Description

My proposal: Bring the US draft back.
JoeBob wins this debate if he proves that my proposal would harm the US.

Round 1
Pro
#1
There are 2 million Ukrainian troops as of now.
18 million more troops would be the final nail in the coffin for Putin.

  • 3 million troops are currently part of the US military.
  • 15 million civilians are registered with the Selective Service.
Drafting and deploying everyone in the Selective Service would flatten Russia.

The US should bring the draft back.

18 million more troops would be the final nail in the coffin for Putin.
Would it though? Yes, we may have that many people, but it’s not instant to get 18 million men across the ocean to fight in a war we have little part of.
Another fact is that it is almost certain that Putin would use nukes on us.
This is from the Time Magazine:
President Vladimir Putin said that Russia is ready to use nuclear weapons if there is a threat to its statehood, sovereignty or independence, voicing hope that the U.S. would refrain from actions that could trigger a nuclear conflict.

If we invade with those troops that you say we must use and that it won’t harm the US, it is almost certain there would be another world war, but with a lot of nukes being detonated, resulting in more loss of life than if we had not used the Selective Service.

JoeBob clearly does not know anything about international politics.

If Putin were to use nukes, the US would retaliate accordingly.
If the US takes back Ukraine, Putin would have to choose between:
  • Loosing Ukraine
  • Loosing everything
Putin's threats are empty.

Yes, and how would they retaliate? The most likely answer is nukes, and then they would use nukes.

Another reason is that many people in the selective service have other jobs. Without these jobs the economy would be more unstable then it already is after both COVID, and the war in Ukraine.

If the US takes back Ukraine, Putin would have to choose between:
Loosing Ukraine
Loosing everything
The more you think about it, the more the bottom option is what they would choose. If America does invade Russia, then they would have no choice. If Russia surrenders, America wouldn’t let them keep their current land. They would most likely take some of it. If they fight back however, it could be a HUGE payout for them.

It would harm the US if we brought the draft back.

The Economy

As of 2022, 15 million people are registered for the Selective Service. Many of these people work important jobs in the economy, such as farmers, doctors, construction workers, teacher, etc. Without these important jobs, the economy will heavily suffer from missing jobs.
  • Higher Prices
The economy will also suffer from higher prices of goods. Since people that work as farmers and at manufacturing facilities will be in the draft, the prices will rise as there is no supply, which leads us to my next point.
  • Famine
Since the prices of goods will rise, there will be more and more families that cannot afford these prices. This will lead to nationwide famine, and people will have to ration what little they have.
  • Quality over Quantity
As of right now, our military is mostly trained. If we bring in millions of people from the Selective Service, these people will need to be trained. This training can take up to four months, which in war is a long time when someone is invading you. And even after this, not only will they have no experience, but their purpose of being in the draft is useless at the moment, which leads into my next point.
  • No Reason to
At this moment, there is no reason to use the draft. In every instance of the US activating the draft, there was a reason TO use the draft. The draft is used for when we need more troops than we currently have. We are not fighting in any wars that need more troops than we can handle. If we do activate the draft, then it will harm the US than do good.
