It is older than 2k in origin. Old testament was not all cancelled or irrelevant at all. Christians that say that are incomplete Christians imho.

Old Testament is sacred. Jews founded our faith.

OT is sort of a mythical history relating to a few Middle Eastern Tribes.

It is what it is.

Though the Earth was a whole lot bigger than a few thousand square miles of the Middle East...Funny how none of them get a mention.

No it is sacred scripture.

NT-only Christians are literally incomplete Christians scripturally.

I grew up in a Catholic society because South America is basically Catholic but none of its traditions had any impact on my life. I always deemed Christianity as a nonsensical useless belief. Granny always tried to instill some of the Christian rituals in me, like praying the typical "our father" or "hail Mary", or crossing myself, but I always thought it was nonsense. My parents didn't bother to teach me about it because they didn't give a shit, so instead they enrolled me in a Catholic school so that somebody else taught me about it. While being in a Catholic school was a good experience because there were well educated children, I always disliked the religious subject. And just to clear it up, I've always been a good, easygoing boy, never got into trouble.

I also had experience with Evangelicalism which is very popular in Brasil and other countries in South America. I was 15 when my aunt got me into it. I didn't dislike the experience because this church engages the youth with good music and nice activities, which is one of the reasons of its success. It was great, I met very good people there and some hot chicks overall, I just couldn't stand the part where pastors start to teach all the Christian nonsense. I mean, when someone tries to persuade you that a guy that you never met loves you and wants to save you, as if you were in danger, it's overly stupid. I really don't understand how people get bought into it. Then I thought what the fvck I'm doing here, you are supposed to be with people craving for knowledge and not with a group that doesn't bother to be brainwashed. I lasted a few weeks, I recall.

I've been agnostic all my life and never felt ashamed of doing things that are considered bad for religious people. For example, I've always been a Jhon and I'm fkn proud of it because it made me a better man. Religious people will always tell you what to do or not to do, as if you were a puppet, but how could you know that something is good if you never experience it. Just to give another example, I used to drink to death when I was young and this experience taught me that alcohol is not the way through.

Finally, I have the experience with the Eastern phylosophies, like buddism and taoism, among other ancient knwoledge. I don't think it counts as religion but I have to say this opened my mind to asnwer many quests I always posed myself about life. This helped me a lot when I fell seriously sick many years ago. I learned about reincarnation, the karmic process, the aliens, the lost human civilizations, the importance of meditation and care of the body, what God really is, even our purpose of life. I feel really grateful for this revelation.

Very interesting question.

I'll admit I have never walked into any of the Protestant, Orthodox, Mormon or Islamic churches or even a Jewish synagogue. But I have looked at all of them from the viewpoint of their doctrine.

I'm a Catholic by choice and I am a Catholic mainly for two reasons: 1) It reconciles faith and reason 2) It is the only religion that I have seen that maintains the transcendence of God and also His proximity to us.

I do think that Judaism is also very much like this but it seems to me that by rejecting Jesus Christ as the Messiah they denied the fulfillment of their religion. My first impression when I studied Judaism was that they were something incomplete. The whole religion pointed to "something to come."

Protestantism I think is a very fascinating movement. Not because I think it is correct on teaching what Christ actually taught, but because I find the whole movement to be the result of the abuse in the Catholic Church at the time of Martin Luther. As a great author once said: "it began an innocent and honest and necessary movement with very good intentions, but ended with bad intentions." -Chesterton. My lengthy personal study of protestantism has shown me that good people did something but did it badly.

Orthodox I would have to say that thay are alot like the Catholics except in some doctrines. Though I think if I recall correctly their ordination are still valid...

Mormonism is a hoot of a religion. I don't really like it because it really does not seem very substantial to me and their founder was also a convicted charlatan. My first impression of mormonism came about by being told by a Mormon friend of mine that his religion was founded by a charlatan.

Islamic doctrine I find to be so far from God that I am blown away they even bother to pray to Him. Also I don't think their idea of Heaven is very accurate. It's very material and not exactly what I think God intended for man to be eternally happy.

Judaism: Incredibly boring. The idea of being part of the Jewish community has its appeal, but what little I've read of the Talmud suggests to me that it's a more effective sleep aid than Nyquil. Haven't been able to find the interesting legends and anecdotes that it supposedly contains. Learning Hebrew and then reading the Tanakh in that language sounds like it could be fun but also super hard and I don't imagine that all Jews are able to do it. Being a boring religion isn't all bad, though, because it lends itself to moderation. Jews are among the few non-white races willing to genuinely acknowledge and criticize their own side's bigotry and racism, and I can respect that.

Catholicism: I have had a little real-world exposure to Catholicism in the form of "Radio Maria", a terrible quality radio program that I sometimes play in my car. And yes, listening to it has reaffirmed all the stereotypes I already had about Catholicism (the other day its presenter unironically said you have to be perfect to get into Heaven and framed this as something doable by human effort). Immersion in a culture with a heavy degree of continuity with that of Medieval Europe could be interesting, but in practice it's retarded. A lot of emphasis on repetitious prayer, which I can attest as someone who mentally repeats mantras often of a religious nature to counter intrusive thoughts doesn't do anything to make you a better person. I can't rule out that it does if you're deeply meditating on the meaning of the words, but I imagine that for your average Catholic it's just a mindless chore.

