Definitely "Irene of Athens".
Had her own sons eyes gouged out and later had him murdered, all so she could remain empress of the Byzantine empire a little longer and not have him remove her.
Though I am not sure that bad ass cuts it. Totally deprived and inexplicably evil beyond words might be closer to the mark.

That 'is badass, though it was more badass at my first glance of it, when I thought you said she had her own eyes gouged out, so she could remain Empress a while longer, which wouldn't make 'much sense, but my first thought was maybe someone could gouge their own eyes out so they wouldn't be considered a threat, and thus spared by an an enemy, only to gain supporters and regain power 'anyhow.
Course it was only a second later I read Had her own 'sons eyes gouged out, which makes much more sense.
