Reminder: Socialism has nothing to do with the title itself, and the points made about how good socialism as a system is, should be considered null.
So the title is:
Capitalism is basically the slavery of todays Society
This would be proven false if:
- Capitalism is not something "of today's society"
- Capitalism is not the closest thing to slavery in modern society
1. "today"
Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations was written in 1776, meaning that actual organized capitalism has existed for over 200 years. Capitalism is always capitalism itself, and if capitalism is intrinsically exploitative, it always were. Therefore, even if Capitalism is proven to be slavery-esque, it would have been slavery-esque in older societies, such as in the 1900s, which means "Capitalism is the slavery 'of today's society'" is not proven.
2. "basically"
Pro has only declared capitalist society to possess some characteristics of slavery, ignoring that actual slavery with actual slaves exists in Africa, possibly in modern society.
Compared to actual slavery, Capitalism:
- is not required to hold people as property.
- is not required to exploit people.
- is not required to have "people" do labor(for example, futuristic or transhuman modes would have operating capital making more capital. In fact we do have some, such as assembly lines for cars and toasters.) Machines without tangible intelligence cannot be considered within slavery.
"basically"
I want to ask Pro, How pear-like does an apple have to be to be "basically" a pear?
at a
basic level
: in fundamental disposition or nature
Slavery requires inherent exploitation of people while capitalism does not. Sure, exploitation can be incorporated (and has been) but that does not make it a "must" for capitalism. At a fundamental level, the two are different, let alone in modern society.
Conclusions:
- Capitalism is not something of modern society.
- Capitalism is not basically slavery because the two are different.
- The topic is proven false, vote CON.
While I agree capitalism is based on an often oppressed working class, effectively comparing it to slavery is a reach.
The latter.
I began using this site only because I am bored in online classes. I just debate for fun, and that is a hobby that will (probably) go on my college application.
I never took debate training. Well maybe I did a year ago, but I treat everything there with spite.
Is your approach to semantics based on methods that have been studied or is it entirely unique to what you have observed works?
Yeah True.
Thanks to you, I have become the contender of whatever this is.
Actual slavery hasn’t gone away.
