@3RU7AL
While I do like your optimism about anonymous internet people and their behaviour, this is the same internet that brought you Boaty McBoatface and the new Mountain Dew Flavour “Hitler did nothing wrong”.

I2 is a form of live debate with prominent individuals who are not that invested in winning, and who’s followers or compatriots are not also invested in winning, and there is no active competition between participants and voters (such as today’s participants are tomorrow’s voters and vice versa). The competitive debate aspect of this site is a key selling point.

With a limited community, many would be honest, some would not: and it wouldn’t not take long for such unrestricted voting to undermine fair competition - as it did in DDO.

I think the main issue is that you want as many people to vote on debates - whom are verified - as possible to even out opinion and point of view. Even in the real world you can have multiple judges coming up with different decisions and more votes tend to balance that out.

You could have an opt in mode that allows only “verified” voters to vote on your debate, and we could have stricter controls on who is verified or. It compared to regular voters. The only issue with that is that I’m sure everyone would use this mode, meaning that if you’re not “verified” you’re not going to be able to make many votes normally

I’ve  actually been finding it picking up. There’s same number of debates per day started, but there’s far fewer full forfeits now.

PM #1: “Hey, do you have a second to talk about your vote?”

PM #371: “I can’t believe you ignored the argument about widgets.
Me : “I literally dedicated 50% of my RfD to your widgets.”
PM #372: “You just ignored it”
Me: “Seriously, read the RfD”
PM #373: “But in the part about the widgets you brought in external information”
Me: “You mean the part where your opponent disproved it?”
PM: #374: “yeah, where did the opponent say widgets are too large?”
Me: “in the part where he said “the widgets are too large to fit”.
PM: #375: “But you ignored my whole argument about widgets. That’s not Tabula Rasa man.”
Me: “How are you a teacher?”

@3RU7AL
you can spend days working on a debate and then nobody votes on it.

when people do vote on your debate their RFD makes no sense.

when mods review RFD's their opinions are too vague.
These three  things are literally the reason I attempt to vote on every single debate that there is with as comprehensive an RfD as I can. People may not always agree with how I come down, but I do my absolute best to be as dispassionate and fair as I can.

I was far too pissed off in DDO at every other debate being a 0:0 draw

If someone wanted your IP address, it’s as easy as getting you to click a link - as every time you log into any website of any kind  it gives that site access to your address. To those who could use your IP address to so bad things, it takes about 5 minutes effort to do it.

In terms of data breaches - there’s no info of value on this site is your data of birth and your email address and your password.

I’m all for everyone being paranoid about Cyber Security, the fun you can have with Starbucks wifi and off the shelf network tools is amazing; but it’s important to have the right level of paranoia.

If bsh or virt - or anyone where had the ability and intent to use your IP address for nefarious reasons, not having access to it via a moderator panel is not a big hurdle.

Saying that, the value of seeing the IP address is not that great. It’s either going to show that two people are the same person - or it’s going to show that one person is traced to a TOR exit node/random VPN. Neither of which are improved by letting anyone see it.

Note: that wasn’t a real link - merely illustrating that as the process of loading a website requires you giving that site your up address, getting someone’s IP is as trivial as a link on a website.

Did you mean ideal?

I don’t think a test RFD is necessary, we have mods to remove bad votes, and hopefully when enough votes are bad enough, people will have their voting rights taken away (this is already in the CoC)

The main examples of suspicious behaviour patterns, are new sign ups not participating in the debates or forums, logging in, voting then disappearing for long stretches of time, then appearing again with minimal other activity, voting, then disappearing.

There’s no legit voters I’m aware of that would be obviously prevented from voting imo with these.

The main issue is here, is anyone can start up an account today, and immediately post a vote on their own debate, and it’s near impossible to definitively prove that you’re doing it.

In addition, there are at least two accounts has that are almost certainly sock puppets that have posted multiple votes and affected the outcome of at least one debate - a conclusion based on highly suspicious activity profiles, voting patterns, and specific give aways that I don’t want mention at this time.

I don’t think you can really stop anyone hell bent on creating a voting account, but in my view, an individual user needs to have sufficient activity on the forum, debates, or in general in order to vote. The requirements should be set to a high enough level that few people would be willing go to such lengths to pretend to be an active user in order to vote.

I think all the limits virt mentioned are valid as a “any one of 3” case: IE, if you have any one of the three criteria you can vote.

I do also think there is an additional minimum of at least 2 weeks before someone can vote on a debate.

Trump's getting his wall it seems
-->
@Polytheist-Witch
1.) He doesn’t have the constitutional power to declare an emergency when it is not an emergency.

