Should one undersell their trust of group stealing the ideas and efforts to benefit him/her or other groups?

Many people often assume that society is a mixed-cocktail of human types. We usually contribute to a group to create collective benefit and build solidarity; however, gathering and exploiting the trust of a group is also necessary to build a foundation for oneself and to use it to refine and enhance knowledge and preparation. Should we agree with this or not?
