So, after the last thread I posted, which had its ups and downs, I thought it would be good to make a new one to broaden and refocus the discussion a bit. But first, I want to summarize some of what happened since the previous thread ("Moving More Quickly On Moderation") was made.
- We will probably have someone in a moderation role soon, per Mike's reaction to the thread
- Mike also implemented a block function not too long after that thread was posted
I don't want to summarize people's discussion points, as I don't want to cheapen any arguments that were made. Those are a bit more tangible to just say outright. But anyways, there's something that Blamonkey mentioned in the midst of the flame war that caught my attention. He mentioned the old Debate.org Orientation Thread, which has been absorbed into the newer, still pinned New Members Read Me Thread, on the main DDO forum.
Getting back on task, I think that a thread similar to this that explains the jargon behind debating, voting, mafia etc. would allow new people to become better acquainted with the site and competitive debate in general. This is assuming, of course, that we do not have one right now. Please correct me if we do have one. If not, a DDO veteran who has the time would preferably be the best bet in creating this type of thread.
I like the idea of making a new one of these, even though DA has a ways to go on attracting new clicks to the site, on the occasion we do it would be helpful to make one of these. And, in the spirit of community, we can follow up our recent issue with working on something cooperative. And, maybe some structuring can provide a reason for other old DDO members to try DA out. Of course, there is some things that need to get in order first.
We should also include the basic rules of the site in said thread and expected punishments for violations, (i.e. temp-banning, removal of thread etc.) By making the rules clear we would likely deter people from engaging in dubious behavior. I guess a rulebook for the site and general recommendations on debateart activity would be what I am advocating for.
With this in mind, some of this will have to be made after we have a stable moderation system. There was discussion of things of this nature in Virtuoso's Site Rules/Terms of Service thread, but now that we've had a few weeks on this site and it's starting to look like a long-term thing, I think it's time to start thinking about making something official. My suggestion, though Mike has the final say on everything, is that when a mod is appointed they organize a vote on motions for rules for the site, and what passes becomes a part of that.
Other Ideas
Aside from more formal matters I think our informal community aspects could use a bit of work. We have a "beginner's" series of mafia running, and I take that as a good sign for that - I thought it would have taken until September, at least, to start any forum game. But aside from that, it's been a bit weak. I understand a few members are going back to school and such things, but there are some things I would like to see happen on the site in the relative near future.
- Weekend games Hangouts (e.g. mafia, risk)
- AMAs, or Hangouts-on-Air discussions (I'd just suggest to spread them out a bit)
- Occasional live debates
My hope with these is that maybe some links to these get sent to DDO members that haven't made the jump over here, so it can not only get people talking to each other here but attract the attention of others.
Those are all of my thoughts I wanted to share for now. I want to hear from all of you on what I said, or any ideas you might have for what to do around here.

That's fine. I don't think it should go further than that.

@Castin
I don't think forum blocks should be a thing on a debate site.

Pena Nieto is as free trade as it is. Obrador is a classic Mexican socialist, who is likely to promote the return of publicly-owned industry and may give Trudeau more trouble on the energy sector than he's given the Trump administration. He probably took part in these negotiations in an effort to make his changes easier to implement upon his term beginning rather than if Pena Nieto negotiated alone.
And unless a three-way deal is negotiated by the end of the week, the U.S. Congress will not be able to approve it by the time Obrador takes office, meaning an actual trade deal might not arise until December, at which point the U.S. Congress won't be able to approve the trade deal until the next one is sworn in. This is due to the fact that Congress must take 90 days to review any trade deal changes before approving them.

I don't expect this to survive Pena Nieto's term, but I'm fine with doing away with NAFTA.

I expected as much when I made the thread.

I'm starting to get really tired. I hoped to see XLAV post again before sleeping. I don't think that will happen.

I'm disappointed with the activity the last 24 hours. So I'm going with my strongest scum read.

That's a good idea, but we should wait until a mod is commissioned to avoid infighting on whose guide to use.

If your only method of argument is unreasonable, stubborn invalidation of eyewitness proof to the other side, there's a problem.

If he's inactive today, and doesn't respond in PM overnight, he will be eligible for replacement and the request sent out 🤔
Will there be a request sent out?

I don't think there's any need to go beyond PMs and accepting debates, anyway, so just wondering.

Low-skill worker immigration is almost entirely bad because it serves to lower wage and labour standards, and it often puts people at risk for human trafficking and coercion.
High-skill worker immigration is fine. It helps keep the United States from having shortages in necessary capacities.
But if someone wants to immigrate to America, ethnonationalism isn't the way to go in arguments on that matter. It has no logical historical basis for the country.

What does the block function work for? PMs, or anything else as well?

It's more the social role of the moderator that is needed at this point. I don't think you, given what you've said, can do that and work on the coding for the site at the same time.

If you can't give someone direct access to admin functions, you could have someone be a moderator and, when necessary, give you accounts to ban and timeframes for those bans, and threads or posts to be deleted.

Lol. Outside game influence. I'm not stalking someone and seeing them active elsewhere on the internet and using that. I'm not using their activity or lack thereof in another mafia game against them or in defense of them. That's abusive OGI. Looking at his profile and seeing that he was last online a week ago is not. But even then, he confirmed a few days ago, so I don't even need to look at his profile to think he isn't online.

@David
I asked you a question. I'd like an answer on it.
My read on RM leans scum - not enough for me to put him at 3/4 but enough for me to be suspicious. He's been overly aggressive rather than defending himself consistently with reason, and I think that's more in line, considering his personality, with him as scum than town. For me putting any pressure on him for editing posts and generally acting scummy, he responded by VTLing me. It's anti-information behaviour that concerns me, with his idea of a quick no lynch instead of allowing reads to be made, and then wanting people to just shut up and trust him rather than giving any reason for his ideas.

I don't consider that, a basic fact, game-changing OGI. He's outright not logged in.

It's good to know there will be a block function soon but we will need moderation to deal with reports and to intervene when flame wars get out of hand.
