I wouldn't call 96% of an entire demographic being wiped out as adapting. They were allowed to live and segregated onto reservations. Fast forward 4 generations and I would call those people adapting.

Native Americans were as native as dictated by the moment that they migrated from Northern Asia.

And then other people migrated from elsewhere and things changed.

And people continue to migrate, and things continue to change.

I think that Australia continues to undergo a similar process.

And the U.K has been experiencing the same process ever since boats were invented.

And trading goods has been an integral part of the process too.

Well, it 'has been a few generations since Manifest Destiny,
Still I think I get your point, that you meant adaption more in the short term, of decisions people make to a situation.

True,
But knowledge of this fact ought encourage people to be 'more leery, not less.
To take steps and measures to 'avoid destruction of culture and blood, for as long as possible.
Well, least for people who identify strongly with their people,
Myself I'd call lukewarm,
More concerned with enjoying life, than crusading ideals.
