Well, not in the American sense.

Though people do define themselves similarly, have similar long standing associations and enjoy dropping names into conversation.

But to be perfectly honest, I'm not sure that loose educational associations to prominent people satisfies much more than the ego. 

Which is not to say that ego is not mentally beneficial, if it instils a sense of positivity.
