I find it very appealing on paper, but the details still sound iffy/foggy to me. (How does something "sound" foggy? Nvm.) It relies on subjective measurements. There's a degree of subjectivity in all moderation of course, but this strikes me as an even higher degree.

Yeah, I like Sam as well and was surprised to hear this. And I actually can't see any more than you do, I turned down the position of full time assistant mod. Did Sam unleash out of the blue, was there an argument or something?

In general I think because many of our members were from DDO, where there was no active moderation to speak of and you had an anything-goes environment, many people may have forgotten what moderation looks like. Laying down new law after such a long period of lawlessness is bound to be turbulent.

As a side note, Poly is actually perfectly capable of intelligent and contributive posts, I just have no idea what determines the Jekyll/Hyde factor. Or what her problem with me and others is.

God has always been presented to me as beyond my comprehension. So no, I obviously cannot comprehend what is beyond my comprehension.

@Goldtop
If you want to comprehend God, just read the Bible. God is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.
Heh. Straight out of The God Delusion.

I also liked his description of the deist God.

"Compared with the Old Testament's psychotic delinquent, the deist God of the eighteen-century Enlightenment is an altogether grander being: worthy of his cosmic creation, loftily unconcerned with human affairs, sublimely aloof from our private thoughts and hopes, caring nothing for our messy sins or mumbled contritions.

The deist God is a physicist to end all physics, the alpha and omega of mathematicians, the apotheosis of designers; a hyper-engineer who set up the laws and constants of the universe, fine-turned them with exquisite precision and foreknowledge, detonated what we would now call the hot big bang, retired and was never heard from again."

The dirty word, "religion"
-->
@Mopac
Sincerity of faith and charity. Mercy and Truth. To love one's neighbor as oneself and to love The Truth with all one's heart, soul, mind, and strength. In Spirit and Truth.

Here is the main difference between my religion and yours.

Knowledge is not the same thing as Truth. Our focus is on valuing God above all, who is The Truth, not humans. It is out of our love for God that we love others, and it comes from that, loving The Truth. So while the end result might seem similar or even the same, they are in fact very different. Our love of others comes from a sincere humility. The love of the humanist comes from a pride of humanity. Our love of The Truth comes from a sincere humility. Faith in science comes from a pride of knowledge.
Unless you believe you are the God you claim to worship, you do not know where any individual humanist's love comes from. Reminding yourself that you do not possess intimate information about what motivates the beliefs of others is also an important form of humility. And making uninformed assumptions that gratify your own beliefs is also a form of pride.

Here’s a list of users who have been temp banned:

RationalMadman
Nd24007
SupaDudz
Polytheist_Witch
Ethang5
Goldtop
SamStevens
Wylted
Tyrone
probably some others

Most of these happened more recently.
Ah, so what. Those are about the numbers I was expecting. I don't get why people are clutching their pearls over temp bans. Unless personal attacks are stricken from the CoC, this is what you get. At this point I half wish they were, dealing with them is a mess. Of course, then you'd just have users like Poly tearing around completely unpunished.

Also I'm not sure why you formed an opinion about this ban before you knew anything about it.

Time dilation
And how fast an object accelerates affects how much time slows down. If you went close to the speed of light, time would all but stop for you, relative to everyone else. How much mass an object has also affects how much time slows down.

If you teleported me to the edge of a black hole, an object of such intense gravity that not even light can escape, to distant onlookers I would be stuck there, falling, freeze frame, forever -- my family would age and die watching me there, my family's next generation would age and die watching me there, and on and on through the generations until I became unrecognizable to modernity, and then until the human race itself faded from existence entirely. From my perspective, no time would have passed whatsoever.

Of course, that doesn't explain why acceleration and mass affect time. And the noble question of science is Why? Why? Why thingy do that thingy? (The title of one of Einstein's lesser known papers. Why Thingy Do That Thingy? by Albert Einstein. Such a great mind.) But my posts are already too long to go delving into spacetime and whatnot.

@Logical-Master
To my understanding, what affects how a human observer experiences time is:

  1. Mass.
  2. Speed.
1 - Objects of enough mass create gravity. The closer you are to a source of gravity like our Earth, the more time slows down; the further you are, the more it speeds up.

2 - The greater your velocity, the more time slows down.