Eastern Orthodoxy: I once thought they were cool, and not from the usual internet "Orthobro" exposure. Rather, back when I was still in college I wrote a paper on the Old Believers and did something of a deep dive into Russian Orthodox spirituality and what I read impressed me. They've got a neat aesthetic going on but I do think in the long term they're going to go the way of the dinosaurs. Their tendency to jump in bed with authoritarian strongmen isn't doing them any favors.

Mormonism: Everyone but Mormons themselves understands this to be a fake religion invented by a known conman, but they're too brainwashed to admit it. I imagine most of them are decent people though, and it's nice to see a group of white Americans with a relatively high birthrate and wholesome family values (though the Amish do it better).

Hinduism: The most archaic of the world religions by far, and it shows. Hinduism still incorporates use of animal dung into rituals and devotional practices, and tries to preserve a late Bronze Age caste system with a vast untouchable class in the 21st century. On paper it and Buddhism are the most intellectually sophisticated religions, but it really seems like they just endlessly heap ideas on top of ideas without it doing anyone any good. India today is pretty much Sub-Saharan Africa with some impressive old buildings thrown in. Reincarnation as a concept was known to many ancient societies, including in Europe.

Buddhism: A strand of Hinduism that went cosmopolitan and adapted itself well to local conditions across East Asia. It has the strengths of Hinduism without its weaknesses. But it doesn't have that much appeal to me.

Islam: The closest to Christianity of all non-Christian religions, since it developed within a Judeo-Christian milieu and incorporates aspects of both. Paradoxically, the non-Christian religion most likely to do violence against Christians. It's also the opposite of Christianity in that, whereas Jesus was a morally ideal man whose followers have very much struggled to live up to that, Islam was founded by an obvious pedo whose followers have worked to be better than him and reinterpret the religion in a sophisticated light, i.e. Sufism. When you take into account fundamentalist strains, it's just barely better suited for the modern world than Hinduism.

Confucianism: A political philosophy disguised as a religion.

Taoism: I know next to nothing about Taoism. Something something yin and yang.

Shinto: I know next to nothing about Shinto aside from the tourist spots I've seen depicted in anime. Pretty much a dead religion nowadays.

Sikhism: An eclectic mix of Islam and Hinduism. They don't strike me as being half as interesting as this description would imply.

Atheism: There's a whole lot of normal people who in practice don't believe in God and just live their lives without involvement in religion, but Atheists are a bunch of terminally online fat guys who make their entire personality out of it.

If I were to call myself Christian, it'd be Protestant (probably Evangelical) Christian. But at least at this stage in my life I'm too addicted to junk food, traps, incredible laziness, doing and giving nothing to help my neighbor, and over-the-top murder fantasies when I'm even slightly mad to say with any degree of confidence whatsoever that I am saved if Christianity is true.

On an gut level I probably believe in the Christian God more strongly than I don't, but the idea of Hell seems much more real to me than Heaven.

Actually Heaven is more definitely real than Hell.

Why I say that is Hell was merely transferred over as a way us later speakers refer to what the Jews even didnt know how to specify and instead invented actual throwing of people into actual fires as severe punishments at times (or maybe I read a Matthew reference to old testament incorrectly, I am new to this)

Hell is less concretely understood by us. We know it is agonising and akin to being burned continuously, however the reality is I wonder why there is a second coming if everyone sent to Hell ends up in second Hell guaranteed. I have a theory that some are still savable based on things that go on pre second coming in that current pre-Hell 'Hell'. This is not fully ehretucal even as Catholics deny soul slumber and insist saints are prayable to in the pre-Heaven Heaven as well as that purgatory is still going on for many souls.

The Baptists who are doctrinally further from us but live closer in values to us than the Orthos do.

Idk why mant Caths hold Orthos so highly. theyre corrupt and have 0 catechism, they seem to make up the rules as they go such as beard wearing being mandatory for all mem vs only priests vs not eben priests now.

They dont even justify the changes doctrinally

That is a fair point, but I look at the theological doctrine. Not really custom practices. Those can and have changes over centuries. The Doctrines of theology are better to look at to see really what kind of religion they are.

They are holy. See, if you know what holiness is according to scripture, you wouldn't be asking this question.

They are simply people that live holy according to scriptures, according to God of the scriptures where it says be HOLY FOR I AM HOLY. The apostle Peter believed and taught that. That was in his doctrine, an apostle's doctrine, his faith.

The Apostle Peter is regarded as the first Pope by Catholics and as the first proof of Apostolic succession by all Apostolic sects, mainly implying Orthodox ontop.

Peter was given power to speak on behakf of Christ and to forgive on behalf of God too. That is what Apostolic Succession actually means, not your made up meaning.

Thanks for being specific, that really narrows it down. It’s not as if EVERY denomination isn’t saying the exact same thing.

As I see it, apostles were just gullible numpties, prepared to traipse about with a charlatan who claimed to be the son of a MANGOD.

Who might have written what, when and where later on, is all a tad sketchy.

Though some people will claim to know stuff that they cannot possibly know.

A lot of whom, just quote from a English translation hashed together in the 17th century.

Which isn't to underestimate the contribution of religious power houses towards scientific discovery and material evolution.

Though in doing so, they sort of shot themselves in their creationist foot.
