That is an European attitude.

I didn't watch the video,

Eh, if she was blind, would she not be called educated?
If one understands the content, from a text to speech device, and can pass the tests, surely there is 'some knowledge there.

I'm pretty sure adults can learn new languages.
Though if one has never focused on the written word, 'might be somewhat difficult, but eh, words are 'everywhere, be hard 'not to learn I'd 'think, but maybe I'm too used to words.

Did her school let her use a text to speech in class during tests?
Perhaps they assumed that she had some mental issue with regular reading?

Not sure why you want to equate people with sensory disabilities with this girl.

Bias maybe?

The problem in this case was graduating somebody at a college level who was not educated and slapping a pass label for the sole purpose of receiving funds.

You can be highly educated depending on the particular field, subject.

It's all in how you look at it.

Your education should speak for itself.

I'm saying maybe someone 'can be highly educated, even if they cannot read or write.
'If they understand the concepts and have memorized the information,
Assumably she understood them well enough to pass tests and homework's.

"Ortiz was diagnosed with a speech impediment and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in early childhood and has been classified as a student with a disability for “as long as I can remember,” she said."

"While other students made friends and learned basic math and reading skills, Ortiz said she was stuck tracing letter worksheets on her own from first grade well into her middle school years."

"Accommodations in her Individualized Education Plans — which spell out what services students will receive each school year — allowed her to audio-record classes and meetings with school leadership because of her inability to read or write in high school."

"Ortiz was able to graduate because she had met all her credit requirements, but she says she was only able to “survive” high school through the use of speech-to-text applications and a calculator."

Though I 'do think it would have been better if they had taught her to read and write, assuming she was/is able to learn, and I'd bet she was/is.
But I don't know her,
Some kids act out, or get bad teachers, and end up in and staying in the special needs classes.

I wouldn't say education is 'dead in America,
Though this example of it, does not sound 'ideal.

When the illiterate are treated the same as the literate and given the same outcomes, that's how equity destroys education. RIP.

Trump will change that by dismantling the education system in America. Illiteracy will be the new standard.

It’s rare for a professor to disparage the intelligence of a student, but according to attorney Frank DiPrima, who was close friends with professor William T. Kelley for 47 years, the prof made an exception for Donald Trump, at least in private. “He must have told me that 100 times over the course of 30 years,” says DiPrima, who has been practicing law since 1963 and has served as in-house counsel for entities including the Federal Trade Commission and Playboy Enterprises. “I remember the inflection of his voice when he said it: ‘Donald Trump was the dumbest goddamn student I ever had!’” He would say that [Trump] came to Wharton thinking he already knew everything, that he was arrogant and he wasn’t there to learn.” Kelley, who passed away in 2011 at age 94, taught marketing at Wharton for 31 years, retiring in 1982.

Hey sister.

The smartphone is the new standard.

No school required.

Just quick thumbs.

Such is the ongoing evolution of the thumb.

And when AI takes charge, the drooling chip implanted zombies with their enlarged thumbs, will have their endocrine systems switched to impotent mode.

In other words, a Trump hater overheard or fabricated a gossipy bitchy remark, and also got paid to say it happened.

Yawn. That's a tad better than you who didn't get paid nearly as much.

A girl who cannot read and write should probably not be attending university, but there are now many dummies attending university. She may not be literate; there are those who are and they are still dumb. Perhaps her thoughts are better than theirs; perhaps they are not.

Either way, literacy, being at the low standard that it is, does not make people brighter.

It is the job of the parent to ensure their children are not dumb, or made dumb by their teachers and peers.

Higher education is a business that requires a continuous throughput of clients.

And society requires both genii and work horses...And a whole raft of reasonably educated folk in between.

So as long as educational institutions continue to produce the necessary goods, then all is fine.

Much of what makes an education system work well in a free market is honest signaling, but right now this can hardly be said to exist. Schools are incentivized to value graduation rates above objective scoring, state-administered exams can be watered down, and in any case only 8 states still mandate high school exit exams. A degree from one generic school looks about as good as another, and companies would be hard-pressed to avoid a lawsuit if they did discriminate.

One solution would be for most companies to require applicants to first have completed an exam, with different tiers for the secondary, undergrad, graduate, and postgraduate education levels, administered by a number of competing non-governmental entities that share data and are part of a common organizational umbrella. Both the test scores and question difficulty of each would be translated to a score by an independent commission so that fudging the numbers is impossible.  Each test taker's educational background would be collected so that the aggregate test scores of their alma maters could be assessed, and this data made readily available to the public. This way, yes, someone who got a poor score because they attended a crappy school would be punished for it, but it'd reduce the number of future students who suffered the same fate, because (provided that school choice existed) it'd steer children and young adults away from schools with low exam scores and toward those with high scores.

I served as a judge at a recent high school project competition in my county, and I was blown away by how good those kids were. 14-15-year old kids did AI projects that just 5 years ago would earn all of them PhDs, yet nowadays it is just something they clip together in their free time in high school.

I do not see how a Youtube video featuring one girl is supposed to support the thesis that "education is dead in America". Am I missing something?

I do not believe that education is dead. I believe the drive for education has decreased. People continuously educate themselves every day without realizing it. I believe the act of obtaining knowledge through attending school is absurd to most people.
