How is that a solution? What are you going to do for the next 32 days?
Buy food from the store and eat it.
Why do you say that saving for emergencies when times are good is not a good solution to living through emergencies?

Ethan: That wasn't a man that said that, it was a dog.
DD: Yeah well that's true but...
Ethan: Not a particularly wise dog either.
DD: Okay, also true... The point though...
Ethan: And furthermore...
DD: Look guy, it's just the first thing that popped in my head and I went with it.
Ethan: Why did you tag Supa though?
DD: Oh, that? Supa will be fine don't worry. Don't worry about Supa.
Ethan: What?

If you are not familiar with Frankie's ideas about the value of women then you may want to make sure that you have a few bottles of Tylenol on-hand before continuing to engage him on the subject.

Peace is always achievable if you just belie- NULE! NUKE THEM ALL! NUKE ALL THE, NUKE EVERYONE! BURN 'EM DEAD AND GO FOR, JUST DO IT NUKE 'EM ALL DEAD!

I think the point is saying that people should win by merit and we should strive to make merit based decisions when voting or choosing our VPs.
Then you misunderstood his point. Everyone agrees that people should win by merit. That isn't what GP said. GP said people always do win by merit already.
He said that if there was any woman with more merit than Biden she is guaranteed to have beat him in the primary, the implication being that the winner always has more merit.
You can agree with this claim if you want, I really don't care, I am just pointing out that I don't.

What answers would have changed if the AI entities were only sentient?
Why would their desire obligate the scientist?
What is the connection between the AI's sapience and the scientists moral obligation?
Why does their sapience obligate him?
We don't generally apply morality to unthinking animals or non-sentient objects in the same way we do for sapient beings. I see no reason for that to change just because the sapient beings in question are digital rather than flesh and blood.
Does one lack moral authority? Does one carry an ought?
Like I said already whether the rules set by the human in this scenario are more valid depends on what specific rules you might bring up. They would not be valid just because some person said they are, that would be silly.
On what standard are you basing your judgement on the specific laws in question?
The same standard that I would use to evaluate any other moral laws between people.
I look forward to you posting your own answers to these questions.

@ethang5
And what exactly is that internal inconsistency?
The topic of this conversation isn't whether the problem of evil is a valid argument. The topic of this conversation is whether 'problem 3' in the OP is actually a problem.
In the OP you say that they are assuming objective evil must exist in order for the problem of evil to actually be a problem, which is incompatible with moral relativism. Your quote where you make this point:
The force of this objection rests upon moral evil being real and some things being objectively wrong.
If they were actually making this assumption then you would be right. What I am doing is pointing out that they aren't making such an assumption.
Created:
Posted in:
All of the following answers rely on the assumption that when the OP says sentient they are actually referring to sapience (to be sentient and to be sapient are two entirely different things). If this assumption is wrong and the AIs are not sapient, they are only sentient, then I would possibly have different answers.
1) Yes, assuming the AIs have a desire to continue existing.
2) Yes.
3) What do you mean by different? If by different you mean more or less valid then that would depend on the specific laws in question. If by different you mean something else you would have to be more specific.
4) Yes, assuming he can easily do so.
5) The hypothetical AIs sapience is what would cause me to give a yes answer to question one.

It probably is not invalid for someone to take a for-the-sake-of-argument view on something to make a point, but is #3's point itself incorrect?
When someone invokes the problem of evil they are assuming for the sake of argument that morals are derived from a supreme being in order to demonstrate an internal inconsistency in the idea, they don't necessarily believe themselves that an objective evil exists.
Created:

@ethang5
Any thoughts on the 3 problems mentioned in the OP?
You should rethink number three a bit. Why is it invalid for someone to take a for-the-sake-of-argument view on something to make a point?

Plus, a qualified female would have beat him in the primary. Whomever he picks from the list of candidates that dropped out is objectively less qualified than he is for sure.
The winners of elections are not decided based on merit. They are decided based on the democratic process.

It was a clumsy save for you. I'm used to much more polished from you.
Huh? Are you still trying to convince yourself that post 6 was claiming you took the stance that Trump's handout is a good idea? Try rereading it. Here, let me help:
I am curious whether [ethan] can demonstrate any consistency of thought by continuing to [state a dislike for government handouts] now...
See the problem yet or do you need it simplified a bit more?
I am curious whether ethan can demonstrate any consistency of thought...
Still don't get it?
I am curious...
Let me spell it out for you then. If I believed that you had taken the stance that Trump's handout was a good idea then I would not have "been curious" as to whether you thought Trump's handout was a good idea. If I thought I knew the answer I would not have asked the question. This is how words work.
I will restate it another way in case you still don't get it:
1) In the hypothetical world where I accuse you of liking Trump's handout I would say something like "you like Trump's handout"
2) In the hypothetical world where I do not know how you feel about Trump's handout but wanted to know I would say something like "I am curious how you feel about Trump's handout"
3) Post 6 (the post made in reality) matches with the second hypothetical, not the first. This means that reality does not match with the hypothetical where I was accusing you of liking Trump's handout. In other words I was not accusing you of liking Trump's handout (which you said I was doing in post 12).
I dislike being forced to make such a hyper-reductionist post but it seems to be the only way to get you to comprehend simple concepts at times.

@ethang5
How have you interpreted this post as me advocating govt. handouts?
I haven't.
Your opening post does not state your stance on the $1200 handout one way or the other. That is why I asked what your stance on it was.
If you had stated your stance then I would not have asked your stance.
So what do you think about the $1200 handout then? You seem to imply you don't like it based on the quote "He can, but since that is already obvious, he doesn't have to."
You like it or dislike it?

What measures has China taken to contain the outbreak?
What measures can we reasonably expect China to have taken?
If the first is significantly less than the second then it is reasonable to assign blame to China.
I have my own opinions on the second. I genuinely don't have much info on the first.
Created:
Posted in:
How about that $1200 being sent to everyone eh?
I can safely say that I don't like the idea of the federal government handing out checks willy-nilly. I don't much care who is writing the checks because I form my political positions based on whether I like a certain idea rather than whether I like the person proposing the idea.
I wonder if Ethan can say the same. He was saying he disliked government handouts a few months ago, I am curious whether he can demonstrate any consistency of thought by continuing to do so now that it is a politician with a red tie writing the checks.

If they were seeking a golden ideal then the answer to the question in post 56 would be "yes".
You correctly pointed out that the answer to the question in post 56 is actually "no".
Pretty simple.
Created:

@fauxlaw
And, you are correct; they don't want change. That's what "ideal" means.
That is the opposite of what I said...
Created:
-->
@fauxlaw
No, I don't think they'd be concerned by your suggested rate of change.
So they don't have an "ideal climate" (if they did they would not want any change no matter how slow, meaning you would have answered 'yes' to the above instead of 'no').
How is this hard to understand?

I have not said one is significantly more deadly than the other
No, I am the one who said that. Then you pretended to agree with it in post 27. Now you are reneging on that.
Time for you to give a straight answer:
Can you acknowledge that covid-19 is significantly more deadly than flu or will you claim their death rate is roughly the same?
