Hey everyone,

I don’t want to overcommit just yet and I know Max will probably slap my hand and yell at me for jumping the gun before we’ve fully lined everything up, but I wanted to get the ball rolling and see if there’s interest in helping move this forward. Max and I have been talking for a while about launching a YouTube channel. We’ve pitched various ideas, but we always circle back to one thing, Mafia. We genuinely think there’s a ton of potential here. It combines gaming, intense discourse, and problem solving, quite a few elements that make for compelling content. A number of streamers and content creators have dabbled in Mafia and really enjoyed it, so want to give it a whirl.

We’re not going into this expecting the channel to blow up, but we do want to give it a solid shot. Here's our rough gameplan:

  1. Bring Back Live Games – We’ll aim to host live Mafia games once per week. We’ll coordinate with everyone to pick a day that works best.
  2. Assemble a Consistent Player Base – We’re looking for a reliable group of people to show up and participate.
  3. Video Editing & Channel Setup – Max will be handling editing. We’ll launch a dedicated YouTube channel to post the games.
  4. Introductory Content – Our first few videos will be very beginner friendly, basic “how to play” content, breakdowns of game mechanics, and commentary that cuts away from gameplay to explain player behavior and decision-making.
  5. Share Across Platforms – We’ll post our content to Reddit and other relevant communities to try and build some interest.
  6. See What Sticks – We’re going to experiment a bit and see if we can tap into an algorithm, drive views, and generally bring some attention back to the game.
  7. Community Growth – The goal is to create a feedback loop, use the content to funnel new players into live games, and guide them toward playing on forums (likely here, now that David has permissions). We’ve also considered setting up a separate site, but this community has always meant a lot to me, so it makes more sense to send traffic here if we can.
I’ve already reached out to a few people, and Whiteflame, Pie, and Luna have all kindly offered to participate when they’re able. With quick fire games, we can knock out a few in one night and hopefully recapture some of the energy and excitement from the old days. We’re not starting immediately, there’s still some prep work to do, but we want to try and get this off the ground at some point soon if it all lines up. Hoping we can deliver. If you are interested in playing, let me know. Outside of blatant toxicity, and just generally ruining the games, I am open to anyone coming unless the broader community is against it.

This is terrible for this website.

It will lead users to get doxxed for opinions and posts they probably wanted kept private irl.

We’re not going into this expecting the channel to blow up
Just subscribe to 1000 small channels who you see post on similar videos, and you will get about 200 subscribers back because many people subscribe back. Just in settings, make your subscriptions public. That way, when you subscribe to someone, he gets informed and likely will visit your channel. Once you get 200 to 300 subscribers, you dont really need any more as there will be plenty of activity on your channel. Only if you want to earn money from YouTube, you need more than 300 subscribers.

Aren't really doing it for money, but yeah in general I think that is a very good way to gain traction. If we wanted to it make revenue. Would just pay and have the channel boosted. Idea is to get traction naturally so we can get some players and have more interest in the game itself. If it turns into something decent wonderful, just hoping there is a tiny base that we can pull from to have some fun live mafia games with. More of a side project than anything.

Also, in YouTube, what you want is that when someone searches "mafia game" in YouTube search,  your video comes up among search results. That helps too with views.

Yup that is the plan. "mafia game", "mafia", "debate game". There is a bunch of key words that we can target and prioritize, I am sure I can take a look at ad words at some point and see some typical searched identifiers. That is so far down the line though. For now, it's just doing some live mafia with the homies, posting some tutorials and other live games, and seeing what happens.

At worst, we have a side project and can do live mafia again
At best, it takes off down the road and we are able to pick up some traction and get people interested.

Use most searched key words, just dont use too many tags, and use same tags, title and description for all videos.

For example, if you choose "mafia game", then mention that key word in title beginning, description and tags. When it comes to tags, more isnt better. In fact, YouTube will ignore you if you use too many tags. About 6 to 8 tags is fine.

