Description

New Zealand was ranked the most liberal country in the world followed by Switzerland. New Zealand has a good history regarding fundamental rights and freedom. People exercise their political opinions through the electoral process just while the taxation level among the working class n among the lowest in the world. In Switzerland, direct democracy has been decentralized, civil liberties are protected by law, and the country has a good history regarding human rights.https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/the-10-most-liberal-countries-of-the-world.html

Thank you billbatard, for instigating this debate.

0.1 Definitions
LIBERAL-
1.
open to new behaviIor or opinions and willing to discard traditional values.
FREEDOM-
the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.
0.2 Clarifications
All I have to do is prove that New Zealand is not the most liberal country, I do not have to prove any specific country is. Therefore, burden of proof is on PRO.

I. New Zealand
If you look at many freedom indexes of both economic and personal liberty you find new zealand at or near the top, pretty much why i picked new zeland everyone says its the most liberal place on earth measured scientifically
I take this quote as a concession: "New ze[a]land at or near the top". Notice how PRO says near the top. I have checked the source you have stated. This source is quite outdated (over a year ago), so it's reliability is questionable.  A article by http://worldpopulationreview.com/countries/most-liberal-countries/ states that Iceland is categorized as the most liberal country in the world. The discrepancies are obvious.

II. Switzerland
Con argues that Switzerland is less liberal than New Zealand.
New Zealand was ranked the most liberal country in the world followed by Switzerland.
New Zealand recently had it's deadliest shooting: Christchurch. Over 50 people died in this terrible attack. Switzerland, on the other hand, has never been in a war for over 150 years.

III. Sweden
Sweden is the most free/liberal country in the world according to freedomhouse.org, scoring a perfect score, and 2 points higher than New Zealand.

IV. Opening Statement Conclusions
"Although New Zealand is extremely liberal and free, even more than the United States, it is not the most liberal country in the world."

Liberalism refers to a political doctrine that emphasizes on protecting the freedom and rights of the citizenry. Liberals view the government as an arm that protects citizens from external and internal threats but at the same time recognize that the government by itself can be a threat to the freedom of the citizens. In his pamphlet Common Sense (1776), American philosopher Thomas Paine compared the government to a “necessary evil.” Law enforcers, Judiciary, and the constitution are meant to protect individuals' right, property, and liberty but in some instances, the same institutions might be used to against the individual.
In 2006 the State of World Liberty Index released a ranking of the most liberal countries in the world. The ranking was based on economic freedom, individual freedom, and the size of the government and taxation it levied on its people. Estonia, Ireland, and Canada were ranked 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively. The UK and the US were ranked 7th and 8th respectively while New Zealand was ranked 10th. The 2017 ranking used the same data sources but with adjustments to the data.

let us remember these are complex formula,
Economic freedoms are part of the formula , but only part safety health , quality of life, education , play a role as unhealthy homeless people tend not to be free, taxation is an issue as most people dont like the government taking all their money , although in some societies high taxes are considered a fair trade for generous public services available to all but most people prefer to spend their own money their own way ,
I'd like to adress  the mass shooting , if they happened every day i think they'd be an issue, as they do here, but they are extremely rare occurances and usually new zealnd is super safe.. ironically the fact that the usa is flooded with guns and has lots of shootings to Americans is indicative of our freedoms
gun laws were until this year relatively liberal to with a license a b c d or e on could own different types of guns each class requiring more vof a security check or training but New ZEaLAND has promised to tighten up its laws to prevent future shootings , We have to remember to the rest of the world the ability or ease of buying a gun isnt prioritized over public safety and valued as such a cherished freedom https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_law_in_New_Zealand#Other_categoriesThe 2006 State of World Liberty Index was created by combining the rankings of four other indexes of world liberty into one: the "2005 Economic Freedom of the World" Index (Fraser Institute), the "2006 Index of Economic Freedom" (The Heritage Foundation), the "2005 Freedom in the World" index (Freedom House), and the "2005 Press Freedom Index" (Reporters Without Borders).https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_of_World_Liberty_Index i'm sure an extremist might contend that stricter gun laws mean a terrible tyranny but let us remember that extemist opinion s are not what should be of value as they are the products of unsound unhealthy minds

Thank you billbatard for responding to my arguments.
Note to Voters: Plagiarism.

