Round 1
Islam is the correct religion. Why? First of all, there has to be a creator. A infinite chain of dependencies cannot be. The earth can exist, but what made the earth? God? But who made god? Nobody. If we were to assume god is dependent on something else, that something else must be dependent on something else! Its a loop. Thats why god is independent and he created all. Creations have designs such as our DNA. It has a certain construction that has been designed by someone. How can it be that we were just planted on this earth?
That's my first argument. As a muslim, I believe god sent down books for us to learn & live our lives by. The Quran is the only sound one. The bible has clear discrepancies that don't make sense. Furthermore, how can god even be a man?
Greetings Mxriyyah. As an atheist in a Christian part of theworld I am less aware of Muslim apologetics and so I look forward to andinteresting debate.
Part One
Your first argument seems to be a cosmological one. A simpleversion could be stated as
- Everything that begins to exist has a cause.
- The universe began to exist.
- Therefore, the universe has a cause.
There are further arguments that proport to show that thecause is ‘God’.
Premise 1. Everythingthat begins to exist has a cause. On the face of it this follows from our personal experience andcommon sense however our perspective is extremely truncated. Our understandinga spacetime is only just over a hundred years old and is confined in scope tothis part of our universe which may be one of many many universes. Quantummechanics also raised many questions regarding causality. In short the claimthat everything that begins has a cause is For now, lets cede that everything that begins to exist hasa cause.
Premise 2. The universe began to exist. This is also problematic. The ‘Universe ‘is a word used to describean area of spacetime and its contents which we can observe. The Universe is nota thing but a set of things, worse it may be part of a larger structure or manysuch structure. We don’t know and with our current knowledge we can’t know. Worse than this is that our current understanding of theuniverse points to a singularity before which spacetime did not exist. Withouttime there can be no cause because there can be no action.
Conclusion 3. Therefore, the universe has a cause.
Given the questions regarding the first two premises theconclusion is not supported.
Part Two.
While I don’t accept the premises of the first argument, forthe sake of this debate, I will cede that the argument is sound, and the firstcause is a God. This would allow the claim that Islam ‘s conception of that godis the correct one.
The main argument you make is that the Qur’an has been givento us by Allah and that it contains less errors than the bible.
1. Qur’an came from Allah. Given that the first part of your proposition has not beenshown to be true (The cosmological argument) then we cannot conclude that the Qur’ancame from Allah.
2. Inerrancy. I don’t know enough about the content of the Qur’an to makea judgment regarding its inerrancy however I will note that there seems to be argumentsthat it does contain discrepancies. But let’s assume there are none. Internalconsistency is not an indication of divine origin.
“My shower contains a herd of tiny invisible pinkunicorns who tell me the best way to act to get to unicorn heaven. You cannotdetect them in any way and they only talk to me.”
This is an internally consistent statement which is not true….Ihope.
