really be used in magic square like numbers? And what are the numbers for summoning demons? Sure, 666 comes to mind, but thats a bit too obvious.
In math, these squares are actually called magic squares, but how to use them for magic remains kind of a mystery.
There is also circle which can be used instead of square. I prefer circles over squares, but I guess using both is perfect.
