Voting for any Republican encourages the bad behavior?
Yes,  the Republican Party is the party of hypocrisy and lying. By voting for anyone in the Party you are endorsing hypocrisy and lying. The candidate is choosing his values when he chooses this party.

What is the argument for the proposition "MAGA Republicans are today’s slave holders"?
  • I am not seeing where you lay out an argument for this.
He never lays out an argument for anything. He just bitches, whines and moans like a little all liberals on the left do.

Look at the very first paragraph in the original post and you will have your answer. Also, see the link included in the OP to the opinion piece from the Washington Post. You two are like a couple of morons who don’t know how to find books at a library.

In summary, the article proposes that just as it would have been wrong to compromise with people who want to maintain a system of slavery it would be wrong to compromise with the morons who make up MAGA Republicans.

Which it doesn't of course.

Firstly, that's not remotely the same thing. Secondly, you paint with too broad a brush. Not all Republicans are in favor of penalizing and deporting dreamers, and most Republicans blame the parents, not the kids (and no, that one random whack job you may find who says otherwise does not speak for the entire party).
The Party, the Republicans in Congress are doing everything they can to punish the Dreamers. The courts have not allowed them to do it. It’s not some random wack job, it’s the party leaders who speak for their caucus.

No, they did not see how Domenici behaved. The affair wasn't known until after he left the Senate.
They know it now but they still remain faithful to the Party, the Party that Domenici belonged to and other Republicans no doubt helped him cover up the scandal.

1. How does voting for Laxalt, who has not had an affair, demonstrate hypocrisy on behalf of the voters?
2. How does voting for Domenici, whose affair was unknown until after he retired, demonstrate hypocrisy on behalf of the voters
Voting for any Republican just encourages the bad behavior. Republican politicians pay no political price for their bad behavior, the lying , cheating, impeachable offenses, so why would they stop behaving this way? People know now that Republicans behave badly, but they keep supporting them, and then they are surprised they continue to behave badly, unethically, criminally. They need to abandon the party, not just Laxalt. Laxalt is simply a living, breathing example of Republicans’ bad behavior, who supports this party of hypocrites. The Republican Party is morally bankrupt and has zero integrity.

And how is this group of people different from people who already agree with you?
Sounds like you admit the people who agree with me are sane, reasonable people and the ones who don’t - don’t pay attention,  live in an alternative reality,  and get their news from quacks.

Strom Thurmond's affair was in 1925. He was a Democrat until 1964
He was a 22 yo racist farmer when he raped that black girl, It wasn’t an “affair” as you say. She was 16 years old so unless South Carolina had some kind of warped laws on the age of consent then she was raped by her employers son, even if it was consensual sex.

He wasn’t a politician at the time and it isn’t clear if he was a registered Democrat yet. His political career began in 1946 after WWII. The point is he became a Republican because if you are an immoral person, as time goes on you will find a place in the Republican Party.

The Democratic Party included the racist and segregated south in the 1920s but when LBJ and the Democratic Party turned away from racism and embraced civil rights for blacks we lost all the southern racist to the Republican Party and they’ve been there ever since.

Domenici is one person.
The list of Republican lawmakers caught with their dick in the cookie jar is extensive and long-lasting. Then these millions of Republicans vote for them in spite of their bad behavior. That makes those voters hypocrites. This includes criminal conduct as well, not just immoral behavior and blatant hypocrisy. And these are the people who claim to be religious and defenders of family values. Herschel Walker is a current example of this hypocrisy of the Republican Party and voters.

How so? Laxalt can't control the circumstances of his own birth. How is it hypocritical or disgraceful for people to vote for Laxalt? If his father was alive and running, then it would be hypocritical and disgraceful to vote for him. But Laxalt is not his father. So how is any of this relevant to him?
immigrants brought to this country as children (the dreamers) couldn’t control that circumstance either but Republicans have no problem blaming them for being here and trying to penalize them and deport them.

Republicans are hypocrites because they claim to be the party of family values knowing full well that their behavior is immoral. The voters continue to support the Party even with the benefit of hindsight. They see how Dominici and others (Trump) have behaved, yet they stick with the Party, the party of hypocrites. Let’s not forget that the longest serving Republican Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert, molested teenaged boys. At some point people have to realize this Party attracts the worst people in America. Racists, white supremacists, hypocrites, cheaters, avarice, liars, etc…

How is Laxalt's father's hypocrisy relevant to Laxalt's campaign? He is not his father. It's quite irrelevant.
It’s Republicans in general who are a disgrace, the Party and the people who are voting for Laxalt. Domenici’s behavior was reprehensible and is typical of the type of behavior you get with the Republican Party. But people keep supporting the Republican Party. They are all hypocrites, the voters, the party, and the politicians, because they claim to be the Party of family values. We all know that’s a lie. This is just one example. Strom Thurman was another that easily comes to mind who had a  secret child with a mistress.

