How do you feel about adding an "archive" forum where we move all old moderation topics to?I would not be opposed. However, I think unpinned and locked items naturally floating to the back would organically handle that within the Site Management forum.
True, but it may get confusing at first. I feel like an archived section would be good to make it clear which threads are active and which ones are old.

@coal
My suggestion would be to stop moderating votes. Let anything go, and see what happens.If specific people abuse the process, deal with them appropriately; but do it outside the context of "voting moderation". It's a user harassment issue at that point.
I respectfully have huge problems with the anything-goes solution. First, it drives away quality members of the site. Why would I waste a whole month of work on a debate knowing that most of them are going to be vote bombs or counter vote bombs? Secondly, it will significantly deteriorate the quality of votes cast on the site. Every "counter vb" vote cast is a vote that could have been a real and thorough RFD.
I actually did an entire debate on this back at DDO https://www.debate.org/debates/On-balance-the-current-voting-moderation-standards-have-been-a-net-harm-to-DDO./1/

@coal
The best way to incentivize voting would be to reduce the barrier to entry. You have two choices: maybe potentially higher quality votes or more votes, but never both. Pick one.
This is something I'm willing to consider. What would your suggestion be?
Created:

@coal
Ironically enough, I agree with pretty much everything you said, especially reason 2. With my time in class, I really don't have enough time to read a 5-round debate and thoroughly analyzing it. Sadly, most debates are either ff, concessions, or troll debates. For point 2, I've been thinking about making a pinned post on topic suggestions. Your suggestions are quite interesting and will be incorporated in the thread if and when that is made.
As for the final point, I'm open to suggestions on what we can do to incentivize voting.

@Dr.Franklin
did you perma ban him and then he made alt accounts, or was it orginally seven and then he made an alt
As I said in the ban log, it was initially going to be a 7-day ban as I try to be as light as possible, though he replied to me that he has no intention of following the rules. After the ban, he created all of those accounts. There's nothing I can do when you blatantly refuse to follow the rules. The goal of the moderation team is a coaching-first approach. We try to correct your behavior by explaining what you did wrong and how to fix it. If they continue violating the COC, we will eventually have to temp ban you.

This is why we have a public moderation log. I’ll quote the post here
Date: 11/12/2019
Moderator: Joint-modertor decision
PaulVerliane has been permanently banned for making a string of personal attacks and refusal to comply with moderation coaching and intervention. This ban was initially going to be a 7-day ban, but he made it clear that he has no intention to follow the rules in the future.
Let me make this clear, you absolutely may not call people pussy transgender homos, you cannot call people cowardly bitches, and you cannot threaten people. The moderation team does its best to do a "coaching-first" approach, but if you prove you don't want to improve, I'm sorry, but you're gonna have to be shipped out.
Alts: billsands, shockthemonkey, billsands, Graccus. ODIN, JacquesBonhomme, wildbill, AntonZenz123, and more to come...
edit: add ODIN to the list of alts
edit: added AntonZenz123 to list of alts.

Greetings, everybody!
We are in the process of making revisions to the COC. Most of the text is the same, but there are still some significant differences. The proposed changes can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1bcpJ79KM1rOMjgyz5Ssa0T1v0Lj5ybt0LwnD3bXTYNw/edit?usp=sharing
What's New
The text has been reorganized so that the moderation structure is first, then the voting policy, and finally the conduct policy.
The moderation structure text has been changed from "Mod decisions are final and not subject to appeal" to " If you are banned and wish to appeal a ban, you can email the moderation team at [email protected]."
The restraining order section added, " Additionally, a user may request that an RO be placed between them and another member."
Added the following new rules:
B. The Golden Rule
Treat others as they wish to be treated: If someone makes a reasonable request to you, please comply. In other words, don’t be a dick.
C. Authenticity
You may not:
- Impersonate individuals, groups, or organizations in a manner intended to or likely to deceive others. Parody accounts are acceptable as long as they: are clear that they are a parody and not a parody of other Site users;
- Violate other intellectual property rights;
- Plagiarize content and pass it off as your own; and/or
- Impersonate the staff or the moderation team.
D. Violence and Criminal Behavior
You may not:
- Threaten or promote violence against an individual or group of individuals to include terrorism or violent extremism; or
- Engage in or promote criminal activity;
DebateArt is not responsible or liable for any users that may violate national, international, or local laws. It is your responsibility to know the laws that pertain to you and act lawfully at all times.
Added a link to the privacy policy
and finally added a "harassment policy."
J. Harassment
You may not:
- Harass other members;
- Stalk other members;
- Encourage harassment; and
- Post harassing or hateful images in your profile photo.
If a member politely requests that you leave them alone, do so. Do not vote on their debates and do not follow them around the site.
Is there anything else we should add or take away?

