Chris Burchett (R-UT) As I’ve stated, in this country, we’re a sick nation. We are a sick nation. We need to repent and, honestly, we need a revival. It’s made a lot of people mad that I’ve said that, but it really is — there’s no other answer for it. I think, you know, they come back to me and say, ‘Burchett, you know, look at what your prayers have done for us.’ And the people doing the praying aren’t the ones doing the shooting, ma’am. And it’s it’s just a very unfortunate situation. And there’s no easy answers. I don’t know. Repenting of your sins and having some sort of reform in this country seems to me to be the way we’re going to have to turn this thing around because we have some very sick, evil people doing some very vile things. And revival seems to be the way to go for me. But I realize their hatred towards me and my beliefs. And that’s fine. It’s America, we’re allowed to do it. But I do believe revival is the answer, and I pray for it every day.

Although I am not religious myself, I support prayer and meditation and affirmation of Christian values as an appropriate and very traditionally American response to violence.

So prayer and meditation. Are you saying they are the same or are you endorsing both these two things? What about repenting? Do you also endorse repenting? Your bio says you are Catholic. You are a Catholic who is “not religious”?

Is prayer a substantive response  by a member of the U.S. Congress to repeated mass shootings?

Sadly, shootings are just another facet of American society.

As is the media circus and hype that follows.

As is the political and wider social indifference.

It's something that you've come to expect and learned to live with.

I can't see much changing. Can you?

The main problem with people's prayer is that people arent humble enough and they refuse to admit their sins, and they refuse to warn others about sins.

We should be warning society about LGBT, porn and other abominations.

Matthew 7:21
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven."

It should change. We simply need to elect better people in Congress. To think that we can’t do anything about mass shootings is ridiculous. No other country in the world has this problem. Allowing citizens to own weapons of war is stupid. If we allowed citizens to own belt fed machine guns we would see those being used to kill people all the time but we banned those from private use.

Stop voting for Republicans

I agree with you and I wish you well.

But I'm not sure how representative of the American public you are.

So prayer and meditation. Are you saying they are the same
  • no.  Meditation pays attention to what is.  Prayer pays attention to what will be, particularly what should be.
or are you endorsing both these two things?
  • yes
What about repenting? Do you also endorse repenting?
  • yes

Your bio says you are Catholic. You are a Catholic who is “not religious”?
  • yes.  That describes about 40% of US Catholics
Is prayer a substantive response  by a member of the U.S. Congress to repeated mass shootings?
  • yes.  Contemplaton of trauma in a context of community and non-violence is always a good idea.  The Sermon on the Mount is an excellent  framework in which to contemplate a community's response to violence.
    • Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, "Thou hast faith, and I have works": shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

So the contemplation is the response?  No wonder religious people are becoming extinct

There are statistics that show every society that accepted homosexuality became worse after. Homosexuals go to hell and burn. There is no place for them. No father wants to hear from his son: "Dad, I am gay". Thats a personal failure as a parent.

  • Oh, you mean like Akenatun, King David, Socrates, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Hadrian, Richard the Lionheart...

Homosexuals go to hell and burn.
  • What  manner of self-hating idiot would believe in a God that threatened his worshippers with eternal suffering?  If God made Hell then he is not good.  If God is good, then he would never make hell.

Those were very bad societies, but we dont have statistics on them. Try USA, where we have statistics of what happened after accepting homosexuality.

Actually, suffering happens to those who dont follow the Bible. So the logical thing to do is to follow the Bible.

No. Punishing evil is the definition of good.

  • Based on that response, I will presume you are not a high school graduate
  • FIrst Temple Jersualem was a "bad society?'

  • The DOW doubled in value?

Actually, suffering happens to those who dont follow the Bible. So the logical thing to do is to follow the Bible.
  • That's weird because the Bible I studied told me that suffering happens because Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of Wisdom.  Adam and Eve had no Bible and knew no suffering until they dared to learn.  God explicitly tells Adam and Eve that he punished humanity with suffering for disobeying God's ban on seeking knowledge.
16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
    17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
    18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

If God made Hell then he is not good.  If God is good, then he would never make hell.
No. Punishing evil is the definition of good.
    • Terrifyingly extremist.  Does not match any thinking human's definiton of good.
      • Healing the sick or comforting the dying are objectively good acts but they do not punish evil so you fail to recognize that good.
      • Jesus frequently refuses to punish evil and admonishes people to only forgive evil and leave the punishment to God-
        • Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.
        •  And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear.  Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.
    • I don't believe that you have read the Bible.  You certainly don't seem to comprehend the Bible's basic themes and lessons.

No. I will assume you didnt understand the response.

FIrst Temple Jersualem was a "bad society?'
Every society that accepts homosexuality is bad.

    The DOW doubled in value?
No. It seems that your brain fails to learn. What increased are depression, suicides, rape, murder and other violence. What decreased is birth rates. Thats what happened after accepting homosexuality.

the Bible I studied told me that suffering happens because Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of Wisdom.
Based on that, I doubt that you even read the Bible past Genesis. Bible clearly says that suffering happens as a result of disobedience. God shows mercy to those who follow his commands.

God explicitly tells Adam and Eve that he punished humanity with suffering for disobeying God's ban on seeking knowledge.
God explicitly told the entire humanity he punishes disobedience (not following commands in the Bible). Try reading the entire Bible.

Healing the sick or comforting the dying are objectively good acts but they do not punish evil so you fail to recognize that good
No. Failed reasoning. "Good = punishing evil" does not mean that good doesnt include healing the sick.

Jesus frequently refuses to punish evil and admonishes people to only forgive evil and leave the punishment to God
No. Jesus tries to correct people. To the woman who sinned, he told: "Dont sin any more".
The lesson that you are supposed to learn from that is to try to correct people before punishing them. This does not mean we should be forgiving everyone everything always and let murderers and homosexuals run around freely. Jesus simply teaches us that punishment is not always the best option.

Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.
This means that the person with least sins takes priority in deciding the punishment.

all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.
This means that the sword consumes us. Sword is necessary to maintain proper society, but it is not always the best option in every situation. Jesus teaches us about options that we have, and that those who use sword without considering alternatives will perish.

The alternative to treating homosexuals with sword is to force them to pray and try to correct them. If that doesnt work, then sword.
