I'm super scared of getting bored with life once I get older. I don't want kids, and I'm not sure if I want to get married or not. How do you older people deal with boredom?

Sex, drugs and gambling is usually how single elders cope with loneliness if they have no family to interact with.

The point is that either you got the fam, you make a fam or you're bored. If you got no passion or anything, you'll turn to gambling, sex, alcohol etc etc

You can outsmart the need for a family by participating in sites like this and making a lonely but passionate hermitic life work with it for you but there's a catch... Get dementia etc and you won't even know until it's so late you do something horrific in your demented episode. Loneliness is not great in a pure form. Have one or two people always IRL.

Could be a neighbour or someone you get very close to, just someone. The human needs one friend/companion minimum to stay sane, it cannot ever outsmart this but can create an imaginary friend in isolation.

My suggestion, since your Christian is to go on a holy crusade to take back the Holy Land and to life a glorious life in the name of God and to preach his word!

Lol, I'm not old so I wouldn't know, I guess there's bars

Boredom is merely a negative assumption that comes to mind when you're not doing something.

So the key is to always be doing something or to be always thinking about doing something. Which is generally how most people tend to function.

Also, it is incorrect to assume that there will be a difference between the way you think now and the way that you will think in the future. Opportunities and experiences may change as you get older but your appreciation and enjoyment will be nonetheless consistent.

Unless you eventually get dementia. Though if you do, you wont give a shit anyway.

That's really dumb... no offense. I think you only live once as who you are now in this moment, it's depressing you'd rather throw that away to be a wage slave but of course that's your choice not mine. But, first recommendation:

Knowledge. Find ways to make money.

Learn, as much as you can in as many different fields that interest you.

Self improvement... work on yourself in as many ways as you can, health, workout, learn, etc.

Video games or any other entertainment that interests you.

Sports or learn something that is an activity under this banner.

Do things you haven't done that need another to guide you through like hunting or survivalists.

Visit other places in the world or in your own country.

Go to events... speech, entertainment/music, conventions, etc.

Go out by yourself and meet new people... i usually go to nightlife hot-spots and just talk to random people i find interesting.

I can keep going... I'm not that old but i'm older. Actually, i'm bored at work right now and look what i'm doing... not being bored giving you advice whether it matters or not. I personally like helping people so it does make my boredom go away. I'm not even Christian and i go to churches to talk to teens bc i'm good at it. It's all about what you want to do. But, there is so much more to life than work... so please, that's super depressing, plus, work doesn't mean you're not bored... figure out things. And, even if you don't like those top things or more now, you may in the future... your mind changes. Your identity changes. I use to hate certain topics that i love now in just like the past 4 years.

How do you older people deal with boredom?
What do you like now?
Don't need to tell me just do it until you get bored.
When you do hope that in that time you have also take a liking to something else like gardening. When the eventual boredom does occur just simply move to the 2nd hobby. From that hope you found a 3rd hobby. When bored move to 3rd hobby. Either you can change between the 3 hobbies at your will or keep adding on the things you like doing. I think this is the best advice anyone can give. A hobby can be having children just with more responsibility than lets playing a single player video game where you can play whenever you want. You can't decide not to feed or play to with the baby if you don't want the baby dead or be positive towards.

If you are not really good at liking other things. Pace yourself with the things you like. This can be going all out with a thing you like for 1 day then only spending a couple of minutes or none for the other days so that the feeling doesn't get burnt out quickly.

Hopefully this helps. Shouldn't really be thinking about this now but if you found something now just shove it somewhere and dig it out when you are bored.

If you enjoy it. Do it. If you don't try to balance it with things you like or change jobs to have more enjoyment.

I should give a list of hobbies you should try:

Look through the list on my profile page and pretty much do all of it.
If that is not enough see similar things on my profile page list and do that.

If that isn't it then think about things you like and do that.

You know... you said it best, keep your options open. There are thousands of things you can do whenever you want to do them. And me personally, i only get obsessed with one or two of them at a time, so i can't even do everything in a lifetime if i wanted to. There is no getting bored if you always live in the present... well, you do get bored, but to me... that boredom is forced on me through societies idiot belief of work. But other than work... i'm never bored. See why your work thing depressed me? I hope you find a job that isn't boring though. 90% of us aren't so lucky, so please don't think work will fill that void... plan ahead just in case.

RM is pretty right on the money. He said pretty much what I came here to say, though I would replace the word "elders" in his first post with the word "people".

Sex, drugs and gambling is usually how single elders cope with loneliness if they have no family to interact with.

For me it's mostly alcohol. Never did any drugs that weren't perscribed to me and the meaningless sex gets repetitive and isn't really worth the time investment so I keep that to a minimum. I guess I did some gambling too. I have always considered the stock market to be gambling when it is poor people like myself doing it, I have never been to a casino. I quit the gambling after my first $10k lost not because losing a third of my life savings made me realize that I should stop being stupid (I'm only 24 after all, plenty of time to make it up again) but instead because that simply became boring.

Alcohol though... that still does the trick for now.

Don't be like me, son.
