I want to thank everyone for your feedback. Bsh is going to be posting a MEEPs very soon and so this thread is now locked. Please please please participate in this MEEPs. It is one of the most important MEEPs yet.
Thank you

I support a lookout window between the voting and final period. This is something @Mike will have to program. Making the mods confirm all the votes will probably add unnecessary burden to our work.
Also I think it would be nice to have a comment box when you are reporting a vote explaining why you are reporting it. A lot of good votes go reported for no apparent reason.

I've been thinking a lot recently of the philosophy of the mind and whether the mind and the brain are synonymous or if there is an immaterial aspect of the brain. I came across a fascinating story of twins that share a brain.
Here's some key takeaways from the articles that I read:
Twins joined at the head — the medical term is craniopagus — are one in 2.5 million, of which only a fraction survive. The way the girls’ brains formed beneath the surface of their fused skulls, however, makes them beyond rare: their neural anatomy is unique, at least in the annals of recorded scientific literature. Their brain images reveal what looks like an attenuated line stretching between the two organs, a piece of anatomy their neurosurgeon, Douglas Cochrane of British Columbia Children’s Hospital, has called a thalamic bridge, because he believes it links the thalamus of one girl to the thalamus of her sister. The thalamus is a kind of switchboard, a two-lobed organ that filters most sensory input and has long been thought to be essential in the neural loops that create consciousness. Because the thalamus functions as a relay station, the girls’ doctors believe it is entirely possible that the sensory input that one girl receives could somehow cross that bridge into the brain of the other. One girl drinks, another girl feels it.Source: https://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/29/magazine/could-conjoined-twins-share-a-mind.html

Except for the extra work for the mods.
The work isn't the issue. The biggest hurdle is working with the ELO system and the way Mike has it coded

@Ramshutu
Mike is working on that. Unfortunately, it'll be a bit difficult. Even after that update, it will only apply to debates after that update. Mike probably won't be able to let us delete debates post voting period like the ones magic ruined

@Ramshutu
A primary concern is that you prevent new voters being able to place votes on debates.Depending on a medal that can be earned by clicking on a link, is not a barrier.
It's not a barrier IMO if we make it clear that they have to read the rules and COC in order to vote. It takes 3 seconds and they can't claim they didn't read or know about the TOS.

Here's a new thing that I'm going to start doing. There have been numerous cases in the past week of new members casting vote bombs. In response to this, I will delete the vote and revoke their permission to vote. After that I will contact the user and inform them about the COC and the standards that we have.
Here's a proposal: We have a badge that you receive by reading the COC. I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to make someone read the COC before voting. If Mike can make a badge when you read it, I'm sure he can make it so that you can't vote unless you read it.
What do you all think?

@Castin
Got a bit of whiplash there, heh. I thought you were agreeing that getting rid of voters who have never debated wouldn't be a big deal. I take it you are in fact against that. I wouldn't mind losing my voting rights for the sake of security, if that was necessary. From what I see, it just probably isn't.
I think you got to keep things in balance. Someone like you who proves to the moderator team that they're a worthy member should certainly be allowed to vote. On the other hand, allowing new members to instantly vote have proven to create integrity issues.
This is why this discussion is needed.

This would be interesting. I proposed before creating a voting bloc like we had on DDO. We'd assign someone to be the voting czar and assign people to vote

@Castin
He asked me to vote in the GMO debate, but I said no. I guess he got desperate after he was unable to scare up more honest votes.
Yeah -- there's a reason why I did not vote on that debate. I felt it would be highly inappropriate for me to vote on it.

Very unbecoming of a biology teacher. ;-)
Or any teacher for that matter. If he can't cope with this, how the hell does he cope with hundreds of idiot teenagers all day long?

I understand your concerns about that. IP addresses don't tell reveal anything revealing and personal.

Update
Mike and I have had a very long conversation and did a long investigation. Our results show that Magic attempted to cheat by using the DebateVoter account. We also proved that he attempted to cheat by voting for himself at the last minute in his debates with death23. Needless to say they are all permanently banned.
Many thanks to Ramshutu, RM, and death23 for some awesome scum hunting!
The mod team apologizes to those who had their debates messed up by these cheaters. Mike will hopefully be adding the ability to remove votes after the voting period to add to the voting integrity.
Thank you.

Yeah - this is just a discussion of what it should look like. We should take what we gleen from this and put it up for a MEEPs

2 factor confirmation is more of a extra security for logging in. I think it's super helpful for the admins to require 2FA, but I dont think it'll solve the problem.

Greetings!
This past week there was a nasty breach in voting integrity. The debate in question is here. At the last second, four votes came in. Two votes were voted bombs for Pro and two were counter-bombs for con. Needless to say, the moderator team is doing the best they can to get to the bottom of what happened and who is responsible. Here's what we definitely know so far:
(1) Entropy/Neg Entrop are the same people
(2) vave/veze are the same people
There is no IP match between the two so we are certain that there are two people at play. If you have any information on what happened, please let the administrative team know immediately.
That being said, Mike and I have had a long conversation today. What we are thinking of is adding a few measures to ensure that new accounts can't be made to simply vote and leave. Here's what we are considering:
(1) Require 3 debates that have at least 3 rounds, are not forfeited, and are not troll debates; OR
(2) Require at least 500 quality forum posts; OR
(3) Prove to the moderator team that you understand the voting process by giving us three quality RFDs plus 200 forum posts
I would also love to hear your thoughts on how to ensure the integrity of the voting process.
Another point to make, we are considering adding the following:
(1) The ability for the moderator team to view full email addresses (currently the moderator team is not able to view email addresses); and
(2) The ability to view the entire IP address for accounts
Any other feedback and suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi all,
I am really sick right now and will probably have to go to the hospital. I will have limited access over the next few days. Any questions and reports should be directed to bsh1. Hopefully, I will be back to normal in about a week.
I also apologize to Ramshutu and Magic for forfeiting my debates with them. Hope they forgive me and will allow us to revisit those topics when I am well.
Love y'all

Is it true that a ban explanation is currently available to anyone by private request?
No. We maintain a private ban log via google docs, but we do not share that specific doc with anyone.

This is kinda why I hoped the ban log would pass. An anonymized ban log would kinda defeat the purpose because they'd easily be able to figure out who it was.

You'd most likely be a part of it. You are certainly a strong debater on non-troll/non-rap topics.

I like that. This is what edeb8 has. It's a (secret topic) and you can decide to do pro or con. It's computer generated.

@RationalMadman
This is part of our plan. We would create a professional voter team to vote on debates to ensure at least 3 quality RFDs per debate. We may have it set so that you can select open, judiciary, or professional votes.

@warren42
Pretty much.
This will kinda separate the professional debates from the rap battles. That way the good debates don't get burried in with a bunch of troll debates
