Gays can have normal lives but I think it's necessary to find a cure for it.
Not very necessary, at 8.2 billion we're about 6 billion less humans till we need to start worrying.
More importantly, this isn't science we can accelerate by narrow focus.
The march to cure cancer should have proven that (they pretty much failed to make progress any faster than they would without all the specific research).
We need to know a whole hell of a lot more about the whole system than we do right now. It's like if you went back to 4th century greco roman world and said "we need to get to the moon, I know it's possible".
They could reorient their whole society towards that goal but they still won't get there in two generations. Maybe three. (I'm not talking about giving them answers, I am saying if they all stopped fighting and doing anything except trying to invent a way to get there).
Why? because there are just too many things they don't know and specific intent doesn't help because they don't know you need to know that other stuff to get to the moon.
