These should be all the possible solutions containing 9s (based mostly on my work in post 35 so it was not all in vain)!

Easy to come up with now that I know I was misreading the rules this whole time lmao.

Going by my (incorrect) interpratation of rule 9 there can be no 9s. Now that I know that interpratation was incorrect though this puzzle becomes many times easier in SO MANY ways.

Okay so THIS ENTIRE TIME I thought rule 9 was "cannot have 3 or more consecutive odd numbers"

I am ONLY JUST NOW realizing that it is "cannot have more than three consecutive odd numbers"

So three odds in a row are allowed.

So... I have been making my job orders of magnitude more difficult for no reason.

You have no idea how much of a pain in my ass this incorrect interpratation of rule 9 has been lmao.

🤦 Classic DD fail.

See above post. During the hour and a half or so I spent on post 16 I did most of the proof of "9 not being in any solution" in my head due to time constraints so I was not 100% sure that the conclusion was accurate. Now that I have written out the proof in detail though I am confident that I was correct in this conclusion.

Stream of consciousness here, might be hard to follow this post despite the simplicity of its its concepts due to lack of good formatting on my part. You have been warned

So... As to whether there can be any 9s...

Any solution with a 9 would have to have the 9 on one of the sides (truism).

The only possible 3 digit combinations for the 9 that could appear on one of the halves of the solution would have to be some combination from the set of 239 or 249. This is because 1 and 0 cannot be used and any other 3 digit set would violate rule 6 or 10.

2 cannot be adjacent to 3 (rule 7) or 4 (rule 5) so in both these scenarios 9 would have to be the second number of the 3 digit set to seperate the 2 from the other number.

This leaves us with:

293
392
294
492

9 and 3 cannot be adjacent though (rule 5) so we are left with:

294
492

These patterns must appear in any proposed solution with a 9. Can these patterns be ruled out?

In both cases the border of the other 3 digit set is an even number (2 or 4) and an even number cannot be adjacent to another even number (rule 8) so the next digit has to be odd. This leaves us with only 5 or 7 as the candidates for the first digit of the next 3 digit set (because rule 6 and 7 and excluding the number 1)

So now we know any solution containing a 9 must have this pattern of 4 digits:

2945
4927
2947
4925

But rule 7 once again comes in to spoil the fun, leaving us with:

4927
2947
4925

Now let us look at remaining possibilities for the last 2 digits. Looking just at rule 6 we see that what we have to work with is this:

3 (5) 6 (7) 8

Parenthesis indicate numbers available in some of our partly-constructed solutions but not all.

Looking over these numbers we see 8 is excluded from filling out all our partial solutions due to rule 10. So...

3 (5) 6 (7)

All but one of these are odd numbers so we must be careful now of rule 9. In fact because of rule 9 the 6 MUST be used as one of the 2 final digits. The remaining possibilities are thus:

4927_6
2947_6
4925_6
49276_
29476_
49256_

All other iterations have been ruled out unless I made some mistake and the digits permitted to fill these blanks are:

3 (5) (7)

Except 3 and 6 cannot be adjacent (rule 8) so actually we can only fill each of these blanks with a 5 or 7, depending on which does not violate rule 6 for each possibility.

So now...

492756
294756
492576
492765
294765
492567

All of these violate rule 10.

Therefore unless I screwed something up 9 cannot exist in any possible solution.

Oh okay "in your other musings" makes sense and is true.

Rule 8 was actually on the forefront of my mind for much of the time and was key to many of the promised "explanations" that I did not go into detail about but drew conclusions from (the ones with a * next to them). I just didn't go into detail on all of them due to time constraints. I am currently making a post that details my conclusion that no 9s can be used, in part to check whether there was a flaw in my reasoning there.

They don't have a lot of blacks or Asians like we do. They mostly only have whites. The businesses near tourist centers were all pretty chill but when we went exploring the slummier parts of the nearby cities they were just not used to seeing non-whities I guess. Still even then was rare for it to actually become a problem but not unheard of.

Few questions here...

1) Have you actually read the incredibly short blob of text behind this link or just the headline?

2) Do you really think everything in said blob of text is accurate?

3) Do you really think that the "frequently clearing out your prostate reduces the risk of prostate cancer" idea is a myth?

I am going to assume that the answer to one is "I only read the headline" so go ahead and actually read it now. Spoiler alert: it is impossible to answer yes to both two and three without being very dishonest.

Let me guess... This money is going to come from... Lemme get in the Alec mindset here... uhhh... I know! Let's tax something! What should we tax? Uhhh, I am wearing shoes. Tax on shoes? Nah people might just not buy shoes... I know! Let's tax walking! Surgically install a government issued fitbit into everyone's wrist to track the number of steps they take and charge them 2¢ per step.

How to pay for the fitbit installation though? Hmmm... I know! Let's tax something else!

Oh by the way though I am totes a libertarian and totes against excessive taxation especially the blatantly regressive kind.

Even a lot of hardcore anti-socialists have at some point uttered the phrase "well yeah sure communism looks great on paper buuut..."

I never really got that.

Even 'on paper' communism never really appealed to me.

Poll - American Racism
-->
@Mharman
What is the purpose of this poll?

Like I said the idea came to me a few years ago on DDO. At the time racism in America was a pretty common debate topic.

I was living in Romania at the time. It was uncommon but not unheard of (and also perfectly legal) for myself and my fellows going out into town to be refused service in some places for no reason other than the fact that one or more members of our group was black or Asian, something that was understandably unexpected among myself and my comrades since most of us had spent most of our lives in America where such a thing would never even be thought of today.