I don't know much about Adam Laxalt, but this is an incredibly lazy and irrelevant criticism. No one can control the circumstances of their own birth.
This isn’t a criticism of Laxalt genius. It’s a criticism of the hypocrisy of his father, the Republican Party, piety, and Republican voters. Lying, cheating, and hypocrisy are cardinal virtues of the Republican Party.

If DeSantis had the power to open drilling in Alaska, open the keystone pipeline, not insult the Saudis when asking for help, not promise to end oil, and refuse to offer permit fee exceptions along with relaxing NEPA restrictions on permits, then yeah, I'd stand arm in arm with you blaming DeSantis for high gas prices....in Florida...
What a dummy!

Alaska? The oil companies have more places to drill than they know what to do with.

Keystone XL pipeline? That oil would only be used to export to other countries.

Adam Laxalt was born in Reno, Nevada, the son of Pete Domenici, a Republican U.S. Senator from New Mexico, and Michelle Laxalt. He is the grandson of former Republican Nevada Governor and U.S. Senator Paul Laxalt. Laxalt's mother raised him as a single parent. Laxalt's parents did not publicly acknowledge his paternity until 2013.[2][3] At that time, Domenici acknowledged that Laxalt was his son and was born as a result of an extramarital affair.[3]

Domenici was married and 22 years older than Michelle Laxalt when he got the 24 yo pregnant. The party of family values!!

The circumstances of Adam Laxalt’s birth are unique. His mother’s father, Paul Laxalt, founded a prominent law firm in Nevada before becoming our state’s governor. In 1974, he became a United States senator and moved to Washington, D.C. with his wife and daughter, Michelle. When she was 24, Michelle was impregnated in 1977 by a colleague of her father’s, Senator Pete Domenici. At that time, Senator Domenici was 46 years old, a staunch Catholic and the married father of eight children.

You asked what was more detrimental, Russian meddling or misinformation like we get from Alex Jones, FOX News, OAN, The Gateway Pundit, etc…

It is an honest quest and the answer is impossible to determine except in hindsight when our country implodes. But Trump is definitely the biggest reason we are a backsliding democracy which did not have a peaceful transfer of power in 2021 for the first time in our nation’s history.

Those are all lies. The lockdowns happened during Trump’s last year after he botched the initial response to Covid. The lockdowns continued in other countries like China and Taiwan. Oil shortages are from oil companies cutting back on spending and drilling to boost profits and refineries failure to keep up with demand.

The Saudis deserve to be insulted but they aren’t going to pump more oil just because you're nice to them or let them murder people.

David DePape, the man charged with attacking House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, published posts filled with screeds against Jewish people, Black people, Democrats, the media and transgender people. In the days before the assault in Pelosi’s home, DePape wrote that an invisible fairy had attacked an acquaintance and sometimes appeared to him in the form of a bird, a review of his since-deleted blog shows.

Republicans are advertising on TV that Biden caused inflation and we shouldn’t send money to Ukraine as a result. But inflation is a problem around the world and is caused by Covid related supply shortages overseas, boycotts on Russian oil, and full employment in the US.

These guys should NOT be trusted with the economy.

In a personal blog that DePape maintained, posts include such topics as “Manipulation of History,” “Holohoax” and “It’s OK to be white.” He mentioned 4chan, a favorite message board of the far right. He posted videos about conspiracies involving COVID-19 vaccines and the war in Ukraine being a ploy for Jewish people to buy land.

From the LA Times 10/28:

DePape’s screeds included posts about QAnon, an unfounded theory that former President Trump is at war with a cabal of Satan-worshipping elites who run a child sex ring and control the world. In an Aug. 23 entry titled “Q,” DePape wrote: “Either Q is Trump himself or Q is the deepstate moles within Trumps inner circle.”

DePape followed a number of conservative creators online, including Tim Pool, Glenn Beck, DailyWire+ and the Epoch Times. He also followed an account on YouTube called Black Pilled and reposted several of its videos on his blog. “Blackpilling” is internet slang for coming to believe supposedly unacceptable facts about society, and the reposted videos include accusations such as the FBI covering up child rape.

DePape posted videos to Facebook by MyPillow Chief Executive Mike Lindell saying that the 2020 presidential election was stolen, according to reports.

Several people on this site including JoJo Parrot and TWS are the same kind of nutty, Nazi, white grievance kind of wack jobs.

Can’t say for sure if it’s intentional or not, but you are shifting the goalposts.
This has always been the issue with Russia in 2016. They started out with simple meddling and trying to undermine the credibility of the west. Then they saw what a gold mine they had with Trump who would help them undermine democracy and NATO and decided to try to specifically help Trump get elected. This was unprecedented. On top of that, with Trump they had a candidate who welcomed the help and even coordinated with the Russians .

