Description

BOP is shared.
I will attempt to argue that some races are bad for society. Con should attempt to argue that this is not the case.

Resolution and BOP
The resolution of this debate is that some races are bad for society.
To win this debate; I as PRO must successfully prove that at least some races are bad for society. This debate has a shared burden of proof. If CON is unable to show that no race is bad for society, CON has lost this debate.
Having said this, it is time to present my case to the voters.

Public "street races" are bad for society.
The practice of street racing is defined as follows:
Street racing is typically an unsanctioned and illegal form of auto racing that occurs on a public road.

C1.
Street racing on public roads is a dangerous practice that has been declared illegal in many areas. The reason this practice is so dangerous is quite evident;
1) It is known to cause severe damage, and injury.
2) It takes the lives of innocent people
3) It makes roads unsafe. Racing on the highway is a situation where any mistake on a high to extreme speed progression can be fatal.

Below are statistics by the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) that indicate the negative impacts, deaths, and damages caused by public street/road racing.
  • In 2001, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that police listed street racing as a factor in 135 fatal crashes. The total was up from 72 street-racing-related fatalities reported in 2000.
  • In 1999, the Florida Department of Highway and Safety for Motor Vehicles reported 28 accidents related to illegal street racing, with 2 fatalities and 27 injuries. In 2000, the agency reported 39 racing accidents, with 1 fatality and 55 injuries. In 2002, there were 48 racing accidents, 1 fatality, and 60 injuries.

C2
In street racing, people ignore laws designed for public road safety.
  • 1. Governments primarily establish speeding regulations, also known as speed limits, to reduce risks imposed by drivers speed choices. Public street racing openly goes against these regulations. I believe there are necessary reasons in which speeding is beneficial; police officers speed in high-volume chases, medical teams speed to save a victim, and firefighters often speed to stop an emergency. Racing on public roads for fun, however, puts the lives of innocent people at risk and is on balance, a completely unnecessary activity.
  • 2. In street racing, people often ignore traffic light laws, and run directly through them. Running through red lights often results in the typical "T bone accident," in which one party collides with the side of a passing vehicle. In fact, Red-light running is responsible for 28% of crash deaths that occur at intersections with traffic signals, and runners kill on average 2 people each day in the United States. Again, there are similar situations when running a red light can be acceptable (medical, police, etc.) but when people run red lights for the sake of their amusement, they risk the lives of other innocent drivers, and make roads more dangerous for mere fun, which is unacceptable.

Roads are how citizens travel from varying destinations. The reason we have road laws is to keep everyone safe, by ensuring people use the road safely and responsibly. Public street races violate these laws, and significantly endanger parties involved, as well as innocent drivers and people, making them bad for society.

The syllogism I want the voters to understand is this:
  • p1) public street races ar bad for society
p2) public street/road races are types of races
    c) some races are bad for society

Conclusion
I have shown that public street racing is bad for society because it causes many deaths, puts innocent people at risk, causes damage, and makes public roads more dangerous. The reason people engage in this activity is for entertainment, but risking the lives of innocent people for entertainment is not good for a functioning society, nor is practicing auto sports on public facilities designed for civilians to use responsibly and get from one place to another.
Street races are indeed races, therefore at least some races are bad for society.
