It got pretty famous after lynch's death. Absolute failure as a film.
I posted this as a debate before.

Read the plot on Wikipedia. Lowkey seems like it’s just the writer’s poorly disguised fetish

Critical rating is a niche exercise and is overrated.

Watched the trailer and some clips,

Oh hey, it's that woman from Jurassic Park, Ellie Sattle/Laura Dern.

Eesh, that 'would be kind of creepy, seeing ants working on a human ear like that.

Frantic woman with a knife, 'that'd be scary.

Has a nice soundtrack.

Wikipedia says it's a "neo-noir mystery thriller."

"In 2008, it was chosen by the American Film Institute as one of the ten greatest American mystery films."

Ebert didn't like the campy jokes and sexual scenes together, felt it was a bad film for the actress.
Siskel thought it was an interesting whiplash.
Siskel & Ebert - Blue Velvet Review

Eh, doesn't really look like 'my kind of genre, but if one 'like mysteries and thrillers, might have some appeal?

Always liked Lynch.

He challenged the stereotypical propaganda style feelgood, defender of justice, super heroic, all's well in the end style garbage that spewed out of the American film industry....Which always came packaged with the obligatory romance between two perfect American specimens and the vanquishment of the hideous.
