Round 1

Every person should be able to be what makes them happy. The same way you would not tell a painter that they have to become an aerospace engineer in order to be successful in life is the same way you would not tell an aerospace engineer the inverse. I am a firm believer in biology and sciences as a whole, but "gender" is not biology, it is a societal construct made for ease of distinction. Sex is the biological term, and a person's biology is separate from their gender. While closely linked, they are not the same thing. I feel that "non-binary" is just another form of self-expression that should not be shrugged off and disregarded to find out what their "real gender" is.

If gender is just a construct, why does it feel necessary to defend it as real? We don't demand deep recognition of favorite colors or fashion choices — yet those are also forms of self-expression. Not to mention you can express however you want, but once you expect others to participate in a belief system you admit isn’t based in biology, it stops being personal and starts being political.

Gender must be defended even though it is a construct because it is one that shapes a society and the norms surrounding it. Politics are also a societal construct; it was not present when people were still nomadic, only becoming popular when cities became more popular. Politics shape the entirety of how a city is ran, and thereby, the society living in it. People become hateful towards each other over politics, people go to war and die over politics, but politics as a whole is the result of a person one day deciding that people should be controlled because they cannot control themselves. We should defend gender as real because it as a construct is just as real as politics (along with many other reasons). Self-expression is the main reason why many revolutions and political shifts have happened, having the ability to publicize issues. A recent example of this would be "This Is America" - by Childish Gambino. It's imagery, lyricism, and coverage of certain topics became centerpiece to many movements when it essentially boils down to a man being unhappy with the way his country has been, and is currently being ran, so he spoke about it in art. This piece came under heavy fire due to the political climate it was published in. Similarly, gender is an equally important manner of self-expression that also comes under heavy fire, though it can be just as revolutionary as others.