Anyone regularly viewing probably hears the voices, names and maybe sees the face to get identities of members to dox them.

🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Major security risk. Anyone getting involved has to be extra careful what they debate here as they can get fully cancelled then.

I know I’m excited for this. Thanks to both you and Max for setting all this up and I’m happy to take part! Hope we can round up even more people to participate and enjoy some of the frenetic energy of these games.

People come here to debate what they get bullied debating or cancelled debating irl.

The irony is Mharman can spew some slurs but cannot debate his libertarianism to save his life as far as I have seen.

I don't think this is a smart move. In fact the mafia part of this site can do with being pushed into its own offsite thing

…so you believe that I and others largely stopped debating because someone might be able to tie our profile on here to our actual names and “cancel” us based on our views? Not sure how they’d go about that, but as someone who has done and posted several live debates on this site, that’s never been a concern of mine and it won’t start being one just because I participate in live mafia games posted on social media.

Mikal,

Per our phone conversation, I would be interested in participating in your project. As you know, my time is quite limited but my calendar is up to date. Please keep me updated on your initiative.

…wasn’t it your argument that fear of my being doxxed and cancelled led me to stop debating? If that was true, why would it matter what I debated?

And FYI, I did in-person debates for about a decade before I even found this site and the topic range was plenty wide. I didn’t get to select my topics there and I have a long track record with my real name attached.

No.

My argument has 2 elements.

1) passionate debaters here will suffer due to doxxing potentuality of this, especially as we have not cleaned things up yet but even then users like me live in fear 'islamophobe' comes to mind.

2) the entire community of mafia here has 0 to do with the site. It is able to be eradicated and the site has to be built for actual 1v1 debating.

Good afternoon,

We need to have a conversation about your business acumen and etiquette. As you know, accusing someone of using AI when they did not is offensive and depending on the circumstance poses a threat to the enterprise. Additionally, use of internet slang is not advisable in formal communication. As you have been told, some people are just such great writers that Chat GPT trained on us. I put some time on your calendar for us to meet in the conference room.

Thanks,

Thett3

Good afternoon, Thett3,

Thank you for the note—always a pleasure to receive feedback delivered with such a warm edge. I'm thrilled to hear that some people are such phenomenal writers that ChatGPT trained on them. Please extend my congratulations to humanity on that achievement—I must've missed the training update memo. As for internet slang and AI accusations, rest assured: I will do my best to keep things strictly Victorian in tone moving forward. No more LOLs or OMGs, and certainly no algorithmic suspicion—just the Queen’s English and polite nods of literary admiration. Looking forward to our meeting in the conference room. I’ll bring the tea and an apology written in cursive.

Warm regards (in the most formal and human way possible),

They can choose to opt into and out of it at will knowing what it means to participate. Doesn’t seem like a problem so long as participants are aware that their debate profile name (or whatever other name they go by) will appear on the video and may connect them to other places where it is used.

2) the entire community of mafia here has 0 to do with the site. It is able to be eradicated and the site has to be built for actual 1v1 debating.
Just straight up disagree with this. Just because the site has “debate” in the name doesn’t mean anything else should be off-limits.

Did you think ChatGPT was trained on animals or something?

Take a look at the reality show traitors which is essentially mafia and they among us game. It might attract new players to the game in general. I think this is a good ideal

I thought I would delete that before you noticed because I thought I may have been slightly less than honest. There is probably some elevated amount of risk just not enough to be concerned about. I know half of these people's real names and most of us aren't overly concerned about being canceled and if anyone is prone to being canceled than they should have enough common sense to use good opsec.

I wouldnt mind also joining a live game but maybe bringing some drama in and some discussion of random hot button issues while playing to cut into shorts. Anyway I think I am witty enough to help you create entertaining streams if you are ever interested in that concept. I think having a few straight laced people who are also vocal brings a nice entertaining balance as well
