New community announcement
I am afraid I am short on time to read the whole thread, but don't worry, the domain won't expire and I keep on paying for the hosting, so the website should continue running just fine. And I will try to work harder on finding the replacement.

@Lemming
Are there financial costs to running DART?
Maybe 40-50$ per month, I forgot the exact numbers, but it's not much more than that.

Do you make money by owning DART?
I make a negative amount of money haha

'Could you make money owning DART?
I guess it's not impossible, depends on how you run it and how much money you have for marketing and whatnot.

New life for the website
Hi folks,

As you might have noticed, I am barely available these days due to some challenges in life and I figured that it's probably time to move the ownership of the website to somebody else, that is, to try to sell it or donate it. I still need to do some research on how difficult it's going to be to transfer everything, because frankly I've never done anything like that, but that shouldn't take too much time. Anyway, if anyone is interested, please DM me.

When it comes to the tech stack:

It's almost a fully server rendered site implemented with Elixir/Phoenix. For those familiar with Ruby or Python, it shouldn't be too hard to grasp.
The front-end is mostly jQuery, coz for such a simple interface, it made no sense to bring up heavy artillery like React. Although the chat is implemented with VueJS, due to its highly interactive nature. I can provide more details in DM if interested.

I want, no, I need autosave on my arguments.
I will check it out guys, should be easy enough to add a basic protection mechanism. I don't know why it's not there, I must have missed it.

There are hardly any rated debates here as of now.
Also I would recommend that in the description about debate descriptions, putting definitions that clarifies the topic setup is recommended by text, if descriptions on what descriptions(or even short descriptions) are exists. I don’t know because god knows how long I have been since I have created one, but a recommendation about a recommendation is a recommendation.
This one is too meta for me, not sure I follow.

Regarding the rest, it makes sense to me and I will definitely try to leverage ChatGPT API somehow but the issue is that it's not free and we stumble upon the funding issue again, at least if we want to use it actively.

No, you replied “word”. That is what I am not confident in interpreting.
Ah, nah, I just confirmed that sites like this one are not in a huge demand these days.

I am not sure the message went through clearly. I would request a clarification if it is possible.
What message exactly? Your point in general or you mean something else?

 It made the site less competitive in the attention economy.

Thanks for the ideas but I am afraid it's not simple: a lot of new users are not these responsible members that will try to figure everything out before starting a debate, they will be doing whatever they want, often creating rated debates and forfeiting everything and then forgetting about the website the next day. So that's why we have qualifications, it's a way to kinda sandbox the beginners or folks that just want to have fun from those that want to take it to another level doing it with the rating system on. But I do agree that 5 debates for getting the qualification may be too much, I will change that soon and we'll see what happens.

The idea behind the rated debates is not to shield anybody, but to make sure that before participating in the rated debates, the member understands how it all works. Also it avoids situations when it's easy to grind rating on the new accounts that don't know what they are doing.

Also I believe a while ago I added "two weeks" as an option for the voting period for the rated debates, it wasn't allowed in the beginning.

But you are right, I should probably reduce the number of required debates for being able to participate in the rated debates. I will drop it to 3, I think.

Thanks mate, I will check the error message, must have been a bad copy paste. When it comes to the glitch, I think the issue is the editor that we use here, it generates HTML tags and they can bloat the content and therefore trigger the validation errors, even though the amount of the actual content inside the tags is not that large.

@Melcharaz
there is a way to make blocking actually block words and identifiers (for lack of better words) of people via javascript (and webviewer for certain phones) to make it where i no longer see their names and posts. why has there not been a similar development on this website? Im sure that you can implement it if you wanted to but it seems like there is no desire to. Is the nuiance of coding it that great for a website?
I can implement many things, but there are priorities and hiding comments and posts is not one, at the moment. I am not even mentioning the amount of potential edge cases for a feature like that.

almost 3 days and not a response. It seems to me that you have no intrest in developing it
in which case, you allow spread of harassment, trolling and poor conduct which hurts a site dedicated to debates, instead of helping it.
if a site cant survive just because people no longer see a persons comments or debates, well, it wasnt much of a site to begin with.
Frankly, I fail to understand what you are trying to say here.

