"The growing chaos in Belgorod region, where local authorities announced a “counterterrorist regime” on Monday evening, was a rare case where Russian villages have come face-to-face with a conflict that the country’s army has unleashed across Ukraine. Both Russia and Ukrainian officials have confirmed fighting at the border.
Any capture of territory has not been independently confirmed by journalists on the ground. The Freedom of Russia Legion is not known to have participated in any major battles during the war.
“We are the same Russians as you,” said a statement put out by the Freedom of Russia Legion on social media. “We are distinguished only by the fact that we no longer wanted to justify the actions of criminals in power and took up arms to defend our and your freedom. But today it’s time for everyone to take responsibility for their future. It’s time to put an end to the Kremlin’s dictatorship.”"

I wonder what will the consequences of this be?

The Ukraine doesn't have any nuclear weapons, does it?

  • After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine became the third largest nuclear power in the world after US and Russia.
  • In 1994,  the US convinced Ukraine to give its nuclear arsenal to Russia in exchange for US guarentees of Ukrainian protection should Russia ever invade again and American support for Ukriane joining EU and NATO.  Russia was an ethusiastic signer, promising to never invade or threaten Ukraine ever again and to respect Ukrainian Sovereignity and territory.
    • Needless to say, Russia broke all those promises in favor of a campaign of unprovoked aggression against their brothers in Ukraine.
  • If Ukraine had kept its nukes, Putin would never have dared invade.

Are we witnessing the typical rise and fall of a Russian regime.

If we can scrape through this one with no nukes, that will be good.

Though I would suggest, that the chances of the next one turning out any less corrupt and megalomaniacal are pretty slim.

It will also be interesting to see how governance and social order evolve in The Ukraine.

NB. Not that I can prove that any of this is real.

Russia wasn't the country that had a civil war in 2014....
