Good movie. Watched 2x. Very intriguing. I even own a Catholic Papal Bible with the rights of exorcism.
After all, someone has to get rid of the evil likes of IWantRoseveltAgain, Sidewalker, Double_R, among others… LOL!!!!

Well I'm an Atheist and a Materialist.
So. . .

Though on the other hand, for fairness,
I've never looked or researched into exorcisms before.

Psychological aberrations do occur and may respond to therapy.

And perhaps blokes in long frocks waving beads, and flicking water around might help some people.

Though demons are a metaphor for psychological aberrations.

Rather than psychological aberrations being a metaphor for your actually demon.

A better approach to such issues, is perhaps medical therapy and a moderated approach to counselling.

It's perhaps best if the Church sticks to what it knows best.

Selling fairy tales to children and grown up children.

And leave the medical and psychological therapy to those grounded in the realism of mental health problems.

What you said is far more plausible than blaming so-called demons.

Question: how then would you account for the well documented accounts of Ed and Lorraine Warren?

Do Christian sects which perform exorcisms believe possession is real? Yes. Is possession real? Probably not.

Back when I was a committed believer, I assisted in an exorcism. I saw nothing supernatural. I've seen no good reason to think this isn't the norm or that there is anything beyond the natural world.

We have to believe that possession is real.

Its mentioned in the Bible plenty of times. Plus, anyone who has seen mentally ill people knows how possession looks like.

However, these days its not called possession anymore, but mental illness. Also, it isnt usually treated by exorcism anymore, but by pills and other shit.

I think we can agree on this:
1) Christian sects which perform exorcisms don't think they are fake.
2) exorcisms often involve(d) the mentally ill.
3) exorcisms do not cure mental illness.

I agree with all 3 of those.

Exorcism was actually only successfully done by few people in the Bible. Jesus being one of them.
Even the disciples of Jesus couldnt help the possessed.

So of course a priest of today has little to no power in performing exorcism. Exorcism requires very strong faith that no person on Earth currently has.

I would say that prayer can help the mentally ill, but anyone claiming he can do exorcism is likely a liar.

Well, making people scared is efficient at something. What is that something? I am not a psychologist, so I don't know.

Not sure about that, but I can tell the movie does exaggerate the evil possession as many other movies do.

What I can assure, though, is that most of the witchcraft really works. People not only can harm you physicallly but also mentally, and one way to do that is by witchcraft.

So, I think we have to be more fearful of the living people than the dead ones.

Well, I know very little of them.

Other than they made a living as paranormal investigators.

Which is a way to make a living.

Selling  a popular product, to a ready customer base.

Their success was in their sales technique I suppose.

Any particular accounts I might focus on?

These are the seven more famous cases. Of course the Amityville case is popular cause of the movie,

A really famous case is the first one mentioned at the link. Good movie too. Witchcraft involved. And they aided the defense by putting the devil on trial.
