Japan and South Korea are rich and dysfunctional countries. They've had technological and commercial (I wouldn't say the word economic) progress but are socially backward

Japan is seeking to make the young people drink more (health cost) to get revenue -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPAnIVqwwaI

All meanings of these words have dictionary meanings unless the context is explained specifically otherwise.
rich;
dysfunctional;
backward;
socially backward;
progress
and give context to:
regressive;
sexist.

Japan has a high GDP and is a top economy of the world. It is dysfunctional and socially backward because it is still based on outdated tradition (family honour execessively being placed as a high priority in a toxic way and socially backward as they don't tend to think critically and rather go by emotions as in the case of encouraging young people to drink more at the cost of their phyicial health. They also have very bad mental health care system despite all the executive power and ability and MONEY to change it.)

Japan has no law prohibiting racial, ethnic, or religious discrimination, or discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Japan has no national human rights institutions. - https://www.hrw.org/world-report/2020/country-chapters/japan

Child Abuse and Neglect has been found to cause and sometimes if not cause, it exasperates, problems in socializing, and being mentally healthy later in adult life. In Japan, we all know the suicide rates are high and young people, tend to not want to interact often and prefer being indoors or even if they do interact, there's just not enough sex going on to replace the Japanese population properly. Well it is no surprise then that -

It's very clear that Japan made a fast recovery after WW2. But we must not forget that [Japan's postwar growth spurt would not have been possible without Japan's alliance with the United States, since the United States absorbed Japanese exports, tolerated controversial Japanese trade practices, subsidized the Japanese economy, and transferred technology to Japanese firms; thereby magnifying the effectiveness of Japanese trade policy.] While I know this is wikipedia and all, it gives a lot of citations which you can check up on-