All of that apart, do you understand that this is a website that doesn't even cover its expenses? And you are demanding stuff like it's unicorn start-up with millions of dollars of investments. Man, I don't know, you could at least donate something just for decency sake before demanding stuff in such a disrespectful manner. Have some appreciation for my free work here, okay?

Everything about Java is so utterly cumbersome and shit.

@BearMan
I don’t know about Haskell, but functional approach becomes quite popular, even in languages like JavaScript. But these days I mostly use Elixir and it’s amazing and way simpler to understand compared to Haskell.

@Math_Enthusiast
Hi there and welcome aboard :)

One thing I would recommend is to find someone here who's also passionated about math and directly challenge him or her to a debate, because otherwise it may be a slow process or you may end up having some new uninterested user that will accept the debate and forfeit all the rounds and that could be quite discouraging.

Also if you have any technical questions or ideas about the website, feel free to ping me and I will be glad to help :)

One thing though is that the site is still going through some reorganization so some docs or forum threads may be outdated.

What is everyone's investing strategy with cryptocurrency
-->
@Lair77
Buy the major coins (i.e. bitcoin).  Alt-coins are high-risk.

Buy low, sell high.  Buy down, sell up.  Buy after corrections.  Never FOMO.

Don't put the majority of your investing into cryptocurrency.  Maybe 10-20% if that, but diversify the rest into other things (i.e. index funds, business, real estate, collectors items, etc).  This way, if crypto booms, you profit, but if it crashes, you don't lose most of your life savings.
That's very reasonable advice.

We definitely have interesting times coming our way. A lot of economists predict a full blown depression when every bubble pops. It’s probably time to start buying physical metals or something like that 😕

Yeah, definitely, my plan was to use chatGPT to fill out some initial descriptions and provide a way to edit those to the mods.

But cannot promise a timeline, hopefully tomorrow but not sure how much time I'll have this weekend.

I tested it and it seems to be working, but you can edit your posts only in the first 15 mins after they were created. The limit is there to avoid confusion when people edit their posts long after they were created, especially when there are already existing replies to an old post.

Really? Colored tags for rated debates?
-->
@Best.Korea
You don't have to do it anymore, all the debates on the debates page explicitly have "Type" attribute, which has either "Standard" or "Rated"

I think these days more and more people actually switch to Kotlin, especially after it was declared as the main language for the Android development ( or something along those lines )

Another point is that after having moved to a functional language, OOP started to seem kinda awkward to me.

Really? Colored tags for rated debates?
https://www.debateart.com/debates/4239-universal-healthcare-is-a-bad-idea

This debate is rated but doesn't have that yellow border, because it's not lifted. So it's nothing to do with a type of a debate.

-->
@Intelligence_06
To be honest, I couldn't follow your comment, can you please elaborate?

But I will try to clear some things out anyway:

1. When one is creating a new debate, the default "type" is "standard". If one has the required qualification, it can be changed to "rated".
2. On the page that shows the list of debates, the "type" of a debate is now an attribute called... Well, "Type". It was an icon showing rated debates, now it's more explicit. If anything, I think that's better.
3. That yellow border on some of the debates is not because they are rated, but because they are "lifted". That's a feature for those that have credits, which I usually give for donations.  The problem is that the whole system with showing the credits and all that is still missing, so it's a bit messed up but I will make it more explicit after fixing the search and the avatars.

Support this website or (possibly) Sir.Lancelot's debate website?
Nothing is going to happen to Dart, it’s not degrading or losing lots of users or under a risk of being closed because of $60 of expenses, for gods sake.

I just wanted to distribute my expenses on the community, but if it’s not happening, it doesn’t mean I will close the website or anything like that, please quit this apocalyptic attitude.

If anything, things are actually going well and will be much better if everything goes according to my plan.

I don’t like it either, but there’s only two decent choices: this one and one from google and both of them suck, at least this one doesn’t collect all the possible info about the people, unlike the one from google. If you know some other options, let me know and I’ll look into it