So, you're claiming that propaganda is exactly the same as declaring an official war?
No, not at all. That is very poor reading comprehension.

The point I made that apparently went over your head is: Ordinary American citizens criticizing Russia about Ukraine on social media is very different than the U.S. government trying to influence a Russian election by using social media, sending money to opposition candidates, hacking emails of opposition candidates etc… which is exactly what Russia did in the 2016 election

Alright then,
"1984 election (by Soviet Union)[edit]
When Ronald Reagan was running for reelection as president, the Soviet Union opposed his candidacy and took active measures against it.[151] Soviet intelligence reportedly attempted to infiltrate both the Republican National Committee and Democratic National Committee.[151]"
 - Foreign electoral intervention - Wikipedia I'm not bothering to find out if the Russians met with a campaign manager in 1984 though.
None of your links show there was an attempt by Russia to influence the 84 election. You’re just blowing smoke.

your articles say the influence originated in the US, not by the US, as in the US government. People are free to say and do what they want, but when a government is behind the effort then it’s an attack.

And FYI, Russia deserves to be criticized for their invasion of Ukraine. People and governments around the world should criticize Russia for their aggression.

@Lemming
Specific example though?
"Adlai Stevenson II had been the Democratic Party presidential nominee in 1952 and 1956, and the Soviets offered him propaganda support if he would run again for president in 1960, but Stevenson declined to run again.[142] Instead, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev backed John F. Kennedy in that very close election, against Richard Nixon with whom Krushchev had clashed in the 1959 Kitchen Debate."
Ok, assuming what you said is true, you had to back 70 years.  And Stevenson didn’t run. Then you claim Russia (or only Khrushchev) backed Kennedy.

What did the Russians do to help Kennedy. Did they have a meeting with his campaign manager at the compound in Hyannisport?

You are not making a good case here.

Even after I pointed it out, you still speak as if foreign interference began and concluded in 2016. You also speak as if foreign influence is limited to Russia. The news for you is that it isn’t limited to 2016 nor limited to Russia. I expect foreign powers to wish chaos on the US. It is that much more alarming when our own institutions sow chaos, whether intentional or not. Self destruction is still destruction. That said, none of these entities actually cast any of the votes.
Name anther election in which Russia tried to help a specific candidate.

The meddling of Russia should be the very least of your concerns.
So you think American corporations shouldn’t be allowed to advertise on TV because that somehow gives them control on what is reported.

So how would broadcasters make money? Are you advocating for socialism? Because your statements sound anti-free market/capitalism.

I think you know I have told you before that: yes, Russia spent around 100,000 dollars to influence the 2016 election
That’s a lie. They spent millions on social media ads alone. They also funneled 35 million through the NRA.

“A notorious Russian "troll factory" had a $1.25 million budget in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election to interfere in the US political system, according to charges filed by the Department of Justice”

“In January 2018, McClatchyDC reported that Robert Mueller's Special Counsel investigation is pursuing allegations that Torshin has links to Russian organized crime, and laundered money from the Russian government to the NRA to benefit Trump's campaign.[6] Torshin is also the subject of a probe by the Federal Bureau of Investigation into whether the Russian government attempted to illegally funnel money to the NRA in order to help Trump win the presidency.[6][21][22] On May 16, 2018, the Senate Intelligence Committee released a report[23] stating it had obtained "a number of documents that suggest the Kremlin used the National Rifle Association as a means of accessing and assisting Mr. Trump and his campaign" through Torshin and Butina, and that "The Kremlin may also have used the NRA to secretly fund Mr. Trump's campaign."

@K_Michael
That’s the simple explanation.

A republic is defined as “a state in which the supreme power rests in the body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by representatives chosen directly or indirectly by them.” Sound familiar? It should.

You see, many of today’s democracies are also republics, and are even referred to as democratic republics. So, the US and France are considered both democracies and republics—both terms point to the fact that the power of governance rests in the people, and the exercise of that power is done through some sort of electoral representation.

The key concept to the word republic is that the leader of this government (or state) is not a hereditary monarch but a president, whether they are elected or installed.

This core idea helps explain in part why autocratic governments like North Korea is officially called the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Its citizens vote (or “vote”) on a single candidate. A historical example of a republic is also instructive. The Republic of Venice, a mercantile city-state of the Middle Ages, was led by a doge who was elected by wealthy merchants.

No, to avoid sham trials and coerced confessions. This is based on the idea that if someone is coerced to confess, their confession isn't reliable. At its core, it's an amendment designed to protect the innocent who otherwise might be ensnared by ambiguous circumstances (see Ohio v. Reiner).
Aren’t Republicans the same people who approved water boarding?
