The law doesn't go after people nearly as hard for making a mistake, and for good reason. You are right. The guy forgot he committed a crime and then remedied it on his own immediately. He did not wait decades for security enforcement to beef up.

I think I get what you are saying here. Just because something is "not a person" doesn't mean it has no value to society and deserves no legal protections.
It's a flawed argument to say that all non-persons should necessarily have no legal protections from people seeking to destroy it.

No where in the law currently does it require you to risk your life
We have a lot of states with a "duty to retreat" (I think 15 states) meaning you are legally required to try to resolve the situation without harming either party even if it means you may get shot in the back.
The victim is compelled to take a reasonably low amount of risk to his life by fleeing, which shouldn't have to fall on the victims shoulders.

Yes. You can call the claim a lie and explain why its a lie. You cannot call the person a liar. In fact, in debates, you are dealing with claims and reasons, not with other persons. How hard is it to stick to that rule?
Not all wrong statements are lies. Jumping to the conclusion that someone is lying when they make a mistake or have incorrect information can be hurtful and insulting. In an open and respectful forum, we should all give people the benefit of the doubt. Assume innocence before guilt.