2.) It is congress that raises and appropriates money for programs - declaring a national emergency to deliberately circumvent this process is not within the power.

3.) The courts will decide, or potentially it may not even go that far. Whether or not the courts are the entity that will make the ultimate decision does not change the fact that this is a blatant circumvention of presidential authority, and pretty much demonstrates the retarded hypocrisy of Republicans in general, who shit their pants in rage any time Obama signed an EO.

when the Congress is bought and paid for by the slave labor traders in America colluding with Mexican coyotes, it's a national emergency. Lincoln would approve.

Awesome, so even GP agrees this is a made up National Emergency!

Republicans must not allow president Trump to subvert the constitution of the US for his own benefit and because he is unable to negotiate with Congress

Idea: Changed Opinion voting option
-->
@Barney
While it’s probably okay for informal debates, the main issue I have is that it shouldn’t really be up to debaters to change opinions that may have been held by voters for 5-10-20 years. While it may be okay for rap battles or pop culture stuff that no one has a strong opinion on, more than that gets a bit dicey. IMO.

In the specific context of your sentence, it was used to indicate a possibility that this could be used in order to justify the privatization of those sectors, which you seem to be implying is a good thing, hence giving the appearance that you’re  advocating privatization of the Border Patrol, FDA, IRS, EPA, FAA, Fish and Wildlife Service.

I wouldn’t too much, he’s trolling you.

Its the standard tactic of misrepresent, strawman, and be generally deceptive about what he’s talking about, for the purposes of trying to make you spend all of your time correcting the multiple inaccuracies and misrepresentations in his argument.

If you pay attention, he hasn’t really offered any actual argument against what Socialism really is, he’s simply intentionally misrepresenting it to make you sound like you’re defending it: when in reality, he’s just a knob that cant really defend his beliefs.

Its much better to just launch into a defence of what Democratic Socialism actually means, and actually is.

Hell, about 4 posts before he launched into his nonsensical referencing to social justice and social interventionism, he spent some time actually talking positively about social justice and social interventionism.

Of course, the idea of prayer doesn’t make a lot of sense as you said, If the intercession the prayer is advocating was warranted, one would suppose that god would have done it anyways.

Theres the idea God would answer prayers for strength, etc, but even that seems a bit like God is demanding you beg him to give you willpower, otherwise he will not give you willpower, and you will fail. This has always seemed a bit incoherent to me.

So out of interest what is your position on The KGB fingernail pulling socialist agenda of paid family leave, use it or lose it paid paternity leave (to normalize leave for the purposes of not stigmatizing women), and means subsidized daycare? Paid for by both employer insurance and higher contributions from high earners.

Okay then. Good luck with that!

Perhaps you should call me a prick, or evil again - as that completely invalidates my point that the right wing have consistently misrepresented socialism as communism, or that the majority of their policies are implanted to varying degrees within various existing democratic countries who aren’t under the yoke of oppressive government.

I remember Regans famous speech:

General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate. Mr. Gorbachev: you are a prick and a hate-filled bigot

It's funny to watch Liberals be smug about Socialism and Communism while hating the US for being involved in Russia. Which is exactly what they want. To run the US like the KGB. Hence the Patriot Act.

No wonder you hate America and Americans. Perhaps you should go home.

You poor bigots. Must be awful to walk around so hate filled and stupid.
Yeah, so let’s look at it that shall we.

I’m pointing out that the right wing has consistently misrepresented the entire position of democratic socialism, what it is, what it means, how it works. I’m using real world policy examples and locations where this sort of policy plays out.

If you don’t want to engage in a discussion of a debate, you can quite happily leave and go somewhere else. What you appear to be doing, however, is starting a conversation, then when someone replies with an argument - you just hurl names and insults at them.

Now, that may count as a “good argument”, from where you come from, and the intellectual circules you travel in, but that’s quite frankly stupid.

So please, it’s somewhat funny calling the people trying to have a conversation hate filled bigots, but considering you’ve called me “fucking evil”, “a fucking liar”, “a hate filled bigot”, and more, for having the audacity to not agree with you; it’s probably best not to draw attention to the fact that you seem to bring mostly insults to the conversation, whereas what you should be bringing to the discussion, if you’re not able to answer basic points, is silence.

Why do you think these "woke" billionaires like to influence government? Who do you think is really in control here? It certainly aint the common man.
Yeah, we should stick it to those billionaires by lowering their tax burden, and removing inheritance and estate tax that disproportionately targets them. That will send the desired message that little people like you will not let them wield disproportionate influence over us policy.