This is actually quite a fascinating post and I am glad you brought this up. I'm a language nerd myself and am always fascinated that a change in emphasis can totally change the meaning of a sentence or phrase. I always try to be careful about how my typed words may be interpreted by others.

The thread began to become toxic and quite a few posts have been reported. That said, we locked it as a way for members to cool down. I have now unlocked the thread.Let me clarify,What rule was broken?Is this the first time this has been done excluding spam threads, moderators threads and callout threads?Why didn't you just suspend the accounts that were toxic instead of locking it?
Sorry, I got a bit busy
1) There were quite a few direct personal attacks in the thread. We decided a cool down period would be helpful. That being said, we will not be using this in the future.
2) I believe so
3) We believed that a ban would be too harsh, especially since there were already complaints about moderation being too heavy. A ban was not appropriate.

- Report debates
- Create debate comments
- Report debate comments
- Cast debate votes
- Report debate votes
- Create forum topics
- Create forum posts

Greetings, everyone!
With the latest release by Mike, the moderation team has access to more control over the permission system. Among them is to ban people from creating forum topics and posts, as well as restricting their access to part of the debate sections. Moving forward, the moderation team believes that it would be beneficial to temporarily revoke permission from one side of the site instead of a full site ban. The advantages the moderation team sees with this are as follows:
1) We believe it will loosen up our moderation grip. There have been some complaints about being too heavy and we want to loosen up our grip some.
2) It enables people to finish up any debates they are currently in and not worry about forfeiting.
3) Even if a user is banned from the debate section (ie voting, creating debates, etc) they will still be able to publish arguments
This is an open discussion and we want to run this policy by you guys.

@coal
If DDO returns, as it should, this site will likely lose membership if you continue to be a tight-assed moderator.I put myself under the first category, as you obviously saw. The fact that you disagree with the joke doesn't mean that it's gone too far. If this is too far, then nearly everything is too far -- which is why you're out of control.
As I mentioned, I will be loosening up my grip. I am sorry you feel that I have been too heavy. I believe we were quite reasonable with the locked thread.

@coal
This is still not an acceptable satire. The COC is quite clear:
The abusive, insulting, or derogatory nature of a comment will be judged based on how a reasonable individual would interpret it. It is not based upon the intentions of speaker, unless those intentions were stated clearly and explicitly prior to the offending remark. Reasonableness is interpreted solely by the mods. The "just kidding" argument is not a valid excuse for actions which can reasonably be interpreted as personal attacks.
This covers any satirical awards like that.

@coal
1) It's not the business of the public to know what action we may or may not take when dealing with a report.Why have you failed to address RM breaking rules to the effect of threatening to "report content to moderation" as being a violation of the code of conduct in and of itself?Locking a thread while you "review" content is nonsense. You continue to moderate with too heavy a hand.
2) The moderation team determined that the dark awards are in violation of the rules as it is a call-out thread. We don't want to facilitate a culture where users call others the "least valuable member."
3) We will be loosening up the moderation standards and revising our policies in the coming weeks.
