also, if you were wondering how minimum wage can be one of my strongest topics, despite being so short, it's because I did a lot of research on it for school. Here's my layout
Min Wage Raise Issue (at least 15$/hour in the US)
Pros:
Economic
- $15,080/yr not enough (can’t keep up with inflation)
- “Subsidies...create disincentives”, “Marginal tax rate”
- Not reduce employment
- low-wage workers are going on strikes in the tens of thousands
- Reduce poverty
- Some helps to low wage, w/o negatives
- Increase purchase power
HELP MENTALLY
- Improve mental health, scholar support -> COUNTER, SCHOLAR (UK)
- Reeve + Randomized studies -> COUNTER: “ The most important concern is that it was not a true experiment, because workers could not be randomly selected to either get a wage increase or not. So it’s possible that the improvement in the mental health of workers who got a raise had some other cause.”
- Normal policies fail
- Large population affected
Cons:
JOBS
- Doesn’t reduce poverty
- Reduce job hours, Fewer available jobs
- Forces price raise
- Trade Unions Possibility
- Doesn’t solve problems as well as possible alternatives
- Higher taxes, “Very thin margins”
