There is only one option.... for science, we must build a GIANT ROCKET and fly into space to find out for ourselves just WHAT BE GOIN ON with this shape o da globe business.KEKEKEKEKEKEKEKEKEKEFNORD
He almost seriously hurt himself doing that. Rocket science is not easy and manned rocket flight is definitely not for amateurs. People can believe whatever they want, but when they start endangering their lives over it I begin to get troubled.

Ah. Does he think otherwise? I don't see how it can be denied that this is what a lot of humans think. Existential despair is one of the major reasons humanity has been reaching out for gods since the development of our prefrontal cortex.
And I would hesitate to say "reality is minus god" because that brushes close to an assertion of knowledge, which I of course avoid like a burning bag of dog poop.

How could you possibly forget task 4,908,018 on your site to-do list?
Btw, is the new private message option in the account tab also referring only to emails?

Oh nice, I'll do that. Thanks.
You may want to change the setting description(s) to make it clear they're email specific.

So do we have to participate in writing it or anything?

@DebateArt.com
If some notification is disabled in the notifications settings but you still get the emails, it's a bug. Can you please elaborate? What kind of emails are you getting?
New private message, new mention in a forum post, etc.
So mentions are only implemented for debate comments and forum posts, for the former, there is a setting called New addressed comment in the notifications settings -> "Debates" tab; for the latter, there is New addressed forum post in the notifications settings -> "Forum" tab. Those settings should allow to disable or enable the notifications. But let me know if they don't work.
That option says, "You will be notified when someone mentions you in a forum post."
It doesn't say anything about emails. I actually thought this setting controls whether we get notifications on DART. I don't want to turn on-site notifications off. I just don't want email clutter.

I hear:
- By the time you're thirsty, you're already dehydrated; thirst isn't a reliable indicator of dehydration.
- You need eight glasses of water a day. (Though this is supposed to include the water in your food.)
- If your urine is dark it means you're dehydrated.
These were things my high school nurse and health teacher told me.
I now hear people saying they're rumors spread by Big Sports Drink. So how much truth do they have to them?

I can't say I've ever heard a song of his I like. I wouldn't say he's talentless, but it's definitely a style of music that's not for me. I'm really not into that whole soft hip hop, rapping in a synthesized voice thing.

The first one is that 'reality minus god' is just 'reality' so the equation becomes 'reality equals hopelessness', which is a little pessimistic for my taste!
A simplification would be "this equation describes what a lot of humans think".

Are you really saying that "Reality minus god equals hopelessness" is "A concise and accurate equation for a ubiquitous human cognitive phenomenon."?Reality is 'minus god', but I don't see things as being 'hopeless' on that account. Things are as hopeless or hopeful as we make them.
Yes. What is your issue exactly.

In all sincerity, I've been reigning my lascivious self in a bit now that I am a mod. I want to be more professional and restrained, as becomes the position. That said, I don't mind loosening up a bit on occasion, and in certain situations. Besides, all that testosterone--Spacetime was clearly flirting with me.
- You were Fun Bish on DDO.
- I've never seen you be fun because I did not know you on DDO like these others.
- This makes me a disadvantaged minority.
- Your own ethics demand that you not discriminate against me as a disadvantaged minority.
- Withholding Fun Bish is discrimination.
- If you withhold Fun Bish you are a BIGOT who HATES MINORITIES.
- Checkmate, mic drop.

... Well okay then. File that away... note to self: do not go off on a developer in Sup's presence. It is isn't about the developer, it is about the hard work he does for the site, constantly updating it. If he sat around doing nothing not appointing moderators and having bad glitches, I would be 100% on the wagonI was thinking the thread title was hyperbole. None of his actual posts in the thread match the intensity of the title. He has a way of "clickbaiting" his titles. I don't like this because if a new member clicks on the site, the clickbait thing is "CORRUPT RATING SYSTEM, MIKE IS CORRUPT TO CORE" he is clearly extra salty
I don't know why I didn't respond to this earlier. That you lost your temper < why you lost your temper.
Yeah I get you. Mike does a lot of hard work which we benefit from daily. The title was just so over the top that taking it seriously wasn't my first instinct.
But if Rash hadn't made this thread we would never have gotten that "oh for God's sake" post from Mike so I maintain it was 100% worth it.
P.S. Backlogging your feelings has a way of blowing up on you later. I'm not sure it's the better option.

