Can you elaborate on why my assertion that "one can live without a brain (ie, as understood as a human brain) is false?

False. One can exist without a brain.
How about clouds? the skies? They do exist.. Being alive and staying alive necessarily involves some form of intelligence and thinking abilities.
So, at best, you may say: "without a brain, one may not think like an animal, human or insect" but that's about it.
And even this, is not scientifically true: plants have been proven to be aware and to possess intelligence, memory and learning abilities which allow them, for example, to communicate with fellow plants through high frequencies..