PRO has repeatedly plagiarized across the entire debate. He has not stated sources for several of these, and just plain out copied and pasted the article (and then proceeded to change a couple of words).

Liberals view the government as an arm that protects citizens from external and internal threats but at the same time recognize that the government by itself can be a threat to the freedom of the citizens. This entire paragraph was stolen, took from a respectable writer at: https://www.britannica.com/topic/liberalism. Voters, please take this seriously.

In 2006 the State of World Liberty Index released a ranking of the most liberal countries in the world. Estonia, Ireland, and Canada were ranked 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively. The UK and the US were ranked 7th and 8th respectively while New Zealand was ranked 10th. In 2006? That was over a decade ago. And still, New Zealand was ranked 10th, I take that as a partial concession. Also, this entire paragraph was copied and pasted from your source: https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/the-10-most-liberal-countries-of-the-world.html.

Copied and pasted from your description. Rebutted in R1.

This statement is completely and utterly wrong. Particularly "if they happened every day i think they'd be an issue, as they do here". Let me ask you voters, if 'here' is referring to the United States of America, has there been a shooting on 9/21/19?

gun laws were until this year relatively liberal to with a license a b c d or e on could own different types of guns each class requiring more vof a security check or training but New ZEaLAND has promised to tighten up its laws to prevent future shootings , We have to remember to the rest of the world the ability or ease of buying a gun isnt prioritized over public safety and valued as such a cherished freedom
'Gun laws were until this year...' I take this statement as a partial concession. I am not sure what 'vof' means in this case. We are not arguing about if New Zealand is the best country, we are arguing if it is the most liberal. So, it doesn't matter if 'New ZeALAND' has promised to tighten up it's gun laws. In fact, that statements rebuts your entire argument by itself. The act of tightening up your gun laws is against the very idea of liberalists and freedom. New Zealand might've once been the most liberal country, but it is certainly not now.

The 2006 State of World Liberty Index was created by combining the rankings of four other indexes of world liberty into one: the "2005 Economic Freedom of the World" Index (Fraser Institute), the "2006 Index of Economic Freedom" (The Heritage Foundation), the "2005 Freedom in the World" index (Freedom House), and the "2005 Press Freedom Index" (Reporters Without Borders).https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_of_World_Liberty_Index i'm sure an extremist might contend that stricter gun laws mean a terrible tyranny but let us remember that extemist opinion s are not what should be of value as they are the products of unsound unhealthy minds
PRO, the year is not 2006, it Is 2019.

Fist of all i give sources so there is no plagerism are we not supposed to use sources to back up what we say? SO I DID THAT I have also provided a site showing how liberal new zeland is how that decision was come to and that new zealdn was number one https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/the-10-most-liberal-countries-of-the-world.html which inst just one list but a combo of like 4 huge credible index like cato and heritage foundationThe State of World Liberty Index was a combination of indices compiled originally in 2006 by Nick Wilson.  Since then, I've periodically updated the index.  My methodology is similar to the original with the following exceptions: I use only the civil liberties portion of Freedom House, economic liberty (Fraser/Heritage) is weighted evenly with social liberty, and the Reporters without Borders Press Freedom Scores are of equal weight to each of the Freedom House Civil Liberties sub-components.  All changes are done with the purpose of creating the most accurate relative ranking of countries by the degree of liberty (economic and social) enjoyed by the average individual within the state or territory.  Note, the ranking is not reflective of, nor does it include, political or electoral rights.  Where data is available, territories or colonies (e.g. Hong Kong) are included.
Also included is a ranking of the Conservative-Progressive spectrum, where conservative would be very high economic liberty but low social liberty, and progressive would be very high social liberty but low economic liberty.  This added dimension allows for grouping states by both freedoms and ideology, such as Moderate Free (New Zealand) and Moderate Tyranny (North Korea), Progressive Free (Ireland) and Progressive Tyranny (Venezuela), and Conservative Free (Hong Kong) and Conservative Tyranny (Syria).
Also please note, rankings used to create the below are typically delayed by one to two years.  So, they do not reflect any recent events that may have occurred within the past 6-12 months.http://patrickrhamey.com/saturday-research/2019/3/18/2019-state-of-world-liberty-index i have proven all i need to prove the rest is just smoke and mirrors by the enemy to confuse people with things that have zero import