It probably should have been, on my part. I don't know where my hesitation came from.Airmax would not automatically be given one. But, I would be happy to step down were he interested. Clearly Mike would need to approve, but I didn't think I needed to specify that--I just took it as obvious.

- I haven’t admitted that was my intention.
- You responding immediately to my initial comment clearly shows that you have no life. You are on this website constantly — because your life is so thoroughly sad. You have nothing and no one. Meanwhile I have guys asking me out every single day ;)
How does it feel to be a sad loser? You’ve lost in life RM. That is why you spend 24 hours a day on a debate site.
This basically means almost everyone here is a loser. We have a huge number of members who post daily.
I go absent for sporadic month long stretches myself. It's not just life. It's some need to distance myself from the tribal thinking that slowly creeps up on me when I spend too long in a debate environment. Does anyone else not like that feeling? When the Us vs Them mentality starts to take control of you?

I was just asking because it looked like someone was planning to be a go-between and convince airmax to accept the job.
Can you explain to me why airmax would just automatically be given a mod seat? And can you just give your seat away to someone else, or does that decision have to go through Mike first?
Created:
Posted in:

@bsh1
I am indeed moderator, though if Airmax or Whiteflame ever wanted the job, I'd happily hand it over to them.
What.
Would we get the same absentee airmax who never enforces any rules and lets anyone get away with anything. Cuz that's alarming. I'm having like mild panic feelz right now.
Or would we get a different airmax on DART because we have an active site dev who will not abandon him to run the place all by himself with limited powers, and this will sort of wash away the coating of bitterness and restore airmax to a bright-eyed active moderator again (I'm assuming he once was one).
I need to know this, this shit is important.

Yes, they get a pass. Only words that fit the hate speech category are banned. So pretty much all profanity. I don't really care if you censor the f-word.
Omg can it be?
Created:

... I should probably have censored those words with asterisks to be safe.
I just don't get why replacing one character with another character somehow makes the word okay, or defused, or something.
Created:

I'm more interested in what profanity the mods will let slide. My preference is: all the profanity. All of it. But for some reason I sense they would be less than completely open to that.
Do these get a pass:
- ass
- bitch
- shit
I want these to get a pass. They're among the milder swear words.
They are all frequently used in contexts that are not about personally insulting someone, I note.

So is this a sort of catch-all bish bashing thread now.

@ResurgetExFavilla
So? Hysterical people used to burn herb women and midwives, that doesn't mean that it's 'dehumanizing' to make fun of someone for being a weird cat lady. I can find more regimes that murdered (and are murdering) people for being Catholic than you can find ones which murdered them for screwing other men, but it's not 'dehumanizing' for people to call me by silly names. Did fucked up things happen to Catholics? Yeah. But with the exceptions of some slaves under the Ottomans and in North Africa, (and some actions of the English in Ireland) people didn't treat us like livestock because we were Catholic. Dehumanizing is a powerful word because it's specific. It's not about telling you who you can stick your dick in or even trying to control you religious expression, its about telling you that 'you aren't human'. It's about ignoring your basic human instincts, like love for your offspring or the right to own anything that you create. Hence the name. If you say that someone is 'dehumanizing' a man by calling him a tranny or telling him to put on a pair of pants instead of a dress, then the word loses a bit of the raw power meant to describe specific, uniquely horrific acts like chattel slavery, large-scale extermination, crushing totalitarianism, or sadistic torture.
I agree. Especially with that last sentence. I don't think this is a word we should risk watering down.

It's times like this I breathe in the fresh air and think about how relieved I am that I'm not in leadership.Oh, to be free once more...Yet you keep slurping up to the mod of whatever site you find yourself, until you are "in" with him.Sure you long to be free.
I really don't understand hunger for power. It's like hungering for a near constant headache. Yeah, be a moderator, who wouldn't want to deal with an unending symphony of:
"You're being too lax!"
"YOU'RE BEING TOO STRICT."
"You have power. That is suspicious. That is f*cking suspicious right there. Why don't I have power? WHAT IS YOUR GAME?"
"Why have you done nothing about those disgusting atrocities I did not report?"
"I just discovered your personal political leanings disagree with mine and will now interpret everything you do as if it's coming from Hitler."
"You're f*cking temp banning me for calling Member X a lying moron? BUT HE IS. I'm telling everyone you're anti-truth."
"I don't like Member Y. Why have you not kicked Member Y out? You're not doing your job."
"I can't tell the difference between explained prohibitions I disagree with and deliberate tyrannical oppression of my personal freedom."
"You are LITERALLY the Lidless Flaming Eye of Sauron. LITERALLY. Watching us from your evil tower, always watching, whispering to your One Ring, pulling your evil f*cking strings from Mordor so you can one day conquer all of Middle Earth and enslave the races of men, elves, dwarves, and hobbits! That's your plan isn't it. ISN'T IT?!!"
For the record I've been the "you're being too lax" one. Also whenever I'm confronted with authority there's a little voice in the back of my head that whispers pretty much everything in #3 (so, normal for an American).
It's also probably just random chance that I'm not guilty of #5. If bish had happened to be super conservative, I would have been uncomfortable just like right-wingers are now, whether I admitted it or not. That's just the truth and it's bullsh*t to deny it, imo. You can't really help it. This is someone who stands against your beliefs and is in power. That is unsettling. It also makes you much more prone to suspicion and conspiratorial thinking.