The space station our astronaut spent his time in was accelerating at over 17,000 miles per hour. Yes, 17,000. It's kept at that speed to make sure docking is as terrifying as possible for new astronauts.

I kid -- it's going as fast as it has to. So if he spent over a year in space constantly accelerating at 17,000 miles per hour, time would have slowed down for him by a tiny amount. Being farther from Earth's center of gravity than us, he was actually subject to a tiny speeding up effect as well, but presumably his acceleration was so great it easily overcame this.

Mini arguments for God's existence

@EtrnlVw
Wait a minute...you're convinced? since when lol?
What do you mean? Have we discussed the anthropic principle before?

Anyway, it goes without saying that interpretations are subjective. But religion always claims to be revealed truth -- that is, it makes claims about reality, at which point it shoves its way into science's territory. You're right, science has no agenda against theism, but it also cannot be ignored when religion makes false claims about reality that science disproves, or fails to support.

Anything done out of an abundance of caution is improperly done. I have never been a part of a forum where the majority of users thought the mod team was incompetent. It should tell you something that even mortal enemies like me and RM can set aside our differences because of a common problem that is harming the community. You can bet when Superman and Lex Luthor team up, it is because there is a great threat to humanity.
Which one of you is Lex and which is Superman?

I haven't really seen anything to support that it's the majority of users. I think most members probably don't care and are wrapped up in their own site interests.

Aw, get better soon Mike.

Deleting content that violates the CoC was bish's original policy, I believe. Then there was some heated member protest about that policy. And deleting offending posts means the public can't tell why someone was banned, which can make it look like members are just being silently assassinated without provocation.

But yeah, it probably deserves its own thread.

Mini arguments for God's existence

@EtrnlVw
This is the only one I find compelling to any degree. It really is uncanny. But it's been rebutted by arguments such as the anthropic principle.

You should remember that all theories are interpretations of the evidences available including materialism/atheism. So while some theory may be compelling it's only an interpretation either way (whether it be Theism or atheism) and so many believe a Theistic interpretation of what we study through science is superior, or even what we experience from our own perceptions. Science is a neutral study and has no ideologies or preferences and therefore the interpretation is up for grabs, what one believes to be superior is up for interpretation at one level which is why it's important to remain open and at least neutral about what science finds or studies.
IMO the conscious nature of what we experience is better articulated through spirituality because it reaches where a materialistic study is incapable. In essence, if one accepts a materialistic/atheistic ideology they have accepted an incomplete study or theory through an incomplete study and theory.
Hey, you're back. 'Bout time.

I can't tell from your post whether you're coming out for or against fine-tuning. I am convinced by the anthropic principle, personally.

@SkepticalOne
The problem is that suppose the varied laws meant carbon could not form.
That is only a problem if we assume we know all the possible ways life can manifest, and/or that life HAD to be.
I admit it's hard for me to imagine that complex life could have evolved from hydrogen and helium. Silicon, maybe. I'm not enough of a chemist to know if silicon could form in conditions where carbon could not.

But the important thing to take from that would be:
hard for me to imagine =/= impossible

What the human mind can understand is a pitifully tiny percentage of reality.

The 'god particle' meme seems to have originated as the title of a book written in 1993, but I don't remember anybody taking about 'god particles' until very recently, ie before the discovery of the higgs boson round 2013, twenty years later.

I think physicists have done their best to disown that nickname dredged up from the past when it was a publishers idea of a good comercial title for yet another another routine pop-sci book.

But it has made people more aware of some obscure science even if very few understand it.   I don't understand it, but if it is called the 'god particle' i know it must be important so i want to know more.  The 'higgs particle' must be the most boring and uninspiring name imaginable!
It could be framed as a choice between causing misconception or simply attracting no public interest at all.

It's the particle without which nothing in the universe would have mass, I understand the nickname. If I'd been writing a book on it I might have reached for it myself.

Really? I would've pegged bish as definite aristocracy on DDO. I had perceived him as being part of that whole airmax clique. My perspective is as an outsider though.

Lunatic and TheHammer are both users I don't really see post very often but have been put forward as Royals. Like you said, it's probably imported. I haven't seen them have a really strong presence on DART. Don't even have a defined idea of them really, except that TheHammer seems to have some definite grudges from DDO days.
