Obviously, racism did exist in the past in USA. Slavery comes to mind. Since slavery directly affected black people back then, it made it more difficult for black people to gain total wealth.
Think of it this way then. Children of slaves inherited less wealth than children of white people did.
This caused them to advance less, and thus their own children advanced less as well then, and this delay in advancing remained till today.
To put it simply, racism harmed the starting point, and any delay in starting point is always a delay in total achievemnment.
Given equal resources, you will always get further if your starting point was better.
If you can run only 1 mile, but someone moves starting point back 2 miles, you cant reach your goal.
So when black people were slaves, they had less opportunity to improve and pass that improvement on all their future generations. Thus, amount of improvement which could have been passed to today's generations has reduced.
