Description
Internet piracy is the unauthorized distribution and copying of digital content.
Con must prove pirating media can be morally justified, while pro must prove it generally cannot be.
Round 1
Hi Sir.Lancelot, thanks for the debate. I'll keep this argument short and give a more in depth response to attempted justifications of piracy.
Burden of Proof
To win this debate I must prove that generally, meaning in almost all cases, piracy cannot be morally justified.
P1 - It is immoral to harm others for personal pleasure
It is fairly self evident that it is immoral to harm others solely to obtain greater personal pleasure.
P2 - Piracy harms others for personal pleasure
Piracy deprives artists and creators of income, depriving someone of income harms them.
"The results found in the vast majority of peer-reviewed academic studies indicate that Internet
piracy reduces legal sales of music, film, television, and books. Of the 33 peer-reviewed studies
on this topic, 29 studies find that piracy significantly harms legal sales, while only four find no
statistically significant impact of piracy on sales."
