Regarding the "meaning of life".

You can never logically get an "ought" from an "is".

Ought = Qualia

Is = Quanta

How unsatisfying

I would suggest that the purpose is ongoing. 

Call it material evolution if you like.

We are already an intrinsic part of that, so searching is unnecessary.

But the ultimate purpose is greater than the process, so life eventually at some point, might also become unnecessary.

Life and consequently intelligent life is perhaps, just a means to one end, whilst at the same time being a part of the means to an ultimate end and a new beginning.

Possibly in the form of some sort of universe ending doomsday device.

The materialists argument of a meaningless universe is self-refuting.

The say the universe is material only, but will then admit that meaning can be found in a conscious mind.

Both could not be true. Meaning, order, and information cannot come from materialism.

The meaning of life is to change actively such that other things alter due to your changing. 

This is the defining feature of the living that separates them from non-sentient objects. When entities lacking life 'change' it is done to them, passively and their changes are part of a chain. When entities possessing life 'change', they both have it done to them passively and change actively, whether it's their position, level of oxygen inside them etc. They make changes occur, that then affect living beings in a way that they may change or give into happening, as well as affecting beings completely devoid of signs of life such that they are altered permanently until other things act upon them due to their changes.

If you created a reality with only non-living entities, you would see over time it becomes a stagnant process after the changes cancel each other out eventually. This stasis never comes while life is present; they offset in their favour.

As I always say, meaning, order, and information can only come from intelligence, and intelligence can only come from life, never materialism.

If the universe is destined to end at some point anyway. Then maybe "The Device" is what enables the re-initiation of the universal sequence.

Genesis rather than doomsday.

Meaning, Order, information and materialism are all acquired and stored data.

How an individual unit might choose to process and output new data sequences might or might not be self refuting.

I suppose, that to a large extent it depends on the accuracy of the original data. 

Though philosophically, the output is quite likely intended to be hypothetical anyway. 

And life is only ever observed in the material.

Fact is, no one actually knows what life is.