I had a hypothesis that most people who thought America was particularly racist probably thought so either because they had never lived outside the US and seen how actually racist many other countries are or because they had never lived in the US and only knew about Americas supposed racism problem through exaggerations and outright lies over the internet and other media. The purpose of this poll would have been to test that hypothesis.

It seems that I am a bit late, however, as the "America is racist af" fad appears to have died down in the years since I came up with this idea.

Using just rules 6 and 11 we see all solutions are some combination of the following sets:

234567
234568
234569
234578
234579
234589
234678

However a little basic arithmetic reveals that it is impossible to have any number higher than 5 on the same 'side' of the solution*

That leaves us with:

234567
234568
234569
234578
234579

We can further rule out any solution containing a 9*

Thus our possibilities are narrowed to:

234567
234568
234578

My hope was that by sufficiently limiting the sets I would be able to churn out solutions easily by simply rearranging digits from the limited sets at random until a solution was found. After doing this for about five minutes however I was unable to come up with any solutions. Back to the drawing board, let's see if we can eliminate any more sets.

And it turns out that we can actually eliminate set 234567*

This may in part explain my failure from a moment ago since that was naturally the set I worked with most during those five minutes since it was at the top of the list.

This means that unless I screwed something up (not at all unlikely, see post 11) the only possible sets for solutions are:

234568
234578

The only confirmed solution in this thread is a combination of one of these sets so that is promising. I am now ready to try brute force on one of these sets.

Annnd presto, after about two minutes of executing the non-random method described in my first post using only numbers of this limited sequence I am finally able to find a solution (though it took well over two minutes to narrow the possibilities down to these two sets... Nearly an hour and a half working on and off. Call it about an hour).

You get extra kudos because answers with three even numbers including 4 and 8 are the hardest to figure out. Good work!

While working on this I thought I had a proof worked out that no solution could contain a 9 but this statement is making me doubt this (after eliminating all possible sets containing a 9 I was left with only sets that had three even numbers including a 4 and 8). I am having trouble finding any flaw in my proof though. Can you confirm whether any solutions contain a 9 and if so provide an example? This would help me identify the flaw in my reasoning if there is any.

Conservatism tends to be more socially authoritarian so yes that fits fine with Alec being a conservative.

He is hardcore conservative too. For some weird reason he will claim that he is a libertarian but one glance at his famously regressive tax ideas in his ASTAP / Project 15 thread (and tbh most other threads or posts from him too) will reveal that to be blatantly false. He is further right than anyone on this site as far as I know and that is 100% not an exaggeration.

Actually this just popped into my head a minute or two after I said "I will look at it later" and I wish to post it now so I do not forget.

So, firstly there is a sort of hidden rule that we can... interpret I guess, for lack of a better word... from rule 10. I will call this 'rule 11' and it says "All six digits together must add up to 30 or less"

Because we cannot use 0 or 1 we can use rule 11 to vastly narrow the possible options because 2+3+4+5+6+7=27, very close to 30.

I will use this as a first stepping stone when I come back to the problem later but now I really must be going to do other things.

I am no longer certain that this problem is solveable but even if it is not solveable I should be able to use this as a starting point for constructing a proof of that fact.

If you are a stickler for the rules this may technically break rule 5 because the number one is technically a multiple of all other digits. This would mean that the number one cannot be used at all however so I chose to interpret rule number 5 as not applying to the digit one.

Methodology:

Choose a completely random digit to type. List all digits that may follow without breaking any rules. Select one at random to use as next digit. If all possible next digits break some rule then start over.

Time taken: About 15 minutes

Notes:

The first idea that came to mind was to select digits non-randomly from lowest to highest and upon entering a fail state simply going back one digit and choosing the next higher possible digit (rather than starting over completely). This idea was discarded after reading rule 10 because rule 10 would likely cause a lower-to-higher trend to result in a lot of fail states at the last one or two digits. Rule 10 encourages even distribution of high and low numbers thus making random selection probably better than non-random selection (I never did actually try the non-random selection method though so that might be incorrect).

I mean that I don't know what "The Truth" is.

The entry for "god" in Mopac's thesaurus is about 200 pages long.

Come to think of it a lot of entries in his thesaurus are abnormally long.

I was actually very patient with him when we first met because I literally thought English was a second language for him because of the way he talks. True story, I really did.

Alas no, turns out he was merely yanking our chains this whole time.

The world doesn't like The Truth, it prefers its idols.

Mopac gets pissy because "you can't tell me what I believe" whenever people understandably misunderstand one of his intentionally convoluted metaphors but here he is straight up telling people what they believe by telling them that they worship idols.

Silly TV Show Thought Experiment

@Paul
We don't need to talk about plausibility, it's just completely ridiculous in every conceivable way, but one thing I thought when I saw this show turned out to be worth contemplation.

This scenario just popped into my head the other day (yes I know I think of weird shit).

Subject A and subject B both have a computerized implant plugged into their brains. When activated the implants wirelessly connect to eachother and all incoming brain signals (the five senses) for subject A are intercepted by their implant (such that these signals are never processed by subject A's brain) and wirelessly sent to the implant in subject B to be fed into and processed by subject B's brain. Incoming brain signals from B's senses to their brain are similarly intercepted and sent to be processed in the brain of subject A. Outgoing brain signals (such as commands to, for example, move an arm) are similarly reversed.

The resulting effect has the appearance of causing the two subjects to "switch bodies" without running into the problem in the OP due to the fact that subject A's brain and all associated dendrite connections are still the processing point for all actions taken by subject A within subject B's body even though from A's perspective they are effectively in control of subject B's body.

I think I explained the concept clearly enough. I am less sure that my explanation for how this relates to the OP is clear but you should be able to figure it out. If I have not been clear please ask any questions you might have.
