What you have incorrect is Michael Cohen paid Stormy Daniels with his own money. Apparently he took the money from his retirement funds. Then Trump paid him back over time with a series of payments from the Trump Organization and reported those payments as “legal fees”
The purpose of these payments was ostensibly to aid his 2016 Presidential Campaign
So, Trump illegally took a campaign contribution from Cohen by failing to disclose it to the FEC.
Trump illegally classified the payment as a business expense to the IRS
These are the crimes Trump and Cohen committed. Cohen already did jail time for his crime. Trump was shielded from prosecution by virtue of his status as President. Now he must be accountable to the law.
