Usually, I check to see if their assertions follow the scientific method or like a pseudoscience nutter, does it in reverse, makes conclusions and then goes out trying to find anything that will support them, no matter how silly.
Then, check to see if there are any papers on it. Often, the nutter will post a youtube video, not realizing there's a paper on it somewhere.
If the subject matter on the paper is too complicated to understand, then its either ignored or further research is required. Of course, if it is complicated and the assertion comes from clowns like Somebody, we can usually conclude he doesn't understand what he's asserting, much like the creationists here trying to refute evolution.

There's usually 2 such subforums, a general catch all crazy, a cesspool or asylum... and then one connected to the science forum for psuedo, crank and bat shit crazy stuff, like the flat earth, anti vax, or 'I spoke with aliens' type of stuff. Last December, I looked at the Leaderboard and found around 140 were active. I use a benchmark of 14 days, in that someone is considered active if they’ve posted within that time frame. Today, the number is about 70, which is half of what it was only 2 months ago.
Update: After one week, this number is now down to 62 members and declining steadily. Great work, guys! Nice to see you really know what you're doing. Ever hear of the term, "Diminshing Returns"?

When I was an admin/mod, we used to get rid of these guys or at the very least, corral them in a forum together in an Alternative where they couldn't run insane roughshod over the other forums.I love these types of pseudoscientists, because you end up being able to a super scientific sleuth when trying to debunk them.
Instead, we created mentors to invite people, often university students to join and ask questions. This promoted a far more interesting forum where folks actually enjoyed scientific sluething rather than dealing with mr. crazy pants and the trolls, like Somebody and Edlvsjd.