Galaxy Quest! Such an underrated film, if you ask me.
I know it's terribly cliche, but that moment at the end of A Few Good Men where Tom Cruise finally cracks Jack Nicholson and gets him to angrily confess his guilt on the witness stand -- so satisfying. That general was one of the most hateable characters I've ever seen in film.

Wow. You guys are... very intense about this.
What did you think about the points made in post #24 of this thread?
Fwiw, I do remember that "whoa, finally! a sheriff in town!" feeling I got when Mike first bounced a few members who displayed problem behavior. I didn't want them permabanned or anything, but I felt their behavior largely contributed to the deterioration of one of the DDO forums, and it was really nice to see a mod who seemed like he wasn't going to let that happen.
A re-write does absolutely nothing if the mods are still free to call anything, and I mean anything, a CoC violation.
Anything like...?

I don't think it was created at all. But I think it's a miraculous and mind-boggling little gem that is like no other rock in space we have yet discovered, and it regularly fills me with amazement. Now that is a puzzling statement. You don't think it was created, but you accept it exists. Surely you don't think it just magically appeared all by itself? Even if it is a fragment of something else … it still had to come from somewhere or thing. You think it is a miraculous and mind boggling little gem? Well that is observant. It is unique - so unique "that is like no other rock in space". It feels you with amazement?
secularmerlin appears to have beaten me to my response. What is the conflict between accepting Earth exists and not believing it was intelligently created?
But to answer the question: I think that Earth, like everything in the universe, can ultimately trace its origin back to the Big Bang.
* And my words were "that is like no other rock in space we have yet discovered". I know it may not seem like much, but it's an important distinction to me.
- Are the Earth's purpose and humanity's purpose two different things, or is the purpose of our planet bound to us in some way? This is a good question too. Firstly, if God did create everything, then the answer of purpose for the earth and humanity is the same. It is to glorify God and to enjoy him for ever. From a non-theist's point of view, the two would or may be vastly different. I suspect that the earth's purpose in this latter case would as Hawking might suggest be nothing. Humanity's purpose on the other hand could not be a collective thing, unless it was to survive (although this raises more difficult questions such as why?) so it must be totally subjective to each individual. And their purpose would be to do things in order to live and to die. They might include things along the way - to look after their children etc, to live peaceably with each other, but all of these (without God) would still be directed their own individual purpose in life.
It sounds like you're saying the meaning of life is to worship. Is that what you're saying?

Either have a third party rewrite it, or place the moderation team.
Do you mean replace it? I was hoping for something more within the realm of possibility. And I did ask for a suggestion other than a CoC rewrite.
Suppose a third party does write up a new CoC, but it's basically the same as the one we already have. Which seems likely because all sites have roughly similar rules. Is it worth it to go to the trouble of replacing the current CoC with a new CoC that says basically the same things, just so we can say the acting mods didn't write it?

I do appreciate that I'd probably be singing a different tune here if I had personally been sanctioned by the mods.So if you couldn't be objective and fair, why do you automatically believe the mods would?I left DDO and I'm back at DDO with the same no oversight mod ruling the board by whim. This is not what I signed up for.
Well that comment was my attempt at being objective and fair. I guess it was a flop. 🙁
It would be cool if you could give me some specific examples of their lack of oversight so I know just what exactly they're letting people get away with. I have suspicions about which problem members will be in your answer, but I'd like to be certain. I've already told you elsewhere that the religion forum did seem to be a bit worse when I came back, but I haven't seen anything explicitly reportable. I'm interested to know if you've reported anyone, and what the mod response was, if so.
