why aren't non-gun murders wildly out of control in the usa?
-->
@Greyparrot
@n8nrgim
Yes, interesting thoughts, guys. It would be ironic if the gun control act of 1968 caused that much blowback. I don’t just mean more people acquired guns, but people started collecting them. Using the 80/20 rule, 80% of the guns are owned by 20% of the people.

Perhaps Charles Bronson and his Deathwish movies are part of it, eh?

@Greyparrot
Well put. I can actually rebut most of the usual pro gun arguments, but what you just posited isn’t one of the usual ones. Whereas the pro gun argument posits gun freedom being greater than any negative consequences reaped from gun freedom, you (and Ben) are saying that freedom in general is greater than complete safety in general. As Thomas Sowell says, “There are no solutions, just trade offs.”

Also, the USA is an incredibly large and diverse nation compared to ones with better crime stats. And being one of the world’s major firearms producers, it isn’t too shocking that there are a lot of guns. One thing no one seems to have an answer for though:  gun ownership didn’t really get markedly huge until the 1970’s. What caused that large increase?

 They don't bash Niki Hailey or DeSantis nearly as much or really at all.
I’ve seen quite a bit of coverage of DeSantis— all of it negative. The media fear of a DeSantis presidency is definitively there, especially for a person who has not even declared yet.

The conflation between when DeSantis said Florida is where woke goes to die
-->
@oromagi
  • You must admit that DeSantis and his followers are at least pretending to be angry about something.
Underdog was saying “people shouldn’t get angry at people for believing…” (bold added)

To clarify, I should have said that opposition to a certain ideology doesn’t necessarily mean anger directed toward people believing a certain way. Perhaps you should be asking Underdog to show evidence where DeSantis is directing anger (ie hostility) towards individual people over this?

But calling for the death of an ideology (i.e. where woke goes to die) does necessarily equal anger
You are not understanding the use of metaphoric and hyperbolic speech for effect here. Lighten up a bit.

Please give a very specific example- name a Florida school that that INDOCTRINATED (indoctrinated means beliefs (not facts) without a critical framework) children (K-12) in a belief system without their parents knowledge or permission.
You already referred to “woke” as an ideology above. Teaching children ideology uncritically is indoctrination. Now, you want examples of such a thing where such a thing is actively being prevented?

Opposition does not necessarily equal anger. From the “anti-woke”, I only see anger manifest when people’s children are indoctrinated in ideology without their knowledge or permission.

When DeSantis makes that claim, “woke” means racial indoctrination in primary education, the racial victimhood narrative, the racial equity agenda, and the anti-white narrative… and I applaud him for it.

Many POC tend to see white supremacy as existing just about everywhere, not just in right wing ideology. Under the loosest definition I have seen, white people intermarrying are, in effect, supporting the persistence of white supremacy.

America should not thrive on diversity.
The problem with the word “diversity” is that it is loaded language. The definition being:

“the practice or quality of including or involving people from a range of different social and ethnic backgrounds and of different genders, sexual orientations, etc.”

Sounds nice enough. But what exactly is “including or involving”? Inviting them to cocktail parties? It really means to institute preferences in job and university selection based upon certain underrepresented immutable characteristics rather than merit. It means doing away with the concept of meritocracy, calling it a myth, not just in the past, but impossible to attain in the future as well.

Rather than doing away with social hierarchies as it purports to do, it merely seeks to create a different one— one where heterosexual, cisgender white males (especially older ones, aka “male, pale, and stale”) are at the bottom, and a black Muslim lesbian in a wheelchair might be at the top.

Now, it’s bad enough when selection based on immutable group identity is used in university faculties and government hiring for various administrative work, but it is much more dangerous in the near term when it creeps into health and safety capacities.

When combined with the concept of equity as it often is, it pushes not for equality, not for equal opportunity, but for equality of outcome based on immutable characteristics.

The result of all this? Our current vice president.

I used to think that the government/corporate relationship was pretty much a one way street— corporations lobby government for certain policies, and government would largely grant these wishes. Not ideal but the reality. Perhaps that used to be the case, too. But during and since the pandemic, it appears that the relationship is much more 2 way— corporations such as Twitter are granting the wishes of government bureaucracies. What’s perhaps worse, since the election of “the occupant,” some influential corporations are working not just on behalf of their own business interests, but the interests of the DNC.

Modern Monetary Theory
I realize this forum is largely empty, but here is hoping that there are still some armchair economists with something to say about Modern Monetary Theory:

To summarize, MMT posits that nations with full control over their currency, such as the U.S., can print money as needed for the general welfare. Inflation would be kept in check by a measure of unemployment and by keeping supply and demand properly balanced. If inflation were to occur, it could be taxed back, government spending reduced, and the money supply thereby reduced.

It is supported by such prominent politicians such as AOC and Bernie Sanders. Personally, I don’t buy it. I believe it would lead to hyperinflation, unemployment, and the loss of the US dollar as the world reserve currency. We would be, to put it delicately, f****d.

Any thoughts for or against?

From my understanding, hate crimes do command a harsher penalty because the motive involves hatred of an entire group identity rather than just an individual one has an issue with. Apparently, this man was attacked for his skin color rather than any personal reason.

Crime is crime regardless of who is doing it.
Hate crime laws are based on the principle that the type of motive and identities involved make a difference, which goes against your principle of “crime is crime.” Are you against hate crime laws then?

Why not open borders?
“The border!” was one of the chants heard during the president’s State of the Union speech. The condition of the US border and border enforcement are hot button issues currently. One can find a whole host of articles and studies extolling the benefits and virtues of allowing immigration, legal or not, and defending the numerous “sanctuary cities” in the US (Canada and Europe as well).

However, Democratic politicians, such as Cory Booker, have claimed that the Democratic Party does not advocate for open borders and resent the GOP implication that the US borders are virtually open and intentionally so. I have to point out here that the term “open border” itself is pretty vague. If one looks it up, the types of national borders are numerous and varied. Admittedly, it is not simply a binary choice of open/closed borders. But… to those who oppose highly regulated immigration, are for policies such as amnesty and sanctuary cities, but, like Cory Booker, insist they are not advocating for open borders, my question is:

Why not have open borders?

Is sending kids to drag shows pedophillia?
-->
@Lemming
Monty Python,
Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)
White Chicks (2004)
You bring up some interesting context! Yes, there is a definite difference between “men in drag” and present day “drag queens.” The former involves men dressing as “plain Jane” women for comedic effect. The latter involves over the top efforts toward glamour and feminine sexuality, entailing flamboyant skin tight costumes, exaggerated versions of the female form, long eyelashes, heavy face and eye makeup, large hair, and sexual movements, voice affects and innuendo. To sum up, I would take young children to see “Mrs. Doubtfire” but not “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.”

No one would dare promote a “pornstar story hour” to children, but because men seeking to be women are labeled an oppressed and victimized group, many misguided people feel as though they have to vouch for drag queen shows and story hours as not just harmless but beneficial to children.

Alas, the Democratic Party has evolved from valuing its citizens, to valuing foreigners as much as its citizens, to presently valuing foreigners more than its own citizens. Trump’s “America First” doctrine, which IMO should have gone without saying or much fanfare, was instead highly controversial.
