The Captains vs Pringles

Round 1
Pro
#1
Round 1:

~ Ramez: More comfortability with conversations: A lot of people feel shy and a little uncomfortable when meeting other people in the real world, but with social media, they became more comfortable, confident, and close with the people they are chatting with.

~ Waleed: Social Media lets people communicate easily, anywhere, anytime.

~Naser: Writing is more summarized: When Twitter and its 140 character limit were introduced, most of us questioned how we could get anything meaningful across in 25 to 30 words.  As we have adapted to Twitter and other social media networks.

~Mohanad: Social media is a valuable way of connecting and communicating with people across the globe.

scams: when talking to other people online you will come across people who will try to scam you and take your money, and social media helps these scammers to trick people.

Fake accounts: Some people on social media would fake accounts and become friends with a lot of people then blackmail them after knowing some of their deep seacrets.

  • Social media can make children lazy.
When children become immersed in social media, they also become lazy. They’d rather sit on the computer instead of go outside and play, and with childhood obesity on the rise, that can have major health effects on your child.

  • Lacks of emotional connection: The quality of a conversation using social media is awful because you cannot sense the emotion or enthusiasm from the other person. It makes you wonder if they actually mean what they say.

Round 2

~More clarity with expressions: Some people express their feelings, emotions, state, thoughts, and daily life events better and clearer with words than in real life, with their voice. So social media really helps those expressing themselves in daily life.

~Social Media helps us spend more time with our close friends and family.

~Social media also helps in communicating with family and friends even if they were in other countries.

~Building professional and personal relationships and allowing us to capture the present moment and make it last.

Con

creates a fake self-image: A lot of people fake their personalities and do things they hate just to attract more followers. For example, some people order food just so they can take a picture. It may not taste good but it looks good so it attracts people.

  • Toxic people: Some people online would be very toxic and mean or even bully people, because it’s very difficult to reach them.

  •  Reduces Family Closeness
“Texting, Facebook, Twitter, and Gmail alienate us from our families more than we actually think it does…. When my family is spending family time together and watching a movie, in reality my brother and I are on our phones rather than actually watching the movie with our parents.”

  • Social media reduce family closeness:
  • The impact of social media is a powerful one. Most often technology can bring forth negative interaction, or zero interaction between siblings, couples, or parent-child. It starves the family of learning and modeling with each other social cues, interpersonal relationship skills, communication skills, and bonding.

~ No pauses or interruptions: In real life, one may pause to think how he/she should phrase the sentence, or some interruption may occur in the middle of the conversation, resulting in its end. In online conversations, there is no such thing, cause it's only you and the person you are texting with. You will not have to worry about grammar and you may take your time thinking about what you will type next.

~Social Media makes us communicate with anyone as if they are in front of you, and that is with the webcam, which provides you with a view of anyone and that through any device such as a laptop or mobile.

~Social media helps in working and business: By this point, it’s likely that your business is using social media in some capacity. If you’re like most business owners and marketers, you may already have  Facebook & Twitter profiles, however… to really make the most of these resources, you need to use them properly.

~Having a platform to showcase technological savvy and creativity.

Con
#6
  • weak personality: talking to others online is different from talking to them in person. So spending too much time communicating online will cause you a problem when you want to communicate with other people.

Unsafe for kids: nowadays, most kids under 13 use social media and talk to random people, and they might even give people their location, which is extremely dangerous.

  • causes Face-to-Face Interactions to Feel Disconnected
“When I see my friends on their phones and I am around them, I feel disconnected even though we are only two feet apart….. Unfortunately, sometimes friends use their phones so much that it is difficult to have an actual conversation with them. Sometimes friends can get so socially attached to something such as a blog or gaming console that they lose touch with friends, creating small gaps and holes in close friendships/relationships.”

Social media is a huge distraction in schools and throughout the school day. Snapchat is a prime example. Schools have to take measures like blocking the applications because students are messing around on their phones rather than paying attention.
