But if you've changed your mind about blanket statements and would like to know my more in depth opinion, I think that some politicians in the Republican party may well care about the public, but the saner ones are not in control and won't speak up to challenge their leadership if they think the president's actions may not be good for the public/America. So they are effectively impotent.
I think their party has been taken control of by an ego-consumed child who isn't even really all that Republican, and they're just going along with it, even though they know how insane it is, because they're afraid of going against their party. With a few notable exceptions like Jeff Flake. Politicians have always been afraid of going against their party, Democrat or Republican, but I personally have never seen it have such dramatic consequences.

Much appreciation for the appreciation, but I don't really feel right accepting it, in my case. As a recusal mod I do much less work and so imo deserve much less credit. bish and Virt are the ones who have really put in the hours here. I only handle sensitive cases. The rest of the time I get to put my feet up; bish and Virt do not.Well, I am deeply grateful for all your efforts. I'm certain it is a lot of effort for little reward but I sense that you are all motivated by more than mere recompense. You've made a safe & friendly space for me to write and research and socialize with the deeply weird, which is a tremendous boon and balm for me. the problem is, for many imo, there's isn't a better choice in 2020. IF (big if) the democrats didn't go full socialist-tard, pander ad-nauseam and actually cared about the general public rather than "special" groups they probably could have converted a bunch of voters. But that's not their game plan. It's control, control, control. None of them actually want to help the U.S. they just want to get elected.
Why'd you vote him in in the first place? If you voted for him, of course. You knew what you were getting. Were you one of those "because Hillary is the Antichrist" people?

So NOAA seems to be blowing up right now. Its own scientists are apparently in an uproar about its public statement defending Trump's claim that Alabama would be hit.
NOAA's chief scientist, Craig McLean, care of The Washington Post:
"The NWS Forecaster(s) corrected any public misunderstanding in an expert and timely way, as they should," McLean said. "There followed, last Friday, an unsigned press release from 'NOAA' that inappropriately and incorrectly contradicted the NWS forecaster. My understanding is that this intervention to contradict the forecaster was not based on science but on external factors including reputation and appearance, or simply put, political."
The head of the NOAA workers union said he'd never been so embarrassed of NOAA. The National Weather Service is still standing by its scientists and says they were right to contradict Trump.
Aaaand now The New York Times is reporting that Trump's man Wilbur Ross threatened to fire NOAA officials if they did not retract their contradiction of the president's claim.

He doesn't have cooties. He is capable of good, and if I was in a room with him I'm sure I'd actually find him charming. He seems to have this ability to make people feel like it's you and him against the world, which may be why people will follow him against their own self-interest and into utter ruination. I actually like him -- just not as president. I think he belongs back on reality television.

It's not defending him to observe that the thread doesn't break the rules. Someone made a call out thread with a suspiciously positive OP for me, too, so if that's mockery I guess I've also been mocked. If you show people you're sensitive to that, they're never gonna stop messing with you.

Y'know, when I came back from hiatus I was really bummed to discover that you had left days before. I took it seriously when you said you'd never be back. You should never argue with religious people because they have magic on their side. When you have magic on your side literally anything you can think of is possible.This is too general to be accurate. Religion alone doesn't keep people from being reasonable or from being reasoned with. If it did, then no one would ever de-convert. Some believers can be extremely dogmatic and may distrust anyone who believes differently. Reasoning with these folks may be a lost cause. However, this is a subset of believers much like anti-theists are a subset of atheists. Let's not pigeonhole believers based on the most extreme examples of theism.In short, don't push away reasonable people by being unreasonable towards them.
