The way to solve this problem is to take away all incentives to game the system, especially the leaderboards and the elo. Then, people are only debating for the debate itself, which is how it should be and the only environment for good debating, imo.
However, nobody here will agree to that. To me, it seems strange that people cling to these empty signals of success. Nobody ever thought Mikal was the best debater on DDO. Nobody imagines that RM is the best debater here. And yet, people keep treating it as a game. And why? Because you are right, these behaviors are boring.

Intentional sabotage? I always assumed it was incompetence, but I wasn't on ddo at all for the last couple of years. What makes you think it was sabotage? Why would they do that to their own site?

Of course. I agree that there are problems.
It's not true that nothing has been fixed, though. Some things have been fixed. Someone put that "I am not a robot" filter in there.
That means things can be fixed. Further, that there's some kind of communication, perhaps between airmax and admin.
It also probably means that the owners haven't entirely abandoned the site.
All this makes me think coma rather than death.

There are lots of problems, but this one really does seem fixed. Also, I never really understood why it mattered all that much (to the point of death). The best debates have no forfeits, so they wouldn't have been affected anyway.

Maybe not. He said he didn't know about there's comment until afterwards (maybe when thett apologized to him). An overall he doesn't seem like someone who reads the thread. He's made comments on other threads that demonstrate a lack of analysis. So I think it's possible.

I think she was clearly upset by the comment and the way the conversation went. I actually had a lot of sympathy for her at the time, although her comments were extreme. I was surprised that you didn't.
Now I'm just surprised at the way you didn't notice her reaction. It wasn't exactly subtle. Even thett talked about it. Did you not read the whole thread?

If you deceive people for years and steal someone's identity then it's not your place to decide whether or not their reaction is petty when they find out.
You said yourself that Rachel has probably been receiving death threats and this Cassandra that bench referred to probably has too. They can't both be Zarroette. She says neither of them are.
If the photo isn't hers then it wouldn't have affected her much to be told she's ugly. She was setting up a real straw man.
A fat man in a basement pretends to be an aggressive, pretty girl online for several years. Why? If she's faking profiles, why not just be a man or herself? There's nothing petty about that psychologically.
Of course there's things you are missing. This is all that you already know, and already it's not petty. So why ask? And if it doesn't matter whether she's old/young/fat/thin/pretty/ugly/male/female what kind of thing could you be missing that could make a difference to you?

If it was me, I would mind a lot. But I've never really figured out online. I've had online friendships that feel real. Maybe they are. Maybe they aren't. And does it matter if people lie about who they are? Does "who they are" even mean anything?
